The first Hoodwinked ended up becoming a cult classic because it had absolutely AMAZING writing, characters, jokes, and twists, while ALSO perfectly being animated so poorly that the bad animation ended up BECOMING part of the charm. When you pair "Its so bad its good" with "Its fantastic!" you get something oddly special and also impossible to organically replicate.

My parents actually went to college with Cory Edwards and writer Tony Leech and has remained in contact with Cory since. I went with my father to see the sequel in theaters since my family had loved the first one, but he dreaded seeing it as Cory told him that nearly any elements of the original script were barely in the final production. And yes, we all thought it was terrible. Cory Edwards has since gone on to work on the internet cartoon Krogzilla, which has a similar set of wit in its dialogue to Hoodwinked.

Also... Wolf, the wild card? The professional investigative journalist, who clearly has a lot of experience and resources in the kind of work he's supposed to be doing, who takes his job seriously... is made the wild card? Literally any of the other three would have made more sense as the "wild card". Kirk: The idiot who "knows the least about anything of anyone in this room", prone to causing antics and chaos due to having no idea what he's doing (he has to read a book to realize how to swing an axe, for Fairy Godmother's sake). The possibilities for "wild card" hijinks from him are endless. Granny: The thrill junkie, "I'd rather live life... to the EXTREME!" Easily could be the type to take the riskier option or go overkill on something because it would be more fun, regardless of whether it's actually the best option for the mission. Red: A relative newbie, not nearly as experienced in the world as Granny or Wolf, but shown to have a determined and independent spirit, quite willing to take action for herself if she feels the need... the type quite likely to go off the rails if given an idea. And this is all assuming you even need a "wild card" type. You don't necessarily have to have one.

Hoodwinked was a clever movie. When I was a kid, I was a bit put off by the animation. But the comedy and the story structure got me so hooked (pun unintended) that I just went along with it. So it was sad to see that such a movie ended up having a poor sequel. It had the potential of being the next big franchise as long as they kept that comedy and story structure. Those, to me, were the reasons that story worked well. It was truly subversive in its own unique way.

@crippledcrusader13212 жыл бұрын
What makes the first movie stand out is how you don’t get the full picture until you’ve seen all angles of the movie’s events. And I love how they show why each thing happened, all the way down to why the wolf scared Red in the forest, it’s because the squirrel caught his tail in the camera. It’s not revealed as to why until later in the movie and it works that way. We’re given the idea that the wolf is just the usual bad wolf, but then when he tells his recollection of events, it’s more clear as to why that scene played out that way. It’s brilliant storytelling that should be appreciated more. Hell, they went so far as to include the smallest of connections in the movie. Like when Red is on the mine cart, when there’s the part with a huge drop, for a quick moment you see another mine cart on a different track with someone riding inside it, turns out it was the wolf. Because during his telling of the story, when he’s riding on the mine cart, you see Red’s pass by quickly. Damn this movie is much better than I thought.

The Weinstein Company around that same time (2006) also distributed another animated film that tried to be Shrek named Doogal and oh boy what a disaster that was, the history of how that film got made is more interesting than the film itself, originally it was a film from France & the UK loosely based on the animated series titled “The Magic Roundabout” in February of 2005, when the film was being brought over to the states, they hired Butch Hartman and at first, Butch wanted the film to be close with the original version of the film and also wanted to added in live action sequences of the film’s story being told to a grandchild similar to that of “The Princess Bride” but that idea fell through due to it being “too expensive” and the Weinsteins decided to redub the entire movie with pop culture references and fart jokes that wasn’t in the original version of the film at all and the movie was also already in English to begin with since there was already an English dub of it with well known British actors (Bill Nighy, Tom Baker, etc) and it was also a case of executive meddling

As a Bri'ish person myself, when I found out that one of the movies that I enjoyed in my childhood (as it was very child-oriented) got an entire re-cast and rewrite to fit American audiences better, I was pretty appalled. They ruined the entire plot and filled it with idiotic jokes and references that didn't fit the characters at all; and naming it 'Doogal' puts the focus on one singular character rather than the original focus on the entire cast - and how these characters work together. It feels like the original version of those twitter artists that take anime characters and make them obese and black and say they 'fixed' it.
@NinaEinstein20063 жыл бұрын
That is so true, I’ve actually grew up with the “Doogal” version but looking back on it years later It’s one of those animated movies that I’ve watched from my childhood that doesn’t hold up that well in my opinion and i also hate when a beloved anime, etc gets taken away by someone else to butcher the source material and make it into a mockery

Didn’t the Weinstein Company also ruin Balto II? That movie had a development with a white wolf that made no sense (deciding a vision of a wolf was real and actually Balto’s ghost mom), and I read later it was because the producers didn’t know or understand what had happened in the first movie. Incidents like those and the butchering of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (into Warriors of the Wind) are why Harvey Weinstein was sent a katana with the message, “No cuts,” when Miramax wanted to edit Princess Mononoke.

