Personally, I don't like listening to anything on my runs. I feel like running is one of few occasions where I'm not listening or looking at a screen or book and being outside. Being with your own thoughts and looking at nature is so nice

Another question: Do pro athletes also have pro feet? How can you so easily shift between New Balance and ON ? I’ve got New Balance shoes. My parents love their ONs, I’ve tried them on once and they’re far too narrow for my feet. I thought that brands cater to slightly different feet. Some are narrower and some are wider. Going to a running store even as an absolute amateur they take great care filming my feet in different shoes to find a good shoe for my individual feet. My head just spins around: Shouldn’t at the pro level shoes be absolutely optimised like everything else? Or do you all have impervious pro feet? At the world record level the naive amateur I am would actually expect custom shoes based on the molds of your feet. Or are shoes just not that important? On the other hand, contracts are so important to make money, so do you all just sacrifice feet for contracts? Not that one brand is generally better than the other. Just that some brands are way better for an individual foot than others.

Reading books can be inspriring!! When I started running seriously in 1972 I went to the local library and devoured autobiographies of past runners like Gordon Pirie, Derek Ibbotson, Brian Hewson etc. and the then WR holder for the mile Jim Ryun. I now own many of these books and they still inspire me.(And at my age I need inspiration before a hard session.) There are also good coaching books out there. Books can be read, re read, and seriously considered for an unlimited time. Anything by Percy Cerutty is worth reading Pure coincidence that I now sell books for a living!

Topic music/headphones while running: most of us are already glued to screens and electronic devices the whole day, so why not be with yourself and your thoughts while running? So I don't have music or podcasts while running. Music in a race is for distraction because it is too hard... But we LOVE the grind, so hard = good, so no music to distract us from the lovely and hard grind.

I have never run with music before. Everyone calls me a psycho for that, but I really enjoy the opportunity to be with myself, just listening to my footsteps, my breathing and the sounds of the outdoors. Plus I think it's always better to have more awareness of my surroundings rather than less.
@dprid
@dprid Ай бұрын
Exactly - running is my 'me' time, when I get away from the noise and bustle of everyday life. I'm fortunate to live in an area where I can get quite quickly get into the countryside, so looking at the scenery and wildlife whilst I run is my chance to unwind and get away from the trials and tribulations of the working week. I see way too many runners who appear to be entirely dependent on music, to the point I know several people who will not run if they have no music, even if they've paid to enter!
@edithgruber2125
@edithgruber2125 Ай бұрын
Same, I agree with you all. I'm also in the no music/headphones camp. I only listen to music or watch videos on the treadmill because that is boring. Outside, I prefer hearing the noises of nature on the trails. 2-3 hours fly by and I managed to de-stress. In the city, it's good to be aware of your surroundings.

... I try to read books.., but I have went ahead, and succumbed to the fact that I can do audiobooks quickly, and read one book at home. first time I bleached my hair, I should have done it twice for that exact reason. the second time, I learned from my previous attempt, I di it the night before a rugby match though, an the head coach was not happy.."I dont like surprises" his voice. he knew something was up, because I wore a cap all pregame.. I didn't catch all the heat though, because my buddy in the forward pack also bleached his hair with me (solidarity?) we were kids in university.

The running without distractions thing…i love it & hate it probably in equal measure but i do most of my training alone. I love running with others when i get the chance! I think it was in Moritz U did a short of what goes on in my head on a long run & OMG it was almost an identical insight into my brain on most runs😂 from the sublime, most incredible ideas to the most ridiculous…for me-like who & how did someone come up with X sport. The most gritty details of the most irrelevant stuff. Answers to questions I must know, but are so irrelevant, Google doesn’t even have straight answer (yes, I have come home & googled it, cause I NEEDED an answer🤣🤣). Sometimes I come home & try unsuccessfully to remember what I thought about for the last hour…oh…& as u said in that short Phily ”I must remember to trim those cheese graters in my shoes!!”😂😂😂😂😂 Highly recommend doing some runs without music/podcasts etc if you don’t already. You might just get a real good laugh at yourself like I do (on the regular😂)
