Just ordered, this solves a couple problems I had, first I have 3 Befaco StMix's scattered thru out my system, this will tie them all together for final output. Second I wanted to direct record my modular, so I plan to take one of the phones out to a Zoom H4 Essential, then bring its line out back to the in's to be able to play back over monitors. Brilliant !!!
@DivKid5 ай бұрын
If you can play back audio and record (but not monitor the inputs recording) through the H4 at the same time this will work. If not you'll create a feedback loop. Where the output feeds the H4, but the H4 output comes back to the Output Bus which sends that sound back to the headphones and so on. On those devices you can often choose what you're monitoring while playing back or recording. But I'd check first.

Love this combo of stereo strips + output bus as a modular mixer. I feel like it’s missing some way to get a master bus fx loop though. The 6th channel is already perfect as the return, it would be cool if the top jacks on output bus could be configured via jumper or something to be the sum of the first 5 channels instead of a duplicated main output.
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
Yeah there's no insert system for the mix and no send system for the channels. Neither were designed for that. But for saturation, EQ, voltage controlled level and pan all brought together it's really nice. I think a pair of stereo strips and a smaller performance mixer of some kind into Output Bus has been one of the most used for me so far.
@aernan10 ай бұрын
loving the jame at the end with the reverb.
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
there's no reverb there actually, it's a feedback loop. I talk about it in the video. I'm taking the modular level outs from the Output Bus back into a Stereo Strip module (for EQ and level control) then sending that into a delay (the Erica Synths Black Delay 2) that goes back into the Output Bus. That then comes back out of the Output Bus ... and so the feedback loop exists. Playing with the mutes on the Stereo Strip and EQ leads to all sorts of different results, definitely gets more reverb and drone like as it builds. Thanks! :)

@@DivKid No worries, I'm sure everything will work out fine. ;) Pretty neat mixing environment you and Befaco created there. I'm mixing outside the case, well submixing inside the modular, but then everything goes into a mixer with four aux sends which makes integrating my Elektrons and outboard fx much easier. The mute switches on your modules are awesome, though and they also seem to be a reasonable size, nice and playable, really well thought out. Not sure if I wanted to mix entirely in the modular, although playing with feedback, sidechaining different voices and creative filtering is much easier and you can do much more on the fly, so I'll probably get a Stereo Strip next. Kinda long text not saying much, lol....just wanted to say your modules are great and I always watch the videos even if I'm not considering buying anything. It must be a ton of work to get those ready for shipping... Btw, did you also work on the Hexmix and Hexpander?

Appreciate the long text, it's nice to hear from people interested and supporting what I'm doing. Thank you so much. I didn't work on the Hexmix with Befaco that was entirely them. At that point I'd had really simple Mutes prototypes made elsewhere, basically a socket wired to a switch to a socket. Totally passive and while alright nothing sophisticated. When the Hexmix came, I just asked Befaco to take the mutes on that module and copy that circuit across for what I wanted. They were into the idea and brought Mutes to life.

I would think stereo strips, eq's, panners, ability to send each channel would be minimum. How would you go about building that ?
@DivKid9 ай бұрын
'stereo strips' ... see my module the Stereo Strip! :) Though this isn't built for expander style rear connections, we kept it open and patchable so you could use anything. That was important in the design, to let people use anything they have from any brand and to bring those together. What do you mean by "how would go about building that?" do you mean with existing modules? Or as a circuit design?
@pau.vilella10 ай бұрын
Super nice one! What would you add to the modular mixer setup in the end of the video to be able to use 2x sends/returns controlling levels? Vostok Ceres perhaps acting as an automatable per channel send line
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
I use the Stereo Strips as a send FX router, though if that's across multiple channels of audio you'd need a mixer and it's gets to be a lot of modules fast. (this recent video shows some nice FX things with the Stereo Strip - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYezZmekdsuSqNEsi=IlDHUszGYH8YSQdc) I'd say a mixer with sends on it is the best place to start. Dope module mate. Question. Can we use the modular output to send it somewhere in the case and then return it on its own inputs and take that processed mix from the unbalanced outs?
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
Hello, thanks. No you can't, you'll create a feedback loop. Well you can if you want the feedback loop. The last patch in this video does that, modular out back through a stereo strip and delay then back to an input and recording out of the 1/4" outs. But it's not a separate unity mixer to the output stage.
@marcob7108Ай бұрын
Hi Ben, a quick question, i'm not sure about: is it possible to use like a send/return fx? Thanks for your work!
@DivKidАй бұрын
Hello, good question and unfortunately not. There's no send and return function. You have the ability to input line level, which will bring that level up to Eurorack and add that to the mix. But the mix out always remains a mix of all 6 stereo inputs. If you output (say through the headphones) to a pedal and then back into the line level input and come out of the main outputs you'll have a feedback loop, as the line level will output back through the headphones too and create the loop. Feedback loops are great (when intentional), but not what you're after here. If you want a send/return module the DPW Pedal IO is very simple and it's clever dual gain staging have sounded great, but there's other nice options. I'd use something like that then the Output Bus as a means of mixing several things in the system and outputting that as a final stage.

