One musical critic I watched also had an amazing argument regarding the song "I think I'm gonna like it". In the OG it was a huge group ensemble with all the house staff and it seemed clearly focused on Annie loving the attention she finally gets. I do agree with a lot of your points, but as a high school English teacher, not knowing how to read or being at least functionally illiterate is definitely possible at Annie's age in modern times. As high school teachers, we have a lot of students who have just been pushed through the system, and are years behind their peers. Like, high school freshmen who read at a 2nd grade level, even though they've spent their entire lives in the public school system. It's really quite sad, honestly. So I definitely believe it, especially since Annie lives in the foster system, and those kids are often forgotten.
@AmyoftheFlowerField2 жыл бұрын
I agree. People like to think that the schools will catch this, but I've worked with third graders who didn't even recognize their alphabet. Annie being unable to read, or at least struggling with it, isn't entirely implausible, especially considering that, according to studies in 2014, funnily enough, about 25% of adopted children displayed learning differences, including dyslexia. Kids like her so easily fall through the cracks and are written off as lazy, stupid, or "hopeless cases". Her struggling/being unable to read wasn't unbelievable to me.

Yeah, when I was 10 I couldn't read any novels, i would only get away with reading the general story on the back of the book and it was convincing. I could only read picture books. I had dropped out of middle school so when I got back in high school I had no idea how to catch up in english and failed many assignments but also barely got into AP English classes. I'm doing a *very* minor quick nitpick in that DNA matching realistically wouldn't automatically locate someone's parents. Even using line of reasoning if Hollywood wanted to do a modernized version of Annie then they should have used an actual orphan from states that won’t allow gay couples to adopt them, and other adoption centers that there aren’t any adoption happening at all during that film because that actress that Just Stop mentions clearly has parental figures in life, and orphans are supposed to be people with no parental figures in their lives at all.

Red heads used to get discriminated against in the adoption market back in the day, and now it’s black kids who famously don’t get adopted (even though the problems with the adoption of black children obviously existed back then, but I digress) so it actually does make sense in a modern setting. But was the traditional musical theater vs modern “hip” character jab necessary? You know the part where they basically have this Annie do her homework an performance art. I don't mind that they put it in a modern setting, I like the girl they casted as Annie. I also agree that the songs should not have either been cut or changed just to make it modern. Some things just aren't meant to be touched and the songs from the Annie stage play is one of them.

It would have worked just fine if they committed to actually making a musical rather than taking a musical and trying to “make it cool”. Wallace the young actor who played Annie is incredibly gifted and would have been wonderful in the role if given half the chance. And don’t get me started on how much they auto tuned the voices. I’m sure they all sang perfectly fine, and didn’t need it. At some point auto tune just removed all the character and expression from a voice, and those are things that are needed in musical theater.

I was a bit salty that the song NYC was replaced with The City's Yours, since it could've been easily modernized. Also, as the orphan who got to open for Never Fully Dressed, I def think the Sia version did the song dirty. Im a woc and when I saw the commercials for this movie it gave me bad vibes. There’s an issue I find with remakes where a character trait being swapped is the whole reason for the movie existing, but it doesn’t MEAN or CHANGE anything in the world. The only reason the “girls” ghostbusters existed was to make them girls. Them being girls doesn’t mean anything in the context of the story, it affects the main plot as much as changing a hat. This movies advertising gave me the same vibes, of only existing to change Annie’s appearence, but not the deeper implications of what that would mean, and if it doesn’t affect anything, then why do it at all?

Not every movie with black people has to be a movie abt black trauma or racism or whatever, movies with black people can just be movies with black people (and on a more different note the story itself is not very realistic so I’m not sure if like a scene abt 7 yr old Annie facing micro aggressions from her caretaker would fit the tone)

What I found shitty about this movie was 3 things: 1. The orphan girls barely had any screentime, especially the one who said "no one wants to adopt a teenager". I'm still wondering if they managed to get adopted at the end of the film. 2. Fucking Ms. Hannigan should have gotten her comeuppance instead of a cliche redemption twist. 3. I'm still wondering if Annie ever learned about her parents and what happened to them. After all she went through, she deserves to at least know ANY possibilities. I love the originally Annie film as well as the 1999 version. At least those answered questions.

