Hello hello, here's my second eurorack module øchd or ochd. It's pronounced "oct" as in octave or octuplet and as if by magic there's eight outputs on this module, an octuplet of analogue LFOs if you will. I often find I need more modulation, simple sources that will keep things moving and stop things getting repetitive. That’s why ochd was brought to life, to keep patches organically drifting and moving… and as it’s modular, we wanted an intuitive easy to use module with plenty of patchable tricks up it’s sleeves too!
ochd is a 4HP Eurorack module with eight analogue triangle LFOs. The outputs go from fast on the top output to slow on the bottom output. The default ranges are deliberate NOT synced. These are free running LFOs that were tuned by ear to be musical useful for a range of fast to slow modulations in a patch. Organic animation, drifting and musical phasing is the intention of the module. The rate control controls the rate of all LFOs globally and takes this into lower audio rates right down to 25 minute cycles on the lowest output. This can be extended even slower with CV, with the CV input and attenuverter on board and we can also track and hold the outputs with a negative CV, interrupting and holding modulation values with external gates of CVs. Another trick to take this from simple triangle shapes is to patch a spare output into the CV input and wave shape with feedback. Exponential curves, odd squares, stepped waveforms and more are available with some adjustment of the attenuverter and using different outputs to voltage control itself.
While patching a prototype at DivKid HQ Richard Devine said this was "the most organic little modulator ever" - lovely stuff!
This module is made in collaboration with Instruo and I'm very proud to be part of their amazing line up of modules. www.instruomod...

Just wanted to thank you for this awesome module. I'm sure it was a blast seeing your ideas and concepts come to life. My very own ochd arrived yesterday and I've been patching it up since, even as I write this. Thanks also, for terrific interviews with other modular musicians and for everything you do within our cool, nerdy community. Like others have said: Ace.

Hey, man! It’s about a year later and I wanted to tell you that øchd remains one of my favorite modules. It has an almost permanent connection to WORNG Vector Space, providing a large array of slow, subtle modulations. I prefer it over Batumi for simplicity and immediacy. Super nice design and implementation. Thanks, for all of that! Hope life is good. ✌️

that's a great pairing with the Vector Space, giving lots of permutations to add into the mix. Feeding one of those outs back to the ochd CV input would be nice to try - I need to do that now.

It would be nice to see this module used to control the VCA of several voices in a generative patch. It could just bring in and out different drones while also providing motion to their timber. I could see myself using this to eliminate some of the extra LFO modules I have as a more centralized hub for modulation. I deff am going to pick this one up when I have the cash for it and when Perfect Circuit gets them in stock.

Soooo would this benefit from the stackable patch cables? Or that’s the point of it? It’s wildly modulating as though you’ve stacked two LFOs that have different clocks? Really cool if it’s maintaining the varied states while still sort of keeping its SYNCHRONICITY preserved, as it seems to be! THANK YOU! hey. Just got the module. Was looking forward to it for a long time. I wonder if mine is faulty though! Or maybe there's something about LFOs that I just am not understanding. When self-patching, say the third slowest lfo, into the CV in and set the attenuator into the positive side, shouldn't that make the LFOs above the self-patched one, go even faster than if no CV is input at all?? My module just kind of stalls when doing this. When I send a gate into the input I do seem to get sped-up activity on the LFOs. Does self-patching only work when the attenuator is set into the negative?? Thanks to whoever responds
@DivKid
@DivKid Жыл бұрын
Hello, so each LFO is bipolar meaning it goes positive and negative in behaviour. An attenuverter (this CV input or any on other modules) is just positive gain from centre. Which means turning up the attenuverter positive you are increasing the level of the that LFO into the CV input which is still going positive and negative. If you inverter the pot/control then when the LFO going into the CV in is positive it has a negative affect and when it's negative it has a positive affect. Inverting the behaviour. But not making it just positive or just negative. I.e. not just faster or just slower. When feedback patching a little goes a long way, you barely need to turn that CV attenuverter to get some affect. A negative voltage (as shown in the video) can stall the module, a specific and useful design trick. So a gate signal can be inverted to be a negative voltage and under external gate control you can stall the module. Working as a track and hold, which is a nice bonus to play with. So if you had an LFO in it's negative portion on the third output and you turn the attenuverter up (letting the signal through not inverted, so still negative) it will stall the module with the negative voltage. I think the misunderstanding is in how attenuverters behave regarding a bipolar (positive and negative) signals rather than any misunderstanding of LFOs themselves. Let me know if that helps, if not let's work it out. All the best and enjoy ochd!

Yeah a filter that works with CV inputs rather than audio ones could smooth this to be more sine like. The Instruo tanh[3] would shape it into sines then more clipped square like things. You could use a comparator to derive a square. Distortions that work with CV, or wave folders etc.

Dewd, how the hell is that little thing so damn much fun? Got mine tonight. It came with the wrong little instruction card (tona), but it's awesome. I read last night folks are triggering their Cloud Terrarium with it. My CT is on the way from Reverb. There was mention that the bipolar outputs need to be tamed to unipolar for Cloud Terrarium. And I'm wondering what the extra headers on the back are for too. At the moment it's "triggering" clouds for me, keeping me company while I do my Linux hacking (um work). ;-) You know you and loopop are brand names now? I mean you were even before you had products with your name on them. I gotta get some Patreon going for you two soon. And that other mad scientist Omri.
@DivKid
@DivKid 3 жыл бұрын
thanks, glad to hear you're having much fun with it. Those cards aren't instruction cards so it's not "wrong". They're little promo collector cards that Instruo put into their modules. Like any collector card type thing (I presume) there's some rare shiny cards and the cards are just randomly put through the boxes the modules go out in. The Cloud Terrarium takes bipolar modulation so you don't need unipolar at all. There's also attenuators on the CV inputs so you can "tame" modulation directly on the module itself. Thanks RE future Patreon support, there's a great community we have going through it on Discord.

