Frida is very versatile. Jazz, pop, rock, disco, standards, you name it. Her range is amazing. She was on the stage at age 13 but she turned into the performer you know from ABBA. But if you want to do yourself a favor listen to her Swedish album called Djupa andetag. It is a fabulous album.

Frida has been my favorite singer since the 70s. There is no one like her for me, she can convey feelings like nobody else. I agree with those who say Dupa Anditag, after ABBA, is amazing, so mature, so powerful.

Read about ABBA and learn about the workload of Frida on those ABBA songs. She was the groups pro vocalist and front and center performer entertainer. She has a keen keen ear and an enormous range. She also mastered diaphragmatic breathing. When the girls sang those high pitch unison chorus', it was Frida that did the heavy lifting. Agnetha was a pure soprano. Frida mezzo-soprano with huge range. Agnetha's middle voice was higher than Frida's middle voice, so Frida had the longer travel, while Agnetha stayed home. It was Frida's job to use her keen ear to match Agnetha. During those big unison high pitch chorus' Agnetha remained in her neighborhood, a pure soprano. Frida had to leave her neighborhood and over to Agnetha's neighborhood and with Frida's keen ear, she could match Agnetha. Over the decades Bjorn has explained that when Frida reaches Agnetha, she puts a edge on her voice and that is when that metallic sound happens when in high unison. ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows The Real Story of ABBA By Carl Magnus Palm It took Stig Anderson/Polar Music a long time to secure Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The foursome lost Frida in 1971 after their cabaret shows winter of 70-71. In 1972, after a year and a lucrative deal contract, Frida accepted a solo Polar Music contract and agreed to rejoin the group. Once Frida committed, she was all in. Extremely hard worker and a known perfectionist.

Just to put this performance in some context and the overcoming of stress. She'd left home early that morning to drive the 70 miles to Stockholm on the very day Sweden switched to driving on the right hand side of the road. She then had to sing in a preliminary heat of the contest at the open air stage at Skansen around midday before returning for the finals in late afternoon/early evening. She won that. The winner was awarded the prospect of a recording contract. So she was happily thinking about going home before the host surprised her with 'No. You're also going to be on TV later'. She was then whisked across the city to STV studios to appear on this programme, 'Hylands Horna'. This was one of the most watched shows of the time and even more so for this special programme as the population was encouraged to stay indoors and not travel that day as the left-right traffic changeover was eased in. But what is most impressive about this is that it is completely unrehearsed. A longer film of this shows the two pianists looking at a piece of paper Frida had handed to them with the music arrangement. She's not even familiar with the different type of microphone used on TV or if she is allowed to take it off the stand. Early in the song, you will notice that twice she responds to someone signalling for her to lower the microphone a little. So totally unrehearsed, totally live and on her television debut. This is real 'seat of the pants' stuff But, although only 21 years old here, she was already a veteran of hundreds of live performances and her Jazz improvisation skills worked well with the combo behind her. What is also quite evident is that she was far happier singing than being interviewed. Holy Banana's indeed.

This is a very moving performance from the orphan girl, who had to escape Norway after the war with her grandmother, here in the middle of a potentially life transforming experience. Only 21 and already a mother of two and a very mature singer. Still, it's very interesting to see how she developed as a singer after this, which becomes very obvious when looking at a live solo performance from another Swedish tv show from 1981, where she did an amazing rendition of Pat Benetar's 'Fire and Ice'. At that point she had come out of her shy shell and was a full-blow singer and performer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bImwnGmiopmjh8k

In 1971 she left the foursome after their cabaret shows. It took Stig Andersson a year to get her back. Stig wanted her bad, and he gave her a sweet deal if she would come back. Part of the deal was a solo contract, which she signed after her EMI Sweden deal 1967-1972 was fulfilled. Stig viewed her as the full package: looks, body, vocal skills, stage, theater, TV, modeling, etc ... and if the foursome failed she was gonna front the band alone.

