In Japan, I've seen Shiba Inu sitting outside a shop, untied - so well behaved and trained that it did not move from where it was told to stay, not even standing up, until the owner came back.

Yeah, the western world tries to understand the dog through how other dogs act. It's should be seen more as a loyal wolf that's been domesticated. The Japanese allow the dogs to be their own animal and give them space understanding they prefer to have more personal space generally, but will keep an eye over it's territory and owner like a wolf you befriended while camping in the wild. If you stay there forever it will just chill there close to your camp fire and eat with you, etc. Once it becomes your friend it will stay there. These people think of it as a dog getting distracted, when it's rather a dog with wolf dna doing what it does naturally.

My Shiba Inu is SUPER silent. But she screams only if she is very scared (always over dramatic), heard only twice. She does not like barking, only in a lower voice, only if she thinks that something is weird (a sound or a person). Amazing, smart, and intelligent dogs. I can openly say, the best dog. She is also a hunter, catches cockroaches and insects since being 3 months old. I love her so much!

Calling it a legendary meme is an insulting title given how special the dog is to Japan, and I'm sure thats not how they want the dog to be remembered as. Its an ancient breed. Have some respect. That meme has led to so many Shibas being abandoned in shelters or re-homed cause people want one for shits and giggles without knowing anything about their temperament, then will give them up when they become too much to handle.

Despite its chill attitude towards strangers, the loyalty towards its pack (family) was really something.

I recently saw someone trying to sell puppies whose mother was quite obviously a mix of some kind, not even close to a shiba, and they were saying it was a rare blue shiba exported from Russia 🙄

@@Kaia.Duval. so cream and pinto have to be mixes and are not considered shibas? Do your homework then. Cream is a defect that makes them look all white, not showing the obligational orajiro inside the legs, chest, etc. As white doesnt show white... i Think in England they are still allowed to breed with them which is actually dangerous as they are not able to reproduce every colour, which actually killed some other colours in other japanese breeds already... Pinto is a defect making the fur show spots/intersections of other colours. As the colours should not be "mixed up", with a certain exception for the rarest but in my opinion most beautiful colour, sesame (meaning there should be consistent areas/marks of one colour) they are not accepted by breeding Standards either. Still, they are shibas... cream are considered "lucky puppies" in Japan. But you shouldnt breed with them...

My girl died last year at age 17. My heart so broken. Smashed. My breeder saw how much my heart hurt so she gave me another 1 year old female a few months later to foster, with the possibility of a keeping her. It did not take away the pain and the new dog is nothing like my previous dog. The new dog was perfect, already trained, but it was hard for me at first because I compared her to my previous dog and also because my heart was tired. But after 9 months the new dog has won me over. She is different than my first shiba, but so wonderful, intuative, goofy, smart, affectionate. She's brilliant, empathetic and alert. All the good things about a Shiba, I think you know what I mean. You will never have a dog like the one you lost, but another well bred Shiba will give you joy again when you are ready. If you have a relationship with a breeder maybe you can do similar to what I did and "foster to own".

There were a small number of dogs who he welcomed into his pack, one was a half wolf named Ranger, who was the only one tough enough to "play" as rough as Darwin liked. He bullied most other dogs, even a 100lbs Golden Retriever. He loved tiny dogs, he loved puppies, and he was terrified of fireworks, but afraid of nothing else.

I've had mine for 12 years and she walks off-leash, listens really well, and is great with other dogs. I took her off the hands of a grandmother who found out she was "too much to handle." She grew up with an Akita, who passed away a year or so ago. My parents have a poodle. My sister has a lab mix. And my girlfriend has a bull terrier and had a jack russell. Callie can stay at anyone's house, problem-free and without incident for any period of time - a day, a week, a month. My mom actually BEGS me to go on a trip or have a busy week, so she can dog-sit her. Then, it's hard getting her back, lol. She doesn't chew things up; she doesn't complain; she is very independent...but also very loving. She just likes her space at times...but, hey, SO DO I!!. She is literally the greatest dog you could ever have. Everywhere I take her, she's a hit. People can't stop asking about her. And she is so respectful and loyal that I almost feel bad that she tries that hard to impress me that much. I have only owned one shiba and others have had them and had different experiences. But, with the right amount of effort, attention, and socialization...it'll be the best thing you ever did. She's getting up there in age, but you would think she's still 3 years old. I think she has plenty of years left in her, but I can't begin to think what it would be like without her one day. She's that special.

