Thanks for this one Mike, still rebuilding my 90 onto its new chassis. Getting there but having problems with indicators and wipers. Will get there in the end. Keep them coming Mike, really informative and enjoyable vids.

Hi Mike. When you adjust the nut, is it necessary to have the front wheels of the ground, jacked up?
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
Best with wheels up as you take the weight off the steering
@Bluepilchard8 ай бұрын
So when there's there's a lot of slack in the straight ahead position movement on the steering wheel and the nut with the alan key is turned in as far as it goes with out it being forced down there is still slack does that mean it's too worn on the worm screw and a new box is now the only option
@BritannicaRestorations8 ай бұрын
Could be - it would need stripping and maybe adjusting from scratch - the main selector shaft needs removing to set the worm - could be a bad bearing

Hello I am the owner of a Discovery 1 and a Jaguar MK10 with 420 power steering. I follow with very much interest your channel. But in the case of the Adwest power steering box play I could not fully agree. The steering worm is not from a constant diameter. The diameter varies. Minimum in the center and increasing to both sides, in such a way that the wheel in the steering arm maintains a constant distance with the worm gear. In adittion the gear ratio varies the steering id slower in the central position and faster in both sides. I wonder how the designers in the sixties could desing such a piece without any kind of CAD

My disco 2 has a lot of play in the steering. 210000 miles. You reckon adjustment make any difference or needs a new steering box?
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
Yes you should be able to adjust it out

Hi Mike. Great videos by the way my drop arm has just started to leak fluid is there excess pressure buils up when on full lock and is that the reason for the leak. It was fine and i'm doing some restoration work on it (Disco 1 V8 ) so have to keep moving it in and out of the workshop. The thing is it just started leaking today is this cause by pressure build up getting in and out of the workshop. TIA Andy.

You should not hold the steering on full lock for more than a few seconds, but it seems the lower seal is in need of a replacement anyway

I'd imagine that there would be more engagement points from the worm gear to shaft instead of just one,like a daisy with slotted petals? Are any other steering boxes retrofitable?

There are 3 teeth on the main shaft wheel They are a strong box, but older ones are prone to leaks

hello I’ve got a quick question for you there’s movement in my steering wheel even though I’m not turning the corner is driving straight excessive movement would you say the steering box is no good excessive movement even when it’s parked up not running does the box need adjusting I’ve tried to adjust the box but it seems like it’s binding any help would be much appreciated thanks
@BritannicaRestorations4 ай бұрын
You didn't mention what vehicle it is, but I would not recommend you adjusting the steering box without experience as you can make the problem worse - try to find a local independent shop to have a look - will not cost much, but better than the box locking up on the road!

@BritannicaRestorations3 ай бұрын
So all the steering components are in good order and you still have problems? You could have the steering box overhauled, but I would have a competent mechanic check the steering, axle bushes, swivel balls etc. first. Sounds like a poorly maintained vehicle

I have a blog and it includes this page on rebuilding a Series steering box. The worm gear, main nut and rocker shaft arrangement are very similar to the Adwest box and it has the same play at each side, and is also susceptible to damage if adjusted offset. The photos of the internal parts may help your explanation. I think the play is specifically the main nut travelling along the slot of the rocker shaft fork at full lock, not the length of the nut from the rocker shaft axis (that length increase ought to decrease radial play if other factors weren’t present): www.nickslandrover.co.uk/steering-box/
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The design of the series box is better in the fact that the recirculating ball cage has a locating pin which moves on the selector shaft /output slot, where as the Adwest is rather like an old worm and wheel gearbox - only due to the constraints of design, there are only one tooth on the selector 'wheel', so in extreme left and right positions the tooth contact is reduced, hence play, but the series should have no play in the same situation as the pin is allowed to move in the slot
