Yeah, I'm hoping they also lean into the "evil" route more than their previous games. I love FO4, Skyrim and FO3, but they were kind of lacking in morally corrupt options. New Vegas was the only game under Bethesda that really allowed you to be an actual evil bastard; Kill who you want, tell some dude him and his dead brother are bitches, etc etc. I'm hoping for more of that in Starfield :P. Personally I usually play morally "upright" characters because I end up feeling bad for the NPC's when I'm evil but having the option just adds more replayability and makes your actions feel genuinely impactful.

that gravity bending power is straight up misinformation. It's VERY obvious that Todd is talking about bending gravity for grav jumping and NOT for the "power" we saw at the end of the direct.
@ESOdanny Жыл бұрын
If you listen, he starts off talking about the lore behind warp drives/grav drives then he says ‘we do get into gravity, how that effects people in the universe, how they bend it, how they feel about that’ 25:39 If you look at his face he smiles before saying too much. Theirs clearly something interesting regarding powers (that we see in the trailer) and their connection to gravity. It’s the closets mention we have about the power we saw in the reveal trailer and given the grounded themes of starfield it would make sense. But we will find out in July if I was right or not. Hopefully it won't be like the time I announced The Elder Scrolls 6 Redfall (which my goodness fited perfectly with the fall of the redguards in hammerfell).
@Veldore Жыл бұрын
@@ESOdanny Quite literally. How it affects people = how lower / higher gravity affects human physiology/ people may get sick during grav jumps like people get seasick on boats, how they bend it = warp drives, and how they feel about it = How humanity usually gathers together in cities / planets rather than each ship owner having the power to go literally anywhere, live alone or escape persecution by going to some outreach of the galaxy. It just seems like Todd is stating that gravity indeed has a large focus in the game and maybe it does relate to that power we saw. The way it was a follow up to the grav drive explanation also makes that seem likely. Not to say that the powers shown at the end of the direct aren't various gravity related powers, that also seems likely given the time bethesda seems to have put into their gravity systems in this game with the different gravities on each planet and the IGN interviewer who got a hands on experience talking about a ship with a faltering artificial gravity that turned on and off periodically.

If nothing else, I really hope this game is awesome and isn't a bug-ridden mess. I'm still holding off on buying it until I see a few days worth of Steam reviews, but for a Bethesda game, I REALLY want this one to hit the ground running and to be an absolute banger! I'm at least glad that Todd is keeping his responses more grounded this time around.
@TwistedSisler Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't trust a steam review if my life depended on it to be honest. The amount of poorly reviewed games that I just absolutely loved is insane. Not to mention Steam does no moderation on reviews so you can literally just say "Game sucks" and review it negatively and that's not really an actual review of the game but counts towards the score. I always recommend, instead either trying the game yourself or watching someone else play through it for a bit to get a more accurate feel about how YOU feel about the game, not about how others feel about it, because ultimately if you like it is what actually matters. That said, expect bugs. A game this massive will always have bugs, it's just inevitable. At least BGS bugs are usually just funny stuff happening and nothing game breaking.
@sillyking1991 Жыл бұрын
oh i absolutely expect it to be a bug ridden mess. what i hope for is that its kept at the levels that are typical of bethesda releases (i.e. bug ridden, but playable and even enjoyable) rather than what has become the standard for big new releases (i.e. cyberpunk 2077, halo infinite, fallout 76) where the game is unplayable on release and as a result basically tanks.
@SpinDlsc Жыл бұрын
@@TwistedSisler Parsing, my friend. Takes a bit of digging sometimes, but there are some good reviews in the swarm of bad ones. Also, the ratio is still generally a good indicator of knowing how the audience as a whole reacts to the PC version of the game. I've read from others that GOG reviews generally tend to be better, but I'm not a GOG user, myself. It's definitely true though. Reviews should be moderated on Steam and should at least have some thought behind them, and be more than 500 characters in length.
@TwistedSisler Жыл бұрын
@@SpinDlsc Regardless though, in general I couldn't care less how someone else feels about a video game. I care about how I feel about it. No amount of good or bad reviews will give me the experience of seeing it or playing it for myself for me to decide with my own brain, not with someone else's. What I tend to do is start watching a let's play of something and the moment I realize I'm interested, I shut it off and buy the game to play it myself. If I'm interested but it's not the type of game I would play myself then I'll keep watching. I don't care if the person playing it likes the game or not because they aren't me. Hope that makes sense. My opinion is that game reviews just influence someone else's opinion of something onto you before you even go into it and I see that as very bad. I will always advocate for people playing games for themselves to see if THEY like it, not worry about what other people think about it.