@@paudeenlee thats what i was told when i got mine. Because of that we didnt really train walking off leash much. Wich was a big mistake. After like 6 months we tried letting him off leash and he does fairly well. Yes he wanders off 50 meters away from us and if something is interesting for him he doesnt listen to call backs. But if i just keep walking away he will full sprint to me because he doesnt want to be left behind. Dont listen to what people say and train off leash walking from day 1 and you should be fine.

Great video of these special puppies. I got my first from Japan town in Los Angeles in 1983. It was like adopting a child. Shachi was a great pet! Later my wife and I showed, red , and black and tan shibas. Had a show kennel for many years. They are a wonderful breed of dog, full of energy, and life. Miss having them . All mine are gone now.

And the screaming thing, yes. I had read about the noise, but you cannot comprehend it until you 1st hear it. My 1st shiba puppy was used to sleeping with me or in a crate next to my bed while potty training. When visiting a boyfriend's parents' house, the puppy woke the whole household with his screaming when we tried to make him sleep in a crate that was not right next to my bed. They are also very cat-like and even sometimes make meowing sounds. They are generally a very clean breed like a husky and only smell if they get wet or dirty outside.

I was a first time Shiba owner but I did my research on the breed Now I have 2 full bread with papers I don’t discourage anyone to get a Shiba but do your research I agree that they have to be on a leash my shibas both at puppy age got off there collar and they were gone Luckily the one Shiba tackled the other I do recommend a hardness a sturdy one they are strong when they want to go after a another dog especially my male Shiba or nice rabbit or squirrel they do shed a lot but they are the best dog breed I’ve ever had thank you for this video

I disagree, this dog requires a responsible owner, regardless of if they are first time or not. I'm a first time dog owner, and my Shiba got her AKC star puppy certification last month. She is well tempered, and well trained for a puppy and I never stop training her. It's very misleading to say they aren't good for first time owners because of this misconception "experienced" owners get them and have no idea how to deal with them simply because they are not responsible owners.
@BexMcInulty4 жыл бұрын
I said this under another comment but I can only partially agree. It's definitely useful to have the experience. But if you have the right kind of personality and temperament for this dog and you really want it and are willing to put in the immense breed specific research you can get away with it as a first time dog owner. If you're not willing or able to do this you won't get away with it even if you had 10 dogs before. It will be a lot more difficult for you if you never had a dog but it's totally doable. I adopted my Shiba from a family who had to re-home him because of complicated circumstances but they were first time dog owners and they honestly did a good job with him. I do want to work with him on certain things, he is a bit anxious and grew up a bit too sheltered but overall I am impressed with what they have done.

@@danimayb I agree people have to start somewhere, which is why I don't believe there is anything such as an entry level dog. I wouldn't get a frenchie in hopes to eventually get a Shiba, they are two completely different animals, not to mention regardless of breed individual dogs have different temperaments. People say I lucked out because my Shiba is not reactive, however the breeder I went with bred her Shibas based on health and temperament, which is why I went with her in the first place. Bad breeding practices and irresponsible owners will always result in a bad time for everyone, however there are always exceptions to the rule.

If anyone wants a shiba, find a reputable breeder that breeds for temperament. You will thank me later. Also, I’ve owned GSDs, worked with malinois, and my shiba is by far the smartest and most agile dog I’ve ever witnessed in my life. When they said this is a big dog in a small dogs body, they’re not kidding. Mine plays with dogs that weigh 4-5 times my shiba, she out maneuvers them and outsmarts them constantly. It’s like watching the Olympics. Shibas also can live to be 20. So if you get one, you’re in it for the long haul.

