Years ago I lived in a rather remote area of the east Kootneys in bc, Canada. It was about two hours north east of Nelson. It is a stuningly beautiful area with a diverse wildlife. By he second summer I'd had quite a number of hummming regulars feeding from the feeders I'd set up. They got to trusting me so completely, they'd take turns riding on my head and shoulders as I'd collect the feeders each morning and evening to wash and refill. By the third summer I had so many hummers I was gong through two 10 Kg bags of sugar. But what I found really amazing was how they'd line up on the closeline as if to wait their turn at one of the six feeders available. We had a rather longer than average closeline which they used to rest on while seeming to wait their turn, lined up side by side. That is one of the things I miss a lot since having to move out of the area due to medical issues. I often wonder how many bags of sugar I'd be using if I still lived there. Quite a few I imagine. Finding this video brought to mind a great many, wonderfull memories. Fabulous! Excellent camera person.

Years ago I used to have a little hummingbird friend in my backyard. We knew each other but it was never quite brave enough to come really close to me. It would bathe in the spray of water when I would water the plants and kick back on the fence nearby. ^_^

so amazing we have them here this summer, with many fuchia trees they are constantly around the house. Both front and back. The feeders not so much. They give way to the bees, and the bees love these flowers too. they are pretty territorial and protect the trees hovering over every flower.

Your video is absolutely wonderful. You clearly said WE NO LONGER USE RED DYE. Throughout the video you are clearly using red dye in all of your feedings. Many people mesmerized by the filming of these adorable trusting angels may not have noticed that you clearly said WE NO LONGER USE RED DYE. Your formula is simply perfect. I also use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water (eg 1/2 cup ordinary white table sugar dissolved in 2 cups warm tap water) I keep the amount small to be sure they drink it within a few days). I am in Toronto and we only have the ruby throated hummers. I have several hummingbird feeders (from Dollarama $3.50 foot high red plastic with 4 flowers) My previous ones had metal roof but also the flower base which holds the nectar. You could not take it apart to clean. Everything metal rusted and the flowers were also sharp edges so I now stay with plastic. My Ruby throats arrive mid May and stay until September. Adorable, trusting, brave little guys. Nest the size of golf balls lined with dandelion white fluffy "Santa Claus" and actually use spider webs in construction.

Very HAPPY to hear that you no longer use the 'Red Dye.' But what are the red caps?? Keep in mind that you truly DO NOT need any of that extra material. The way feeders are made, they have plenty of red, yellow, and other assorted colors that Hummers are attracted to already incorporated in to them. At least your making your own nectar now, and Yes! That does save you a lot of 'Eagle Shit.' Retired U.S. Marine. Keep in mind that Feeder Maintenance is of paramount importance. You should wash your feeders at LEAST twice a week. I cleanse mine with every feeding/refill, and i also use a vinegar solution every two weeks. It removes all the excess stickiness form the sugary nectar, and also helps to eliminate the harmful bacteria's that can build up over time. I have done pretty good with Hummers over the years. If you have any questions, Please feel free to ask, and Please do share as well. One other helpful hand feeding idea that really works, but WATCH OUT!! When you go out to have a pleasant hand feeding session, put on a red shirt, but as i said; WATCH OUT!! You will get mobbed!! Especially once your Hummers recognize you, which they will. I'm not sure where you live but humming birds are pretty much everywhere in the U.S. including many cities. I live in city with a population of about 120,000 and I am visited by hummingbirds every day. If you have any outdoor space at all put out some flower pots with red petunias. Then buy some hummingbird feeders and hang them there as well. Hummingbirds have really good eyesight and will see your place from more than a mile away. It is very likely that they fly within a mile of where you live regularly and it will only be a matter of time before they come to visit.

I saw one in Austin that I was never able to identify. It had a black head and orange cheek patches, both colors being vibrant. I was so caught up in the head that I can only guess that the body was green. Been looking in books since then.

I have only held onto a hummingbird when fallen from a nest, or tree--a fledgling?! It died--so sad! From shock when falling. I buried him in the garden. Sweetest little hummingbird never held a hummingbird again. Btw, is the red dye safe for sugared water?

Try water and honey instead of sugar. Honey has got lots of vitamins and minerals that sugar has not. Honey is a better food and more suited for humnming birds than sugar is. I assure you they will absolutely love it : )

That's essentially what the nectar is and what they need to live; they have to eat constantly. There is a preferred ration, and as stated in one of his other video's they stopped using the red dye. You need to be careful in not putting to little sugar and/or any dye's that will harm them.

@paul8kangas Hummingbirds require the calorie load from sugar to fuel their fast metabolism. They do not just need sweet stuff. Feeding them stevia would cause them to starve to death wasting their energy on empty sweetness.

Please do not use red commercial mix like them. It contains chemicals that give hummingbirds blood clots! Correct home formula (much cheaper and organic) is 1/4 cup cane sugar mixed with 1 cup clean filtered water. Stores 1 week in fridge, 3 days in feeder. Clean out feeder well since mold grows easily with sugar. Feeder should be bright red and yellow as these birds see these colors.

This is really lovely, but i must ask, if you are feeding them necter then these birds don't go out and look for their own amongst the local flowers, so their role as pollinators is being subverted and the flowers don't get pollinated like nature intended.