This is truly stunning in someone so young. As you rightly point out, Dereck, she is quite shy and uncomfortable talking about her private life here, but is truly at home when she starts singing. Frida had a very difficult, troubled childhood and sought escape in her music. She gravitated to jazz at an early age, leading a dance band when she was still just in her teens. The band leader said he knew even then that she was destined to go far. At some stage it would be wonderful if you would react to her 1996 'comeback' single 'Aven En Blomma' which has a wonderful, classy video which is very befitting for the real life princess she had become: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoS1aXyteJ1nndk

Dereck, you are a star for reacting to this, Frida's first television performance from 1967. As someone already mentioned, her appearance on TV was a surprise for her, after winning a talent competition that same day. So it was completely improvised but she still gave a confident performance of her winning song. So much talent and class. Her high adlibs at the end of the song are phenomenal. Try "To Turn The Stone", a majestic track from Frida's first international solo album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5impKeOiKytbpY. This video is actually the edited single version. The album version is 5:25 long. The track was in fact recorded first by Donna Summer for a 1981 album but that Donna Summer album was shelved at the time and remained unreleased until 1996, 15(!) years later.

I love this performance. She went on to lead her own and quite popular jazz/popular standards band. She was a performance artist which explains why she was the one who was most positive when it came to ABBA touring. Agnetha was a recording artist so she was well known success, and she sang more popular style. Her comfort zone in ABBA was in the studio and she could also be at home. What were the chances that they would become the perfect duo?

the mentioned song two years later was an entry for the swedish preselection for Eurovision1969, like ABBA did in 1973 and 1974.... her real commercial success only came after Benny produced her song "Min egen stad" in 1970 oder 71... Up to then she had been very much into Jazz and not such much Pop.. So Benny being a Rocker and she being a Jazz singer was musically unlike match, but Benny compositions turned Frida to the best singer she could possibly be. Listen to "Gonna Sing You My Lovesong" from ABBA's Waterloo album in 1974. Great ballad. Frida and Benny became parents very very very early. Frida gave birth to her first born in 1963 at the age of 17 and to her daughter in early 1967, age 21. Benny became a father at the age of 16 for the first time and at the age of 18 for the second time. They never had a child together, but Benny became a father once more in 1982 with his current wife Mona.

Thanks for this, Dereck!! It was a nice suprise to see this video and it's lovely of you to be so responsive to your subscribers' suggestions!! Frida has a more surprising vocal and tonal range than many singers...and allows the song to do the talking. No showing off. Agnetha's voice is distinctive and crystal clear, though her solo stuff perhaps doesn't surprise the way Frida's does? Benny and Bjorn called Frida's voice an 'instrument', while Agnetha they said was the great 'interpreter of songs'. I get what they mean, and I don't think Frida sounds the same from one ABBA record to another, but Agnetha can do amazing things too. Gotta love those girls. Try 'Can't Shake Loose' by Agnetha...I think her biggest US solo hit? xxx

Dereck already reacted to Agnetha's "Can't Shake Loose": kzbin.info/www/bejne/eF6Zn6x8qbV6qrc. Indeed her biggest (and only) US solo hit. I've already come to terms with the fact that Dereck belongs to the Frida Fan club group, so many Agnetha fans are asking for a reaction to her .... and still Frida is the last Frida because he is biased. That's why he doesn't like to react to Agnetha, either in ABBA or in his solo career, because he couldn't even praise her enough, he always evaluates Agnetha very economically, Frida is still in superlatives and that's unfair ... I'm not alone in thinking that. ..

@@BestForeverMusic I think Dereck was more into Agnetha before...I'm sure I've heard him say, once, he was an 'Anna fan', so maybe he is learning to appreciate them both and making it seem he's biased towards Frida at the moment? As we all know, all of ABBA are fantastic, in different ways!

Frida delt more in the jazz genre for a while and would be the front singer for a few jazz, cabaret bands before meeting Benny Anderson. Frida credits Benny for introducing her to modern rock and pop styles. Her reluctance to talk about her children probably has to do more with her wrestling with wanting to pursue a career and knowing she was probably going to have to leave them behind in order to do so. She was a young wife and mother and it was a big step to think beyond a few contests. Her career at that time, would mean alot of travelling around Sweden, usually by bus. As her career took off, she left her children with her husband, who she would end up divorcing by the late 60s.