Honestly the sad thing is, these movies two main ideas are brilliant on paper. Red and the Wolf being forced to work together to solve a mystery. GREAT IDEA! The two would naturally have tension based on their antagonistic relationship in the first movie and them realizing that they don't have any logical reason to dislike each other could lead to a solid lesson of the dangers of judging other based on a misunderstanding. Then, the idea that Hansel and Gretal are secretly working WITH the witch is really clever too! Whenever Hansel and Gretal is subverted, it's always "the witch was good, the kids were evil" So the idea of working with the witch is almost a subversion of a subversion! They had two pillars for a really solid sequel, it was just exacuted badly.

I don't know why, but I've always kept looking back at Hoodwinked Too! as a trainwreck. It's so bad, yet I couldn't help but pay attention to it. Sure, it's a drastic step down from the original, but it's oddly charming in its awfulness and ineptitude.

I remember being a kid and seeing bits and pieces of the trailers for the second movie and for some reason I had thought the movie was going to be about Red being upset and depressed over the industrialization of the city moving into the forest and the movie was going to be a kind of progress vs nature kind of film. Now I see my kid brain was just trying to think of a more interesting plot than the final film

I still hold Hoodwinked in my heart as a childhood favorite along with Quest for Camelot and Shrek, etc. Even today, it is lowkey my meme material. I still remember how bored and disappointed I was in the sequel. I think the only part I was interested in was seeing Boingo again.

*What's the point of "appealing to a younger audience" when the audience got OLDER????* I never understood that. Your original audience would be older & new fans would have to watch the more mature previous movie.

When I saw this when it came out, the running gag with Japeth actually made me laugh, because he was my favorite character in the first movie. But the final gag, where he's about to be injured again and then starts singing opera, was painfully unfunny. I thought it'd have been way funnier if, instead of singing opera, he ended by talking in his regular voice before walking away.

The movie at least resulted in the, "Do I look like some sort of clown to you?" meme, so there's that.

I remember we were going to see this movie as a family when I was young, but my brother got in trouble and had to stay home, so only me and my mom saw it. Don't understand why I had to be punished by see this thing where he didn't.

There was a lot of promotion for the first Hoodwinked. Not for the second one. I recall only one or two commercials for the second one. I knew it would be a shitty sequel.

This is the kind of movie that I could watch anytime. Doesn't matter how often I've seen it. If it's on tv I'm sitting down and enjoying it all over again.

For my final project I painted a rabbit wearing a rabbit mask thing (hard to explain unless you see it) and well the mask looked evil so it often reminded people of this rabbit and the one from monty python.

Fun Fact, my family loved the original hoodwinked so much that we still often say 'Dina-me-tay: must be Italian" every time we look at or buy candles. We also collectively hated the sequel.

I still remember my initial reaction to seeing the trailer for Hoodwinked Too on TV as a kid: “There are a lot of red flags, here. Number 1 being how long it’s been.”

This is the cycle of independent creations. They start of as a Huge Success until the studios want more control over how the sequel should be made and it ends up running the project.

I had the original hoodwinked DVD. And I liked listening to the directors talking over their movie and how how it was made and stuff, it was a feature that came with the DVD. But yeah. Originally hoodwinked started out in one of their apartments. Which is kinda wholesome ngl. But they were so proud of their movie. Even going to too see it in movies just to gage the audiences reaction. It was kinda sad how it got botched with their 2nd movie.

Yknow I was thinking about this film the other day because I distinctly remember there being a Burger King toy tie-in. I wanna say it was a year or two before the film actually released in theaters. If that isn't a sign of production issues then idk what is.

I remember absolutely LOVING Hoodwinked Too when I was a kid and never getting tired of watching it. I think since I was a very visual child, I cared little about the writing and more about what pleased me in the scenes, like Red and the fights (always loved action lol). Even though the first movie had lots of action, my attention was always on Red. She was my fave, so having a movie that goes especially around her was the peak of my satisfaction. So it still has a special place in my heart, as I know it was such a great piece of my childhood. Only now I can see how the second movie was messed up in some aspects, and how the first one was way more charming and original. But as I said, the only thing I cared about was Red kicking some butts >:)