Is it possible to use this to connect a TR-909 to a eurorack system?
@DivKid2 ай бұрын
Yes, though it's going to then be present at the Output Bus mix stage, if it's just an input you want (to then further process the 909 and not just add it to the Eurorack mix) then there's simpler options.
@steeletoeboots2 ай бұрын
@DivKid OK, I'm still new to modular and figuring out the routing. Basically I want to run the 909 thru the modular system and use the eurorack effects and distortion. I also just found out that the WMD performance mixer (which I have) can run line level signals? Very confusing since when I began my modular adventure, I had no idea the signals were different than line level. I turn to you as the expert who can lead me down the correct path. Thanks for all your vids and vital info!
@DivKid2 ай бұрын
Yeah there's a lot of learning to do, even when we feel experience with other formats and synthesis/sound in general modular is still a bit of a slap in the face sometimes. Good fun though and the learning is a bit I really enjoy. I believe the WMD performance mixer does have enough gain to boost up line level signals. But what you ideally want is a specific input module, so you can input the 909 up to modular levels and then integrate that in the system from the start of the chain. That way you can then run it through anything and then add it to the mix at the end of the chain as if it was any other modular source.
@steeletoeboots2 ай бұрын
Hi Ben, I'm also thinking the Erica Synths Pico Input might work. I'll have to get 4 of them for the 909. Also, I will be getting Erica's Plasma Distortion Drive in the near future. Hello, I take it you're referring the final patch which is the 6 Stereo Strips and Output Bus. Absolutely an external mixer is way cheaper than any modular mixing solution. I wasn't trying to push 6 Stereo Strips as essential, I think I said you can "build a dream modular mixer" out of anything in the video. The Stereo Strips were just something I wanted to try. So where I think this is really exciting is having, a channel strip or two, FX returns, a performance mixer etc and summing all that together to build a mix out of things some people will already have. If you don't want to stay in the box, going external is a more economical option with larger control surfaces etc. What they don't offer is CV control. With the Stereo Strip you have a stereo VCA and panning circuit under CV, both of which can be really handy and creative. So yeah, I agree an external mixer is a great thing to use with modular if you don't want any CV control and have space to use both together.

@@DivKid Yeah the CV control is a big plus I guess

not for everyone or everything though, so if you're willing to cart external gear around an external mixer works well. It might be a situation where something like a couple Stereo Strips do the CV stuff but they output to an external mixer.

Could this work as a 1U version?
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
it's twice the width of what you'd fit in 1U (on it's side) so it would be around 52 HP to just spread it all out. Which is huge. Bits of it could, but to do all that this does ended up so long as I tried to lay out rough mock ups it hasn't gone anywhere as a 1U idea yet.

hard sync! the use of line-in drum machine plus the soft clipping of a drum machine with hot outputs seems like it could add for some really nice distortion for bass drums or a synth like the 303.
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
for pushing more distortion there's the Rings bit of the video, but check out the Stereo Strip video as it's the same input and soft clip limit circuit. This should play at 7:11 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/anTLe2uDbrWSf68si=Ydv4A8lUh2_NoCRL&t=431 that's more bass synth 303 style riff with the distortion.

I love your channel , I purchased the sum module and it is amazing ! if you add a clock in midi out 3.5mm it will be even better
@DivKid4 ай бұрын
thank you, I'm glad you think so. I don't see how MIDI and clocks fit with this design, there's other good modules for handling those things.

are you trying to get me to add more inputs and get rid of my Rosie :(

I am simply presenting an design that solves problems for me and allows me to do nice things. Nothing against your Rosie.

So I could sell my Befaco Out and stop daisy-chaining my other mixers freeing up mixer channels.
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
Exactly that. Get a nice output stage and be able to output multiple other mixers into it. Use the LED meters and your ears for the gain staging, big red knob to adjust, other mixer master outs adjusted if needs be. Winner winner chicken (or alternative) dinner.

@@DivKid This means I now need a stereo strip too so I can put the main mix through that and Duck the beats that are fed into Output Bus! I was previously thinking of getting the Shackmat Gemini's Path for Ducking and the KonstantLab Baxandall EQ.
@DivKid10 ай бұрын
I haven't tried either of the mentioned modules. Should be good though. Any stereo VCA can be your side chain thing, it's just needing to mix everything prior to it and mixing it back after with the kick.
