Nice camp - lovely sounds of Spring in the forest there. The winds on the Solway have been relentless - so many trees down. Must get into the loft and dust off my camping gear! Cheers…

Great Camp Dave, Classic Border Rambler style:) I hope to be heading up North soon, I've got a plan just hatched today, a motorcycle trip to Isle of Skye. I'd leave tomorrow if I could but I need to research a bit first. May stop for an overnight break in the Border regions. Not sure to exact dates but maybe in the next 2 or 4 or 6 weeks!!! As I say the plan has just been hatched:) Maybe we could do a Colab Camp? Sandy

Thanks Sandy yeah typical BR style camp 😂 sounds like a plan Sandy let me know when you have done concrete dates and see if we can fit a camp in the southern uplands / borders . Are you planning on going up the M6 north or M1 north ? Atb Dave

Good to see you out in the craggy Bewcastle Fells again Dave. Dodging the wind is a real ordeal, factoring in a good vantageous camp ground, tucked away to evade strong gusts, is quite a bit of a recurring challenge. Good mods on your tent. I have been using an Enan, only one overnight backpack so far this year, up on the Kielder Fells, a similar windy conundrum, but fully guyed and tensioned, worked out OK. Planning on Southern Uplands next, will have to reckon with more wind no doubt, never mind.
@BorderRambler2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Iain , yes it’s a game of cat and mouse with the wind ! I thought I cracked it until the wind turned direction 😂 good to hear you have been up in the hills , how do you find the Enan I was looking at some vids on it the other day . Basically a lighter Akto ? Condensation any better . I do miss the Akto as I always felt safe in real wild weather . I’m hoping to be back in the SU on Sunday for some more exploring . Tfw atb Dave
@iainsharples14332 жыл бұрын
@@BorderRambler I am really liking the Enan, very versatile and light. Interior is a little more taut above your head which is nice, through venting can work well. Look forward to hearing how you get on in the SU, I'm heading over to do a circuit in the Megget Res area, as soon as I get the time. Just to add that the profile is accommodating to tight pitching spaces as oft the case on these upland heather moors.

Cannot remember a winter when we have had one storm after another and its so sad to see all those fallen trees. Looked tough going up through the forest to get to the crags and it looked like you had a nice sheltered pitch, enabling a real nice time lapse. Shame about the wind changing and missing the sunrise but when you miss the rain in the night and keep dry getting back, a good camp, cheers Alan

Good to see you back up those crags and the mods on the MSR looked spot on Dave. Sick of all this blinking wind, feels like it's been non stop windy and cold since the start of the year. Good to see the house at Blacklyne hasn't suffered any more mindless damage - infact it looked a bit more tidied up. Is that a Wild Sky aluminium mat you're using? I bought one of those and don't think it's half as warm as the Chinese foil mats you can get on eBay for under a tenner, they pack down about the same as well. Those photo's of your tent illuminated were pretty special as was the time-lapse. Another good 'un Dave, always an enjoyable watch tfs :)

Thanks Donna , I was back at my old faithful camp spot lol , I camped the other night on a summit and guess what very little wind 😎👍 the foil mat us just a lightweight protective cover more than anything . Excellent mods Dave. Sometimes Ive had to put both trek pole handles up in the 2 Apex points...that works well also. Good to see most of the trees have been cleared but great shame 'THEY' have barricaded the cottage like that. I used that on Winter walks to make a brew outa the weather. Its not as if it ever got vandalised either...llama_annie

I like your videos Dave..great photography and very down to earth, common sense, commentary. I also have a hubba NX and also noticed that the inner and outer were quite close high up at the back. The first thing I did after I bought it was to tie shock cord to the bottom centre tie out to pull the outer out further from the inner. I then tensioned the two rear corners to pull the tent back. This gave a better gap but wasn’t right - the outer was too tight and all the seams were completely misaligned with the poles. Anyway I think I’ve cracked it! I tried pegging down the central tie out without pulling it out too much and with a bit of experimenting I think I have the ideal set up!! 1. Peg the rear centre tie out so that it’s approx 4 ins away from the inner (so that the rear wall is slightly off vertical) 2. the bottom of the inner should be about 2 ins off the ground (you can use a tiny loop of shock cord for this if you like) 3. Evenly tension all 4 corners so that the outer aligns with the pole structure. This results in a gap at the top of about an inch albeit in reality it’s a lot more as this is where the vent projects out on the outer. I think if you pull the bottom out too far with shock cording, all this does is push the outer- top further in, so that it touches the inner. When you think about it, that’s probably the reason MSR didn’t put shock cording on that tie-out in the first place!
@BorderRambler2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words Tim , I always thought it was because we never pitch on bowling green type surfaces . I will try it removing the centre shock cord next time I pitch the Hubba and follow your instructions . Think you might be right about it pulling it out too far at the bottom. Tfw atb Dave ⛺️👍

Great mods Dave - do you think the mods brought it close to the performance of your Access 2? Obviously it doesn't have the space or the 'less mesh;' but I've been a bit disappointed with the degree of flexing that happens with my Access 2 on a windy day even with the addition of a number of guylines...you looked well comfy with the bit of shelter behind you even on that windy night! Great to hear the bird song again for sure 😉
@BorderRambler2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miriam , I reckon the mods have improved the stability of the Hubba , and being a smaller tent with less material probably as stable as the access 2 . The MSRs don’t have the rock solid ability to say the Hilleberg’s . It was a comfortable camp trying to avoid the wind lol . TFW atb Dave
