That tendering operation is very common here in France in the smaller Mediterranean ports such as Cannes and Villefranche sur Mer. It's also used in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and they end up shuttling back and forth most of the day.

When we went to Alaska, Sitka was entirely a tender port but we tendered right into downtown. We went on a biking excursion with Holland America and our tour group was literally on the last tender to the ship and we were late. They had that tender boat back onboard and were hauling the anchor up before we even made it back to our room. That is the only time I have ever been one of the last people back on board.

I had the same itinerary on Ovation last August. Sitka was actually my favorite port because it was the least commercial of the three and I love to immerse in the culture of the ports. Granted we did take a shore excursion, which probably made the difference. We visited a salmon hatchery and saw the salmon running and spawning and learned about their lifecycle. Next was the Sitka National Historical Park which was part history and part nature. It had a totem park on the trails and more in the museum. We saw lots of bald eagles and their nests. One trail was closed due to bear activity. We also went to a local restaurant for a beer and salmon tasting. The salmon was both sushi-style and cooked and the local beer was flowing. I think they had 4 different brews and we were able to try three 10 oz glasses of choice and then they came around to see if you wanted more so I ended up trying all four. Anyway, if you get a chance to go back, you might try a shore excursion.

Jay another great video, Hi to Jay's Mum, Maybe the reason for the tender boats is the port can only have one cruise ship docked at one time. Noticed some comments referring to them as Tinder boats, guys that's a totally DIFFERENT boat😉also Jay you called the propulsion at the back of the ship issopods they are called azipods They were developed in Finland jointly by the shipbuilding company Masa-Yards and the ABB Group, which produces them. They are a pretty amazing system, along with the Bow thrusters a ship can turn in its own Physical footprint. Keep the great content coming.👍

@NovejSpeed32 жыл бұрын
Just a little technical correction the Isopods are the "propellors at the back" and your animation showed can be turned to help steer the stern (aft). There are thrusters in the bow (front) of the ship (think giant fans on the side) which help move that end. This was great. I agree definitely do an excursion in Alaska and great idea saying to go with the locals.

I saw video of someone showing Mariner of the Seas damage due to another ship, not a cruise ship, hitting it. I had that same "the ship left me behind" feeling when I got off while our ship turned around and went back through the Panama canal. On our cruise to Alaska, my cousin was napping while we went ashore and missed the announcement about the ship repositioning. From the Wrangell Sentinel, published 5/18/22: The cruise ship Radiance of the Seas struck a Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal mooring dolphin on May 9 as it was preparing to dock, limiting the facility to one berth instead of two until repairs are completed in a few weeks, terminal manager Chris McGraw said. There was no apparent damage to the 961-foot ship and no reported injuries in the mishap. A dolphin is a collection of steel pilings driven into the ocean floor and used for mooring a ship at a dock. The Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment is investigating the accident, McGraw said. He has hired Turnagain Marine Construction of Juneau t...
