The blindfolds most probably are a visual representation of how blind we are about the future. All we can do is imagine how things will be, not predict what actually it's going to be. Very powerful visual representation here. Take it as time is everyone's enemy that can't be defeated.

Rammstein is not only a Rockband, they are artists. All videos are movies, telling a story. On stage they are fantastic. I saw them 4 weeks ago in Dresden, Germany, and as a 67 year old man, i was absolutely overwhelmed by their performance.

I like the idea of this song. Everybody knows the perfect moment of their death, at least we think of it, we dream of it - old and happy, surrounded by loved ones and family, or at the peak moment at some heroic battlefield. But it's never like we want, it's random and horrifying, because time has no mercy.

Not the Grim Reaper These are The Norn, three hooded sisters aka Time Keepers, Time Weavers, Time Spinner's from Northern European Mythology (Brittonic, Germanic and Nordic). Very basically they represent Passed, Present and Future they guide us through our lives. They are extremely similar to the Greek/Roman Fates. Think you missed the First/Last Gasped Breath at the very end.

Yes, the reminiscence to the old, pre-Christian Nordic mythology is unmistakable. The three sinister, faceless figures definitely don't stand for the Grim Reaper but rather symbolize the Norns, (Old Norse 'Norns' - the Murmurers) They're immortal female figures, sisters, who sit at the foot of Yggdrasil, the world ash tree on the banks of the Urd River and spin the thread of fate for all creatures. Their names are Urd, Verdandi and Skuld... Urd (means what was) is the namesake of the river and has the form of an old woman who always looks over her shoulder behind her to the past. Verdandi (means what is) has the form of a young woman, which stands for the present. Skuld (guilt or what should be/will be) is an ambiguous figure and no friend of men and gods. The Norns spin the thread of life for each person and if the thread is cut at the end of the allotted period of life, the person dies. In Germany there is an old saying that is still used till today that is reminiscent of this ancient, pre-Christian belief. "his life is just hanging by a thread". this saying describes the danger for a terminally ill person.

I really liked the representation of the different members either fighting, blocking, or accepting the flow of time when they had the sand rushing past them while blindfolded. Creepiest visual for me was when we got a peek up inside the pillar of sand flowing towards "Future". There's nothing to hold on to. That sand only takes us to "Future".

A couple of things, i would like to point out: The three figures represent the norns Udr, Skuld and Verdandi, roughly representing past, present and future. They have an ever changing face and no discernable shape. The "reapers" were, quite literally the band members in the final verse. (You could interpret this as time just is, it doesn't kill, people do that) Time was represnted as rough sea (did you notice the sky mirrored the water?) and, as you noticed, the flowing sand (the birth scene is shaped like an hourglass). Everybody navigates that flow blindly, although everyone deals with it differently (fighting it like Till or stoically like Oliver and so on) The daughter gets to see all that and play with it for a short while (after dying) before she vanishes inside the flow. The sand faces of the band show how we shape time for a short while before vanishing. In the end crredits you can see, that the faces and the sculpture were actually done by artists and not CGI.

You can find a version of this video on KZbin which runs in reverse both audio and video. If you look at that video and listen to the audio of the original video, the images still work. So they probably shot and edited the entire music video with that in mind. Incredible!

BTW: All the sand as well as the sand sculptures were not animated. It was real sand and the sculptures were made by british artist Baldrick Buckle. The blindfolds might resample that we are not aware of time most of the… well, time. Also they came in handy so that the actors do not get sand in their eyes. :-)

Speaking of devil in the details: once again i struggle with the subtitles, simply because the double meanings are missing. "schon ist der moment vorbei" is translated to "the moment is already over", but it should be "the moment is already gone", because the german word "vorbei" also means to pass something, so it could mean you are the one who is moving, not the time. Also "zeit, bitte bleib stehen, bleib stehen" has a double meaning, it could be "time, please stay standing....", means like to stay strong, but it also means "time, please stand still". Last one is "wenn unsere Zeit gekommen ist, dann ist es zeit zu gehen", its translated to "when our time has come, then its time to go" and it kind of have a double meaning in english, but it actually translate to "...then its time to leave", so its just the end, not the start. but imho this one actually better fits with the english double meaning. It will always be hard to translate double meaning, but its so important i think... greetings from germany. :)

Rammstein is an experience. I saw them in 2012 in Atlanta. The show was beyond amazing. I thought KISS liked fire but Rammstein is next level. KISS was an inspiration from what I've read and seen from band members.