This newest version is actually the second remake. The first movie is a bit changed from the stage production, while the second is more faithful. Both are great adaptions with great actors. People do disagree a lot about which one they prefer actually. This latest one cannot compare in any way. It’s clearly based on the first movie rather than the original stage play which makes it weak out of the gate. Then it fails the understand the themes, and also in having entertaining villains which those first two defenetly did.

So I was 10 when this movie came out, and I remember really liking the movie for the sole purpose that Annie was black and looked like me (my Dad also bore a very superficial resemblance to Jamie Foxx in having hair cut close to his head and a goatee). But as an adult now I have no interest in rewatching the movie again because I remember enough of it to know that it was boring. I also came to the realization that it is incredibly scummy to make a character black just for the sake of making them black (rather than out of a real desire to be more inclusive/representative or tell the stories of people of color) because it preys on black/poc children who will idolize the movie just because it had somebody that looks like them as the protagonist-which was especially true at the time this movie was made, where POC characters were usually only seen as side characters who often served as comic relief rather than being their own person.
@katt12062 жыл бұрын
It seems like the only reason they looked to make Annie black was because will smith had the idea to cast his daughter, and even when that changed they just kinda went with it? It’s so funny how the remake tries to poke fun at the original as cheesy and dumb, only to defang it. As you brought up, in the remake once the fake parents have Annie, they simply put her back in foster care. In the original, it’s heavily implied that Rooster and Lily’s plan was always to kill Annie as soon as possible so they could escape with their money. When Annie tears up the check, Rooster is fully intent on killing her, Lily isn’t bothered at all and Miss Hannigan, realising how serious the situation is, fights to stop her brother before he knocks her out and leaves her unconscious on the train tracks. It’s an extremely dark scene.

I grew up with the original on video, only having known about the comic and radio show thanks to 'A Christmas Story'. I absolutely LOVE the way John Huston did it, lightning in a bottle:) EVERYTHING clicks! The chemistry of the actors, how perfectly they fit their roles, the songs, the background music, the look, and the way the story is told. During all of the songs the characters interact REALLY well, everything is completely real, and it's all SO heartfelt and does a great job of pulling you in from start to finish while having a layer of ANGER. It's as if yeah, everyone breaks into song and dance all the time but man, do they hate their lives;) I love how they use the songs. Namely Annie singing 'Tomorrow' for FDR when he says they would cheer up the people who lost hope in their country caring for them, swapping out 'NYC' for 'Let's Go to the Movies', and of COURSE 'We Got Annie'--Punjab dancing:) This is the only time Sandy is actually a CHARACTER too! And just HAVING Punjab and The Asp, it's obvious the movie is based on the COMIC. I love that the songs they made up go perfectly with the rest, how the characters find out about plot points, and that they changed the end to the 4th of July to take advantage of fireworks for that incredible ending! And more than anything, Aileen is EXACTLY how I imagine comic strip Annie! This one...KINDA SORTA almost gets it HALFWAY but not even that much. The songs are slightly catchy in their own ways and Grace is great, but Annie has nothing streetwise about her whatsoever and I sure don't buy her as someone who can get herself out of scrapes or defend others. Much like the Annie from the 1999 version...while the one from the recent live show who's literally girl Kenan Thompson lived up to Aileen;) The fact that Grace is so well done here is totally wasted because Aileen isn't playing her!

They could have made Annie’s parents have her not in a hospital and left on the orphanage’z doorstep. Not having children in hospitals is seeming a trend nowadays (for stupid reasons, really, go to a hospital, because childbirth kills mother’s more than you think), so maybe they were very religious or her mom was a teen and maybe wanted to not get in trouble with her parents. Or she could have been on her own. I know it’s a kids movie, but having more mature aspects wouldn’t hurt the movie; some kids just don’t get to have their parents, because they have their own issues. It’s why I was sad about the bill that passed about “babies unalive”. I know many people in countries where it’s illegal end up having dumpster babies or child murder even (and that’s a little common in America). Honestly, I just wish we had better protection to children in foster care and for mother’s who maybe aren’t ready for children; nobody should be forced to do something with their body that they don’t want. Sorry for getting political, it’s just part of what I wanted to say.

Stuff like this reboot makes me roll my eyes whenever they say a race or gender swap of a character is “the most important thing ever”. It is the flavor of the month and will be forgotten by the time the next thing touting to be the “paragon of diversity” drops. It also shows these people have no faith in making their own original adaptations they need to co-op things other people made and slap their own race or gender on it and act like they did all the hard work that made the original intellectual property so beloved by people. They don’t want to put in the actual hard work time and effort and making their own character that happens to be a certain color or sexuality or gender and make them likable and give them a story that people want to engage with. That’s how we end up with half big shows like high Guardian spice or magical girl friendship squad with only surface level things of gender sexuality or race to try and draw viewers in.

