@@zachary8055 it’s probably due to rafe not having any self worth , him not having friends and his mom’s ex boyfriend calling him a freak even in front of his mom and his brother being imaginary and dead and the middle school my brother is a big fat liar really do prove this cause rafe never ever in his books mentions how he goes to art school and legit gets good grades the only one that does tell us that is Georgie and that really is sad

This movie really gets under my nerves. I liked the books a lot, but then they turned it into Kirby Buckets meets Radio Rebel for some reason. The books aren’t about rebelling authority? The reason why Rafe is breaking all of the rules isn’t because he’s standing up to the school, it’s because he’s trying to make the most of what he’s frustrated with in his life, even when he’s the reason behind some of those problems. There’s a reason why the entire school didn’t band together with him. This movie feels like it’s what the books were specifically trying not to do.

Thank you I swear the only real reason why this movie didn’t get the diary of a wimpy kid treatment was because of the actual realistic ending of the books and because of that Hollywood was worried that kids woudnt watch a movie with an ending that crushes their wish fulfillment to the dust

this movie absolutely gutted me. as a mentally ill kid and complete outcast in middle school, I was made to read this book in a side class with 2 other kids that struggled in english language arts. I think we were in there because we were all dyslexic, but whatever. I had no friends, I was getting in trouble for drawing in class, and I was dealing with a lot of other personal issues that made connecting with that book really easy for me in a way that I couldn't with other popular novels for middle school age kids. I don't know how to accurately convey the earth-shattering amount of disappointment I felt at this movie. they turned my favorite book from when I was younger into a shitty version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off with non of the fun.

The whole point of MWYOML was about learning the consequences of your actions while still being creative. The movie completely goes against this and completely ruins everything about the series the original two books had much better plots and had really good character moments in the Movie Rafe is just an asshole to everyone and he has no reason to do any of this unlike the book.

It kind of feels like they realized the Diary of the Wimpy Kid movies were popular, so they wanted to make something akin to those, ignoring that MSWYOML and Diary of a Wimpy kid have virtually nothing in common beyond a few very superficial things. Say what you want about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, at least they felt like they were made by people who actually read the books.

i found so much comfort in Rafe for some reason yet this movie punched me in the guts. book rafe made me really sad for him, because of his low self esteem and just him being really selfless. that’s why i get defensive when people compare him and Greg. Greg was FULL of himself while Rafe tried his best, yet he never got to the point where he saw the good in himself, yet he was really kind. I could make a video on more of this comment, but I’m not the best at talking.
@sketchingingreen
@sketchingingreen 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I totally agree. I found some comfort in Rafe as well. Greg is very much full of himself and would look at the rules and say he was the exception to them, because he was so great. While Rafe (from my memory) knew the rules applied to him but just wanted to have fun and be creative at the expense of getting in a ton of trouble. Another thing, in the beginning of the book, Rafe sets up this scene of what he'd like his life to look like (with a drawing) but then immediately goes to "yeah. I wasn't that cool actually." While Greg would never do that. Greg started off in his books say he was an amazing person destined to be famous.

The reason I adored this book so much as a kid was because I did a very similar thing to Rafe in sixth grade where I lashed out and broke rules because I felt helpless in a suffocating family situation. Despite that, the absolute most relatable thing to me about the book was that it presented someone whose mom was financially poor and hard-working while having a controlling and even abusive father-figure. I'd never seen anything related to kids' media dealing with those specific issues and it felt for once like I was seen. I felt really comforted knowing that Rafe had the same problems as me. And the fact that the movie glossed away what made that so special when I was a kid just disgusts me.

Growing up as someone who struggles mentally and with social situations, middle school was actually awful for me. I had no friends throughout elementary school, got a couple fake ones during middle school, and got bullied a whole ton. I struggled a lot in my classes, too, mainly due to anxiety. So when I was given the book, I immediately connected with Rafe and the overall themes and more depressing moments hit me personally. Never knew it got a movie adaptation, and just hearing how they changed the plot for it pissed me off immensely. At least the animated parts are cool.

I loved how I actually FELT for the characters in the books. Its hard to feel heartbroken for a few words on a page, but moments like his behavior at school ruining one of the rare happy moments where he can enjoy time with his mom really hurt. I have an idea for how they could have improved this: In the film, there’s a famous student who broke all the rules at his school (near the one Rafe goes to) and went down in history as a legend. This could serve as inspiration for operation R.A.F.E however it should still keep Rafe’s “normal is boring” philosophy from the book. The rest of the film goes down the same but Dwight’s totalitarian rule is lessened. You could even have Rafe imagining it as a prison camp rather than have it be the reality like the movie does to show how he sees authority. Eventually Rafe learns that Dwight was that famous student. Except after Dwight broke the rules and was obviously expelled, his dislike of authority grew and he eventually started lashing out by breaking other rules, namely the law. This got worse until Dwight got sent to Juvenile hall and saw just how much he threw his life away. Dwight then fought tooth and nail to regain people’s trust and get a job as a principal, almost trying to make it up to the system he fought against. The reason for his seemingly extreme rules is because he doesn’t want the students to throw their lives away like he almost did. Rafe then learns that whilst you shouldn’t blindly trust authority, certain rules are there for a reason and operation R.A.F.E isn’t a healthy way of expressing himself.