My biggest concern is that planets will feel like (for example) Skyrim instances or dungeons. You will always land on the same spot with a cutscene, instead of manually land on a spot you like. Atleast for me this can disrupt the whole immersion. I hope a skilled modder will create this. Now it just feels like you won't explore planets anyway, you just land through a cutscene, do what you want to do, and leave instead of getting in your spaceship, fly 100 miles over the surface and land again. We will see how it plays, i won't judge now but this bothers me.

I'm not even entirely sure I like the idea that you can just see on a map where everything is and you don't have to find the places, though it makes perfect sense in universe. Its funny to me hearing an interviewer ask Bethesda about the importance of music transition in an open world. Thats one area Bethesda nailed down decades ago with the elder scrolls series. The theme from Moreowind was still Oblivion and skyrim with adaptations that just matched the changed atmosphere very well. Even Fallout series had an atmosphere about it that the music centred around. Maybe not to everyone’s taste but they do music pretty well traditionally.

35:42, I think you're making a huge assumption. Perhaps Todd was making a bit of a double-entendre there, but it's in the context of the ship's technology. I think he just means how people feel about the technology of grav (warp) drives and bending space with them. Much like how there's controversy around the development of AI today. I wouldn't say "OMG THAT'S HUGE," like he's referencing some taboo, forbidden magic like necromancy, because I don't think he's even talking about the force-like powers we saw at the end of the direct. It is interesting nonetheless but I'm pretty sure it's just about the implications and people's perspectives on such advanced technology.

But I also get that they can't do the elder scrolls type of exploration in a game like Starfield. In return starfield will offer something new. I'm excited for it. And even if it turns out underwhelming, there are still tons of quests and factions to mess around with.

why can't they do elder scrolls style exploration?
@ethantwolfe Жыл бұрын
@@sillyking1991 Scale. You can (relatively) easily walk around and explore a province on a continent on the planet in Elder Scrolls. Doing multiple entire planets -- let alone 1000 different ones -- is an insane concept by all margins. This is both in the ability to manually design and write and create content for, but also on a technical level. Is it realistic to walk an entire planet, manually fly into space with no loading screen and then fly to another planet -- again, with no loading screen? No. Beyond that, it is in space -- and space is vast and desolate. In concept and form, it is different than elder scrolls world and lore exploration -- inherently.

@acamporota Жыл бұрын
those are all good point that you are making. Especially when you talk the exploration like in a fallout or skyrim..where you can go out of the main city and after 1 minute you can find something else to explore because more or less everything is at walkable distance...and is part of the fun to explore... in starfield I am concern about this. If the main city is on a full planet, there is a good chance that outside of the city it self there is only an empty landscape, and if you want to find another point on interest you will need to jump on your ship.... go on a random planet, land on a random area, to have generated an enemy base, outpost, cavern or stuff like that, which after a while will all look very similar. will be hard to have that sense of exploration like fallout 4 because now the space to walk is gigantic, I hope I am wrong because this could potentially be a big issue if all the time i want to explore something i need to pass by my ship

I don't think planets will be planet-sized or worth exploring for longer than 30 minutes unless there is specific handcrafted content you are aiming to do. Evidence that suggests this at 21:14, the whole survey of the planet is 7 fauna, 5 flora. Five different plants on the whole planet. Seven animals.

For sure, beyond experiencing what that is like, recorces, collecting survey data to sell for 100%. It's not the main gameplay loop I don't think, but people always ask about it so it seems like its heavily weighted.