But the origins of Rammstein are in Schwerin and the surrounding landscape, where Richard Kruspe and Till Lindemann 1986 (->GDR) are members of the band First Arsch. the other members of Rammstein are also born in the GDR. They treat the topic GDR in their music, e.g. in the imagery to 'Deutschland', but especially in the lyrics of 'Radio'. About the blindfolded Eyes: I had read an Interpretation of this somewhere and it went in this direction: It symbolises Human Ignorance of Creation, where Life comes from in the first Place. The Man receives the Gift and passes it on to the Woman. Man and Woman are performers but not Creators It can be understood in this or a similar way. About the three Figures: Norne (goddess of fate in Norse Mythology) In Norse Mythology, the Norns are female beings who determine fate. Three Women of destiny are mentioned by Name: They are called Urd (fate), Verdandi (the becoming) and Skuld (guilt; that which is to be).

Lyrically it deals with the themes of transience and death as well as the inevitable progression of time. Transience… Rammstein turn back the wheel of time - at least in film. The musicians, who initially seem to be floating dead in the sea, gradually slip back into the rowing boat - until they encounter an eerie figure in a hooded cloak, which could well be the Grim Reaper, but is probably supposed to represent time itself. In the war scenes that follow, the images also run backwards. And suddenly there are no longer soldiers with rifles facing each other, but rather boys with sticks. Then the hooded figure only introduces the central scene of the video by handing the boys from the forest who have become babies into the hands of their fathers, who in turn push the little ones back into their mother's womb. All around, the sands of time do not fall down, but rise up. In the following farmer scene, bassist Oliver Riedel experiences the worst thing that can happen to parents: he loses his daughter to time or death. “Time” by Rammstein is a song about the inevitability of change and the power of time. The song talks about the passing of moments that can never be repeated, as well as the feeling of nostalgia when you wish you could go back to a certain moment that has already passed. The lyrics convey a strong message to appreciate and enjoy the present while you have it, because it will soon disappear and be forgotten. The song encouraged listeners to appreciate the beauty of the moments we experience as the constant march of time continues to march forward

If i remember correctly there are two sides to those blindfolds. For one as already mentioned as a symbol for blindness to our own future/fate. But the more real story is that rammstein was shooting base material of those scenes in a hall with real sand gun equipment and with fine sand so they also needed some eye protection during those shots. So .. kind of a lucky match in the end.

When ever you come across a German "Z" that letter is always consistent pronounced like "TS" (that pronuciation sounds as like in the term "Tsunami" for instance) so "Zeit" kinda sounds like saying the English term "site" but with a T upfront = "tsite" and it is not pronounced with the kinda buzzing "English Z" pronunciation Actually you sounded like saying "seit" which actually means "since" in German. No critic just an info.

8:05 - I agree, you really never see the graphic part of an actual birth in media. Never the actual baby coming out of the woman's vagina and certainly not something like a C-section. Then again, there isn't really ever a narrative reason to show that I guess and it would in all likelihood also affect the rating of the movie or TV show episode negatively. I do not know, obviously, but I don't think that that is animated. To me it looks like practical effects with a realistic-looking fake baby and well.. a realistic fake lower half of a lady let's say. On an unrelated note, I'm not a native German speaker, but I think a better translation of "Bitte bleibt stehen, bleibt stehen" in the chorus would be "Please stand still, stand still" rather than "Please stay standing, stay standing"

Great reaction to an amazing tune! Rammstein nail it...again, but why the feeling of 'shock'? Is the 'graphical' nature of what they present? I do find it endlessly comical that we here in North America (predominantly) don't bat an eye to violence & gore, but show something as natural as birth, and we get squeamish! By contrast, I know this is not the case in much of Europe. Regardless, Rammstein have no issues showing the world as it is. Brilliant song, musicianship, lyrics and of course, presentation - it's all there. Cheers.