Of all the middle school doodle books, my least favorite was Big Nate. I don’t have a valid reason to dislike it, it just didn’t hit with 7 year old me. Second place would have to be Diary of a Wimpy kid. Greg was a terrible kid, but I just found it funny. That’s what that series was: funny, not deep, or anything else. Middle school was the best tho: Rafe was a likable kid and his backstory was enough for 7 year old me to raise my fist in solidarity.

Wow, I remember our teacher in 5th grade reading the first book to us in preparation for when we go to middle school. I disliked Rafe at first because I initially just viewed him as a jerk, but now I really regret not paying enough attention or even rereading it again to realize how sad his whole situation actually is.

Funny, I just reread this book about a week ago. I think that if they were to make a live action movie in the future, it should be a lot more like a character study of Rafe's mental health and how he goes from being normal to reckless to more considerate (or as I would usually say; Lawful Neutral to Chaotic Neutral to Chaotic Good) and along with most of the points you brought up.

About James Patterson appearing in the film, James Patterson has a certain reputation as an author. He primarily uses ghost writers to write all his books and drags on series way longer than they need to be (I.e. Maximum Ride) and often throws in stupid twists that make no sense to keep kids engaged. I believe there was a quote from he said once referring to his writing as a “factory”, but IDK. Simply put, James Patterson kind of doesn’t care about the books under his name, so I doubt he cared much about the movie’s adaptation choices.

i’d like to see a film with the premise of overthrowing authority done with a neurodivergent kid. one that’s not oppressed because they’re rebellious, but because they’re framed as being something they’re not and are ostracized by their peers and the authority because of it. that would be so much better than “creative kid mad! grrrrr!” like it would give some substance to the plot and make it clear that yes, authority is often incorrect, but they aren’t incorrect because they’re uncool. they’re incorrect because their moral values are skewed and they don’t actually take the time to understand the people they’re supposed to be watching over. like imagine this kind of trope done with the school counselor as a villain rather than the principal. the principal would be willingly ignorent but the counselor would be the one who is ultimately the villain as they aren’t really helping the students and are instead making them look like bad kids. they aren’t handling bullying or they’re ostracizing kids with special needs. there are so many different ways to show that sometimes authority can be corrupt and you have every right to stand up to them. this just isn’t how you do that realistically.

Relate to your experiences with the book. I loved it so much I ended up translating the whole thing as a final assignment, I loved the idea of a movie adaptation because I legit wanted more people to see this but then the trailer came out and I just... I picked up on like half of your complaints immediately and later ended up just pirating it just to make sure my first impressions rang true. Rafe doesn't deserve this...

While I haven't seen neither the movie or read the books, just from hearing Just Stop's description of the book and story in it I'd love to see the book series turned into an animated series, utilizing the books messy childish but creative style to make a show that would glue children to their TV screens from how relatable it is.

When I first saw this movie, I didn’t even realize that this was a movie adaptation of the book. The book, while I only read it once, was huge to me. I found it during a sleepover once and stayed up all night to finish reading it and it had an impact on me, being an artistic outcast with divorced parents as well. This movie is just... agh, the only good thing is the hand drawn animation.

It seems like one of those movies where it should have done something like what the Lego Movie did. I LOVED TORMENTING TEACHERS in Middle School. Made so many cry. A few quit after having me. IRONICALLY, I went after the "hip" and "cool" teachers, which is what most Middle Schools are plagued with, the fresh out of college, life's great and sunshine and rainbows everywhere. THEN THERE'S ME. The dark ball lightning to not ruin your day, but whole life and expectations of it. I was that good. SO... yeah loved school. I liked teachers that created that CLEAR boundary of; "I'm a teaching unit, you're a learning unit, and never the twain shall meet." In other words, strict teachers were the best. We got along the best as well. I would become their favorite student. Since they had tenure, meant I could play them and use them as buffs, and dispose of the young pool of teachers for fun with little repercussions.

Especially that plot summary for the book, wowee A+ for that. you actually made me appreciate the book series a whole lot more. While the movie is bad, it sorta holds a special place in my heart in that it came out on my birthday and it was part of a book series that I actually discovered when I was in middle school. Not sure if that seems shallow but it's still a decent movie to me. Also THANK YOU for at least saying the animated segments were good.