The point you made with the 30 second rule was so good. Have to think the beginning part of the game is in the more populated areas where that's no problem and then they begin to push you out to some of the desolation etc. Because yeah like playing fallout 4 I climb to a top of a building and look out, I can see something that I want to go find. Just won't be possible here all the time.

ohhhh, someone mentioned that they couldn't do elder scrolls style exploration somewhere in the comments and it confused me...this makes sense, yeah. @@liveyourlifeb4endit’s something Bethesda does in their games where if you wander in any direction they want there to be something interesting to find every 30 seconds.
Having played Privateer 1 and 2 many years ago, smuggling and scan-shielded cargo were great elements. All fans of the original Star Trek TV series are completely familiar with the line "More power to the shields!" Those who have played Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic are very familiar with the Ebon Hawk which you can upgrade with internal crafting features. Those familiar with Entropia, featuring a real life cash convertible currency, know well the capabilities of their flying ships which can both fly between planets and also easily and deftly land and take off and fly at nap-of-the-earth like altitudes to explore planet surfaces. Starfield has not adopted that particular feature but it has adopted many very satisfying aspects derived from previous spacefaring games. We all can't wait but I bet we're going to ! ..

One of my biggest concerns is how the randomness of the procedural generation is going to affect location modding, since "no two players will see the exact same thing". Someone may build a Starfield version of Legacy of the Dragonborn, only to have it not work for anyone else because the location is under a mountain, or in an ocean, or in the sky above a ravine...
@av93 Жыл бұрын
Something tells me that they will enable modders to lock planets to a specific seed to keep consistency. In other words, when you download and activate a mod that affects a specific planet, that planet will be consistent across everyone's game who has the mod installed. You'd probably have to start a new save file for it to work correctly though. That or they could give modders the toolset to make the locations and it'll randomly place it just like Bethesda's own content. Edit: obviously sticking to the rules of the random generation. The game probably knows to flatten a certain piece of ground to make a point of interest fit and make sense.
@georgejones5019 Жыл бұрын
The planet was procedurally generated with parameters to make it look natural and realistic, then saved in that state. It was a tool to save the developers' time. Then they went in and placed hand crafted sections like enemy bases, or abandoned facilities, or crashed ships.
@TwistedSisler Жыл бұрын
My guess is that 1. Either there is a check in place to ensure that nothing gets placed on top of content that's been hand placed there. or 2. modded locations will have to just go into the lottery of possible locations that get placed down when you land on the planet.
@sillyking1991 Жыл бұрын
well they almost certainly aren't going to generate the entire surface of a planet for every single planet. if you just choose to randomly land on a given planet, then you'll get a procedually generated instance. But i would imagine that for some missions or quests, you may get custom instances for a given planet. thus mods could simply use that. either that or when they talked about procedural generation they were talking about having generated all the landscapes procedurally to prevent the need for an artist to go in and hand craft 1000+ planets.
@AlexConnor_ Жыл бұрын

Modders are going to go wild and already have plans from their imaginations written down in their notebooks. I just hope that Todd and Bethesda have a set limit to a set percentage amount of planets/celestial bodies that can be modded. Perhaps 30% of all them, because the rest need to remain unpopulated, with the exception of resources and then building outposts once discovered and if needed, depending on the value and rarity of said resources. I for one, do not want all 1000+ planets populated with tons of stuff, as it would take away from realism. A few alien life forms would be a great addition too. I can hardly wait to play this amazing game! 😎

I’m curious about dynamic missions spawned in terms of your trade routes getting pirate. Like what if one of your ships is in a it’s trade route off in another system and it gets attacked by pirates. So you then have to quickly travel to defend it or salvage what is left of it. If over done this idea would be tiring and old but if done in a healthy quantity, I think it would be fun! I just hope I’m not ever 5 jumps away from my trade ship when it is getting attacked. Would be sucky to be doing something elaborate and then get a message from your crew saying they are under attack and you have to quickly fly over there from millions of light years away. A sort of “quick a settlement needs your help!” situation could get ugly real fast like we see in F4. Please no space minutemen! 😅😅😅
