This is such a fantastic tour of the Singer 301 sewing machine. I loved every minute of it. Last week I found my dream machine (this one!) at a thrift shop for $20 in the lovely warm beige color. I had no clue the light switches on and off, so thank you for that. The only cleaning I've done was to use a soft paintbrush to remove tons of lint that covered every surface. It was especially packed into the bobbin area. I think someone over-oiled and then it spilled out all over the back when the sewing machine was tucked back inside the cabinet. I have some kerosene (a nice one for oil lamps that doesn't have a strong odor) and will use that to do some cleaning. Even my husband loves the design of the Singer 301, much to my surprise. He said if he were to get a sewing machine for himself (never knew he'd thought about that before), it'd be one with a nice industrial design. We're both smitten as kittens with this purchase.

I love my 301. Thank you for an excellent explanation of “all the things.” The built in yellowing gunk is usually from the old owner over oiling and then when they sew, it slings bitty beads of oil for years, hence the unknown buildup. I didn’t know about the horizontal lines on the pressure plate to help turn corners. Definitely looking forward to using that feature. 💙🧵🪡 Happy sewing!

I learned a lot. Now I want one of these. I already have 4 working Singer vintage machines, a serger and a 3 year old Pfaff. It gets addicting. Such a good video. Love your giggle.

Excellent tour. Thank you. Your explanation of accessories is best I have found. The LED you showed is a bayonet mount. Your suggestion to use a clear plastic hose to mount the light is spot on. This is also the best 301 video I have seen. I have a 404 but need to resurrect it. 👍👍

I have a 404. My favorite straight stitch is my 1946 Kenmore. It is cast aluminum (brown crinkle). (I think this is the wheel away v. toward movement). It sews through everything, and it is a full rotary. It makes the most beautiful stitches. It's a great piecing machine for quilting. It has the forked feet. It is easy to find sets of feet which do an amazing number of things. The nice thing about vintage machines is that they still make all of the replacement parts (rubber wheels, motors, foot pedal). They are very simple, so they don't break down nor require annual service. But grease/oil is important.

Obviously I love old machines! One bonus to my teaching is I get to “play” with my student’s machines - keeps me from buying every vintage machine I see!

Dead giveaway to know when someone is a new sewer when they call the machine cabinets as a table instead of a cabinet. To an old timer it’s pretty funny

Yes you could! You would need to drop the feed dogs, which is very easy with this machine.
