Chess brings people together, I am an American and was traveling through budapest, I sat down to play an old man in the park for a few hours, after the game he gave me a tour of the city, teaching me how to get around on the trolly, took me to his favorite pub, and now we are friends, I go visit him almost every year. That's an amazing story. Chess crosses all kinds of boundaries so well. Usually even the trash talk is fun, although I don't really engage in trash talk. It's too easy to make a simple mistake and screw up. For example, I was playing yesterday on my mobile chess app, and I castled, but the rook didn't move to the other side. Opps, that was my queen and a couple masted moves. So embarrassing. I really do love hearing stories like that.

I love this story. When I lived in Budapest (for about 5 months once and 4 months another time) the people were so nice like this. I had a friend from the States come and visit and stay with me and when I was working, she would travel alone out into the city. She would always meet strangers who would show her around. (:)). My brother is a semi-professional. He told me that a match against a beginner is not necessarily always easy or short because beginners play unconventionally and unpredictably and sometimes make moves that happen to be quite good.

My Brother was decent at chess. He quit asking me to play after I got the three or so move mate on him. It was a total accident for us both. He'd played into it perfectly and I was mildly shocked. It's ok to be really good at chess and not tell your opponent. That would end the game before it even begins, even if your opponent doesn't have a chance. Then you miss talking to each other, making new friends and just being kind to each other. This game was more about learning about each other than it was about chess.