Our school was so excited for the 2014 Annie including me. The schools staff team made shirts and posters of the movie for all the classes. Our Principal set up a plan to the movies so our class can see it, we all wore our Annie shirts , and I remember how much we all loved the movie, it really was an amazing memory. I still love the movie to this day, beautifuly made.

She was also a redhead and well, most couples didn't want a redheaded child. It's also what set her apart from the other orphans. Or at least that's my interpretation of the source material. Also I'm glad I never saw this film.

No shade to you, but black children are often times ignored or not seeked out in the Foster system. I think the remake film could've gone in dept with that and showcased that part
@MissCaraMint2 жыл бұрын
@@mysteriousdestiny6672 well yeah I actually though it was a clever parallel to make the modern Annie the modern child who would be shafted by the foster system by making her black. And then they did absolutely nothing with it. It bothered me. Like this could have been something.

I loved the original movie when I was a kid and as a black girl I really attached myself to the reboot. It wasn’t the best but I still enjoyed it especially seeing someone like me as a character that I was obsessed with.

Why do you need to see yourself on screen. I love Mulan but I don’t ever want her to be rewritten as a Mexican American woman. She is Chinese, Annie is Irish American leave her that way.

@@MrSophire this can go the same way as ariel why do YOU a white person need to see YOURSELF on screen after years of being shown 24/7
@Zvwry Жыл бұрын
@@MrSophirebecause as a child your development changes who you are. As a child when you only see a certain image being promoted as beautiful then you go into the world of middle and Highschool where ur development your body and your mind start to be noticed by other people it can damage your self esteem. I’m black I relate more to people that look like m. I’m from New York, I relate more to people that live in the city. It’s nice to be able to see yourself in characters makes you feel personally validated in you existence which every kid deserves.

i don’t know, as much as this movie probably wasn’t the best technically, it was always my favourite annie movie when i was little because it was literally the first time i saw someone looking like me in a movie. it holds such a special place in my heart, i mean i was obsessed with the original movie too but i couldn’t relate to it just as much, and i didn’t really like how aged it felt to me. me and my dad would just watch the 2014 movie on repeat and listen to the soundtrack constantly, it was really refreshing to see people who looked like our relationship and i only recently realised that was why i liked it so much.

I won't lie, I've never seen the og Annie. I've only seen the 2014 version and I love it. I was 12 when it came out and I was obsessed with it. I still listen to the music all the time. It's an unpopular opinion I know but I think it's great!

I watched the 2014 version and the 80s version back to back and you can feel like love and commitment oozing off of the 80s version. 2014 just seems soulless. Like, it's a small detail, but the 2014 version barely has any ear candy (which make the instrumental more interesting). The 80s version has harp riffs, foley, etc. The 2014 soundtrack sounds like something I would make on fl studio as a 12 year old. I also like how it gets a little dark at the end with Miss Hannagan having a (sort of) change of heart after Rooster hits her and she realises how dangerous he really is. There's a real sense of threat in the 80s version but 2014's is so saturated. There are some interesting but half-baked ideas; how kids are neglected by the foster and education system. Focus on Warbucks donating to a school charity to help disadvantaged kids or something. But instead it's so underdeveloped. Discuss race. They made the raceswap for a reason- it was a conscious choice to cast two black main characters. I'm not saying it's a bad thing or that the whole movie should have been about race, but they missed a real opportunity to have some commentary. That being said, I'm sort of glad they didn't do race commentary because it would have been abysmal and just as half-baked and everything else in the movie. Also, I will never EVER get over the fact Miss Hannagan in the 2014 version HOLDS AUDITIONS TO PULL OFF THIS SCAM. LIKEWHAT??? ??????

Gah, my first least role was Rooster. I miss that. The first movie is an instant classic, and Annie 2014 was just an insult, and this vid did such a good job showing it

This movie is actually my only exposure to Annie as a property. It definitely was....a movie. I watched it when I was like 11 and even a week after, you'd be hard pressed to find me remembering anything in that movie besides Jamie Fox and the recognizable songs everyone knows. It was just okay, nothing special. I can't speak on it as a reboot, but as a stand alone movie, imo it's a middle of the road experience.
