As someone who had to do some research for a paper about beavers, I want to share some knowledge about these incredible creatures. I had to sit a lot on google maps searching for and counting potential beaver sites, and one of the signs of potential beaver activity in the area are those trail lines in the grass at 2:19 (lower left corner) and 3:59 (top). For another fact, beaver lodges have ventilation holes and in winter small rodents like to take warm shelter in those holes. Rodents attract foxes, who sometimes like to visit beaver lodges for a snack and to probably warm up a bit before moving on with their daily activities. On my winter expeditions I have seen their footprints around and on top of beaver structures. Maybe foxes might be more common around beaver sites in WolfQuest during winter? :D

I absolutely love this! Not only did you show us some new map additions/changes (And it was nice to see a google maps comparison after playing even more of Slough Creek, because I was beginning to recognize way more from the real thing, than in-game.) but I loved just hearing some beaver facts. I never thought about how the river/stream going from a large strip to suddenly narrow on maps could mean a beaver was around, but now that you pointed it out, I just find myself fascinated... Like the majority of people, I knew beavers built dams or small lodges in still waters, but I never really thought about where/the signs of them. I've only seen a beaver once in the wild when camping a few hours up from where I live, years ago, but it sort of makes me want to look for more signs that wildlife has left behind/changed, once we return to a... More "normal", less indoors world, haha. Thank you for teaching us about this on top of more game design.

I’ve heard that wolves ambush beavers by lying down nearby, usually downwind to avoid being smelled by beavers, and taking advantage of the beaver’s poor eyesight. I’m super interested about how we’ll be hunting beavers in the game, especially if they aren’t easy to catch since they’re so close to water, and if it’s a similar tactic to real life!

Wow! I’m super exited for these new animals, hunting mule deer and elk for the pups is sometimes to much and it’s kinda unnecessary to kill bigger things when the pups aren’t extremely hungry so beavers will solve a lot of these problems! Make sure you all don’t work yourselves to hard though!! I have a few questions if that’s alright, in the future ofc will ground squirrels be added? Maybe fish? (if they even are in Yellowstone I’m not too sure)
@WolfQuestGame3 жыл бұрын
Yellowstone wolves don't really fish. It is interesting how animals specialize. We were surprised about fishing too -because what carnivore wouldn't want a nice, fat trout? But basically, predators will always look to expend the least effort for the most calories. The amount of energy needed to catch enough fish to feed your whole wolf family is not worth it compared to an elk feast that will sustain a pack for a week or so. Smaller, opportunistic predators like coyotes might consider fishing worth their time if easier meals are not available. The salmon runs in the Pacific NW are different because they are super easy meals in great quantity (but only last for a short amount of time so not a reliable source). So if you are a wolf in Alaska, you wouldn't say no to a few weeks at the salmon buffet. But if you are a wolf in Yellowstone where the big fish are few and far between, you probably wouldn't bother taking the time to fish. Players, of course, might find it fun to try but then we'd have to build all sorts of new animations for something that really isn't integral to wolf life in Yellowstone. The same could be said for ground squirrels, in terms of energy needed for low calories. Also, they sleep almost all year long! As far as game fun, they would be so tiny! Even smaller than the hares.