@@DivKid To clarify on my question on voltages BTW. I read it on wigglers that OCHD needed it's outputs tamed. And if you read it on the internet it must be true right... ROFLMAO
@DivKid
@DivKid 3 жыл бұрын
"and if you read it on the internet it must be true" haha! Well most modulation is way too wide of a voltage swing for most sources. It's very rare I find myself wanting the full range of anything as attenuation is hugely important in a modular system. OCHD follows a standard for VCOs/LFOs and has a range of -5V to +5V this is going to be too wide for most things. But if we made it smaller it might not be right for others. So we stuck to standards allowing the user to attenuate voltages (as they should with anything) to suit their modules. Speaking of the E350 that has no attenuation on it's inputs (which is fine as many don't so you need attenuator modules). It also doesn't sound great modulating at any sort of speed through the thousands of wavetable sounds it offers. So slower modulation and a lower range of modulation is far more musical and interesting. I highly recommend lower the voltage of any modulation into it. The newer E352 HAS attenuators so you can lower those external CV modulations to work more musically and interestingly.

Smooth unsynced modulation is absolutely just as much at home with stable traditionally "musical" systems as it is more experimental and chaotic. Random would be too. I'd strongly encourage the use of both (whether it's with my modules or not, I'm more interested in people doing it with whatever they have). Anyway that's a bit of a side thought, onto your comment ... Really funny you mention my full name, not that I mind, but what's the point? Does it matter what anyone else is using? Has? How they got there? I won't go on too much but really don't worry about anyone else. Really cool! But you're gonna confuse some Danes and Norwegians with your pronunciation of ø, haha. Unfortunately, I don't have room for it ATM, but if there was an Intellijel 1U version with half the outputs, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

it's not an EQ but a filter bank (similar to an EQ really). That's the Frap Tools Fumana, there's some videos about that on my channel too. Thanks!

what about pairing this with the Doepfer A-152 Voltage Addressed T&H/Switch? does it makes sense somehow? Maybe a patch feeding all those rotating lfos per note? Any switch would do kind of a good job I guess...

This little module packs in a lot for 4hp. Nice how it moves your whole patch around but at different rates. Nothing else out there like it.(although I do like the look of ST Modular’s new Wave V2) Loved my Ochd till it broke in only 6 months. The third LFO down just stoped working correctly, outputs erratic cv and cuts out. Now waiting (and waiting…) for Instruo to respond to my emails because patchwerks won’t warranty it even though it’s been less than a year. Very disappointing.

Hello, this absolutely isn't the experience you should be having or that I'd want you to have with this. Of course a very small percentage of modules can go wrong or break for people (any company) and luckily we've had an extremely low rate of issues. I'll make sure you get this sorted out of course. What did Patchwerks say specifically? Can you give me a way to get in touch with you outside KZbin comments and we'll get this sorted.

@@DivKid thanks for your reply. For me it hasn’t been a good experience at all with module retailers or manufactures during the build of this new case. Over a third of the modules I’ve purchased have been defective. And the return process has be prohibitive at best. This wasn’t my experience when I built my first case many years ago. At this moment I have 3 warranty cases going at the same time, this has been a constant with one module or another for over a year now. Often very trusted manufactures with the extremely high price points. I am a member of your patreon, maybe we could continue this there, or I will DM you my contact info. Even though the module is under a year old Patchwerks says they can’t help me other than contacting Instruo on my behalf. Which I’ve asked them to do as he hasn’t responded to any of my emails. So I’m just waiting I guess, more waiting.

This would be so nice if it was tap tempo...or since its 8 analogue LFOs, if it had a reset input.

Hmm good point, a reset would be really nice, perhaps even critical for some applications. We're gonna need a compact octal VCA or at least manual attenuators to pair with this also. But that can be handled externally. Resetting the LFOs can't be.

I was looking for a quad lfo and something random, as the only lfo I have is that one on Yarns. Then I bump into this. Analog, drifting, not four but 8 lfos, cv input, reasonable price. It was a no-brainer. I literally just finished the video, checked Signal Sounds, it was in stock so I ordered one instantly. You really saved me some money, so now I can spend more on other modules too :D Thank you, can't wait to try it! :)

Help! Just got mine. No manual. Circuit board is not obviously marked. White sticker? I'm not just assuming the -12 stripe goes down. Please let me know.

Hi Warren, apologies I didn't see this right away. The thick white stripe indicates the red stripe down -12V on the module. Thanks for checking and hope you're enjoying the module. It's also reverse power protected.

Hi Johnny, stock is going out from Instruo and the distributor regularly and as fast as possible. Patchwerks, Perfect Circuit, Control Voltage and Nightlife Electronics in Canada have all had them and probably have orders in to re stock. Best to let the stores you use know you're wanting one and look at pre-order lists if you can.