Love this performance and its interesting to observe how many tones and keys Frida hits. Although she never had any really big hits as a solo artist until she the early 70's when she began working with Benny, for me this perfomance shows how she could sing at so many different ranges. During the ABBA years she had to sing a lot higher to reach up to Agnethas' soprano ranges, while Agnetha in turn with sing lower to reach the depths of Frida's mezzo-saprano ranges. Because they were able to do that its sometimes hard to tell which woman is singing what. A lot just associate Frida's 'ABBA Voice' with the depths of Fernando, Super Trouper or Knowing Me Knowing You but believe me, its both girls together in unison much more on the big ABBA hits than most imagine.

No question Frida has talent and chops. Her delivery on this song is so smooth and languid...like honey in warm milk. In all fairness could you take a look at something similar by Agnetha? She appeared on a Swedish TV when she was 25 and performed 2 songs she had co-written herself. What I love about this video is how it shows how absolutely fresh faced and charming she was before the ABBA years taught her to be defensive and on guard. Here you can see her both bold and bashful....the lip bite and wrinkled nose are so adorable....who can help falling in love with her on the spot? At times her voice is slightly off key but her performance somehow exceed the sum of its parts. Please watch and you will be truly touched by the sunshine and warmth that radiate from her:). Dereck, you really need to introduce yourself to bossa nova, the genre that is giving you the cruise/Lido deck vibes. Check out Girl from Ipanema or Sergio Mendes for some chart-topping examples of this. And thanks for sharing this video, it's a revelation.

Hey, hey. I got something for you man. Make a comment on " I got something " from Frida's album *something is going on * a gem of a song, so much advance for its time. It's phenomenal, her voice, the musical arrangement is superb. Ty!

In my opinion Frida is a way better singer than Agnatha. Her range and ability to be versatile in her interpretations are so much more interesting than Agnetha´s! Not that Agnetha isn´t a grat singer - but Frida is so much more interesting! Try to react to some of her later solo music - "Även en Blomma" from her swedish solo album Djupa Andetag (1996) or "Shine" from her solo album "Shine" from 1984! So different in style and sound - but both great examples of Fridas fab voice!

I agree. I guess Shine, the song and the whole album, will be another eye, or better ear opener, for Dereck ;)

Oh please!! Be fair, Agnetha has dozens of voices that show her versatility.....compare her sound from these various songs: Name of the Game, The Day Before You Came, Slipping Through My Fingers, Head Over Heels, Doktorn, Mr Persuasion, The Winner Takes It All, Lay All Your Love on Me, Hasta Manana, etc.....each song she shows a completely different delivery. Vibrato on demand, sonic purity, whispered delivery....the girl could sing. Where I will give Frida props is with her classical training. She shows a greater knowledge of technical training. Agnetha’s talent is more organic. She copied the voices she heard over the years and added her own spin to them. In the end, I will put up “Sometimes When I’m Dreaming” against anything Frida has ever recorded. That song is Agnetha’s penultimate tour de force and should put any and all arguments to rest about her talent

Lawd. Always on queue to diminish the versatile blonde from the group. Agnetha was versatile which is why a music critic stated she was able to mimic many styles. Listen to any of her swedish albums from the 70's or her renditions of songs from Jesus Christ Superstar (her swedish version of I Don't Know How to Love Him is one of the best on record) or the Doris Day version of Thank-You for the Music. Frida admitted Ags was the soprano of the group who had a much "higher" voice to her mezzo-soprano which is why Ags solo work on ABBA were always in a higher key. No need to diminish one to elevate the other. You can easily make the case for Frida without diminishing Agnetha. Not to mention all female singers can utilize their head voice on high notes, there aren't that many who can belt out a high B using chest/mixed voice like Ags does in Hole in Your Soul on record and live.

Oh no! Please! No more Agnetha vs Frida negativity (that's very '2013'). *Both* are good. We can even be grown-up (like most of the commenters in these posts), by saying good points about Frida separately, and good points about Frida separately. And even liking one or the other more. There's nothing wrong with that. But, *please*... no more puerile negativite tongue-poking-out comments. Be respectful to both of these wonderful women who've *both* contributed to millions of peoples happiness through their craft.

You should do some of Agnetha's earlier Swedish tracks. Many are quite lovely. Her "Vart Ska Min Karlek Fora" from Jesus Chris Superstar is divine. And the Swedish version of "Disillusion" which she wrote the music for, titled "Mina Ogen" is superior to the ABBA version vocally (it was recorded 2 years after the ABBA version for her 1975 solo album).