Indeed, because an friend of me his Shiba an she is very aggressive iff she is laying down, iff you come to close even iff you didn't want to give her attention or didn't realy notice she whas there, she will attack you and she hates children, it's creepy how that cute little doggy becomes a monster in a second. No way I want her in my house. And I truely love dog's 😕
@bbllaakkeeee4 жыл бұрын
Nick Meersschaut they’re all different. Mine hasn’t met a person or an animal it doesn’t like. However she has boundaries, if another dog jumps on me while I’m holding her, she gets very angry. If another dog tries to take her belongings in her home, she gets upset. Other than that, this is why I speak upon temperament. You can get a very aggressive shiba or you can have one that won’t stop licking you, like mine. 😂

@@bbllaakkeeee och yeah I've seen some sweet and loving Shiba's to, it's just that one I can't trust. I kinda blame the owner, he is a bit lazy and he doesn't do real training on her or give her any commands. He just let her be, it's been so far that she even wants to bite him iff she doesn't feel like moving out of the way. She's overly spoiled and gets what she wants and when she wants it.

I've had two Shibas. Back in 1996 I located a breeder in Arizona and. We picked Saki up at our local airport, having her flown to us when she was just 12 weeks old. Three years later we drove 300 miles to Colorado with Saki where we left her over night at the home of a champion stud owner. I've never seen anything as cute as those four baby Shiba pups from Saki's only liter. Of the 3 females and 1 male we decided to keep one of the little female pups naming her Kiren. Having some experience with Shibas by this point, we realized just how important early socialization is with this breed. Before they were even a week old we started the pups on a desensitization program. At least three times a day we'd separate the pups from their mother long enough for them to get a little hungry. Then before bringing mama back in to nurse them, we'd spend about 15 minutes handling each pup, paying special attention to holding their paws and nestling their little noses right up to our face to familiarize them with our touch and smell. The pups quickly learned to associate this handling time with the reward of being reunited with their mother and nursing. At two weeks old we started transitioning the pups to bottle feeding and by their forth week we had them fully weened to a bottle, and we were either physically holding the pups or keeping them right next to us almost 24 hours per day. It was a lot of work but the difference was night and day. Saki, the mama lived to be about 16 years old and even near the end we could never trust her not to run off if she ever got out of the house off a leash. By contrast we were able to train Kiren to always stay within 20 to 30 feet of us when taking her on a walk without a leash, and not to leave the yard, even without it being fenced in. I've never talked to another Shiba owner who could say that.

I definitely do not recommend a shiba for first time dog owners. My family has one, did zero research before getting her (even worse, they bought her from a pet store for a whopping $3,000). She’s difficult to deal with, very stubborn. She loves to run, but can not be off leash or good luck getting her back lol very high energy too. They are beautiful dogs, but please do your research! Go to a reputable breeder, or rescue one! Otherwise you will end up with one with serious temperament issues

A beautiful introductory video to the Shiba Inu, watching you and the puppies it’s easy to travel back mentally thousands of years to see why humans and wolves teamed up. Watching the Shiba climb the fence brought back good memories of my adventurous Husky. Loved the hospital service dog portion. Dogs and humans communicate on a much deeper consciousness level beyond words. Got my Animal Watch shirt, I wear it proudly to drive even more viewers to this great experience as I walk my senior beagle lab mix, who is very much a furry near human hair ball generating companion with some engaging doggy traits still! 😉

I had a Shiba Inu and she is spot on They are independent and stubborn! Ours was a mix but the behavior was that of a shiba. Mugsy was an excellent dog but he would climb up and over the fence in the backyard and escape! He did not scream, though, but he was the smartest dog I have ever seen. He was very protective of my son Best dog I ever owned, but would not recommend if you don't have the time to work with them.

Lol 😂 That’s a funny story! In Japan Shiba-Ken is not screaming type dog. We got many Shiba-Ken it’s a common dog in suburbs. We usually keep them outside in a backyard with a dog house (a little dog house he can enter to sleep or rest) with a bowl of clean water. It’s not meant to be kept inside. It usually enjoys outside, they guard the house looking out property and their dense coat keep them warm even in Japanese winter. We take them for a walk in the morning and at night twice a day and they’re independent dogs meant to be kept outside.
