I always feel like some concept clicks into place with your videos. Things doing stuff- remind me of reading Marie Kondo’s “life changing magic of tidying up” where she talks about things taking care of you if you take care of them- and even being able to fulfill their purpose when allowed to work, as in to be given away when they are no longer serving you. I just keep thinking about- things doing stuff, and the inherent respect and daily ritual that mindset brings out. And then the Doing- ness being able to be invoked in the ritual world.

Excellent. I'd never heard of Megin before but it sounds like the Egyptian 'heka' or Indian Sakti. I'm not sure if there's any analogous concept in the ancient Irish sources, though I was just thinking about 'the battle of words' that often occurs (before actual battles) whereby the warrior poets or the supernatural beings invoke natural phenomena as if to conjure up their attributes within themselves. An example would be 'I am the wind in the sea, I am the sea wave upon the land, I am the stag of seven combats, etc... '. That's from an old poem about the conquest of Ireland where a warrior sings that before disembarking his ship to take over the island.

Thank you for making this video! The inability for scholars to see what they haven’t been trained to see always irks me but also reminds me that there is so much I will never know or encounter in any way. How can a culture of openness to not knowing and in turn accepting other perspectives be cultivated?

@Nordic Animism Where does Bruno Latour say the stuff about agency? I'm interested in reading up on it.

The rough concept you’re getting at here, especially how you described Ashé, is found within the writings of Maximus the Confessor, who is perhaps the most underrated Christian saint. He uses the term “logoi” as a plural of “logos”. The logos is the overarching identity of a thing, that which makes a coherent whole, while the logoi are the various qualities that contribute to the thing. Everything from rocks, plants, animals, humans, stars (were he alive today, subatomic particles and galactic superclusters) have logoi that shine through them and show us the underlying logos.

Is this what people referred to as the Divine Spark in Hinduism that got adapted into the Christian “Holy Ghost?” I figured it would be equivalent to the unifying force that all these forces named, with modern science just calling it panpsychism.
@AlexStock187
@AlexStock187 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t agree with the characterization of the Christian Holy Ghost somehow being inspired by or borrowing from Hindu ideas (the concept is there present before we have evidence of Jewish-Hindu cross-pollination), but yes, there is definitely overlap between Maximus’ Logos/logoi and ancient Hindu ideas of God being found in everything and everyone and modern scientific panpsychism.

I've got to agree with you on this one, magin is imbued into an object, symbol, rune or even a person by our act of giving it and sustaining meaning into it. Magin as meaning if you like. But this is obviously a simplified view and I suspect that most humans do this only they don't have 'language', as in perseption, to understand what they are doing.

enjoyed the vid. would love to hear more about fetishism. Curious to hear your thoughts on the fetishism of biology or ancestry, such as is the case with many euro descendants and dna testing ect. with many of us beinng desperate for a story of our lineage and turning to that avenue for info, although I agree with you for it being a scam business. Tyson Y mentions the fetishism of biology here and there in his podcast, I dont want to misrepresent what he said, but I think its somewhat along those lines of disconnected people looking in maybe the wrong places for story. You should hit him up about that, would love to hear the fruits from that yarn.

Would love to see the possible video you mentioned of the example of the othering and racism toward animist practice in Sweden. Or elsewhere in euro-descendant culture. We have to understand this phenomenon to stop it and choose a new path forward.

@@NordicAnimism yes, thank you! You bring up some very good questions that we should be asking ourselves. It’s really interesting how many aspects of modern life this touches, and yet we typically are unaware of the connection. I’m gonna sit with that for a while.

On immanence, I particularly recommend the work of the anthropologist Martin Holbraad - Read his article and intro in the antology "Thinking through things" - that is a good place to start. My own thesis obviously ought to be canonical, but I haven't gotten it published properly :-D
