This video is so important. It is so easy to put elite/professional athletes in a box and think that you don't have those thoughts and feelings, and whenever people who are elite in their field are open 'during' their lowest moments (rather than talking about it after they have recovered and are feeling better) it is another powerful vote for the importance of not hiding when we feel less than great. I hope you realise the power of this video; I thought you were fab before and now I think you are even fabber (I know that is not a word but it should be!) ☺

I think Stephen Scullion is a great watch for that, he's elite and feels awful more often than a typical person. I don't mean that its a bad thing, it's inspiring that a person with so many struggles can get this far in a sport.

I was just about to mention Stephen Scullion. I totally respect his transparency on YT. Unfortunately though it's sort of turned me off of watching him. It's a lot to take in, and sometimes I just want mindless fun running content...

Hormones are a shocker when you are not used to your 'natural' cycle. I came off hormonal birth control and have been shocked by my anger, despair and everything in between during my cycle. It has taken quite some time to recognise my emotional and energy level shifts and what I can do holistically to support myself at different points of the month. I do find that the week before my period my energy levels plummet, then I need plenty of carbs to get me through my actual period. Thank you for being so honest and raw, it means the world to us all, believe me.

Phily, your honesty and realness is what keeps bringing me back to your channel. And your quirkiness and sense of fun too. We're all human and it's nice to see all parts of you - thank you for sharing. Also don't underestimate what your cycle and hormones can do to your mood / mind - I get hit pretty hard with it and while I've learned to work it it, it's still a struggle at times.

Hey Phily Amazing video, thank you for displaying the courage to show us behind the curtain. As a psychotherapist, I would particularly like to thank you for normalising these experiences for others, what an incredible service that is to your fellow runners! I'm sure you are already onto this, but when rationalising fails you (what I call "Top-Down" emotional regulation), it can be helpful to flip to "Bottom-Up" emotional regulation, which includes things like grounding exercises, various breathing and imagery methods, progressive muscle relaxation, tapping/EFT etc. Maybe one to discuss with your therapist next time around. Wishing you all the best for the run in to Berlin. I look forward to following your journey, inside and out!

Thank you soooo much for opening up after your run on the eve before the race. It is good to see such relatable feelings/emotions from an elite runner. And that you also have to battle through these things. Best of luck in the last stint of the marathon block towards Berlin (for me is Amsterdam next), wishing you a smooth and good race with a clear and confident head on your shoulders! Keep it up and love the grind!

Hey Philly! First I just wanted to say thank you so much for putting up this content. As a female who has also been through my own journey of mapping out how my menstrual cycle affects running, mood, performance and relationships - I feel super inspired by your transparency and vulnerability because I know it can be super tough to be so open and to so many people. On the positive! I find that whenever I feel things that may or may not be related to the ebbs and flows of being a women, I find it easier to allow myself to ‘flow’ 😅 with the feelings rather then questioning myself and rationalising. Leaning into the feeling with a mentality that this feeling is only temporary and it will pass for negative emotions but also positive emotions is really helpful in helping me get perspective. I know it’s hard as well when you have athletic goals and performances you may want to achieve. I’ve found and observed that lots of athletes (amateur or not) have perfectionistic tendencies that can really help drive excellence. But personally for myself, I find that having a perfectionist mindset has been quite harmful for my mental health especially when as females we naturally have hormones that fluctuate on a day to day and even hour to hour basis! What does help is thinking about precision over perfection. Being precise over the things you have to do on that day and that week and thinking about the things we are in control with has been a mindset that I’ve found really helpful especially when I’m about to start my period and I feel down in the dumps. Hope this helps and super excited to see how amazing you’ll be at Berlin 🫶

And of course, thank you for sharing and being so vulnerable. I’m a guy so speaking with zero knowledge here but I also wonder if some of the emotions are due to your period which I hope not inappropriate but I’m super glad you’re getting one So much more healthy and so happy for you , taking care of your body

Nobody mentioned the cool new colors of the race gear. All matching too. As to the feelings she was feeling... It happens. Some people need help to figure it out and some people don't. Falmouth did teach a really good lesson in that it is possible to feel like that and still do the race. The other lesson was that the monthly emotional cycle can also be dealt with. The unknown is if the monthly physical cycle will effect performance at all. Berlin will be a similar time frame with high expectations. Good luck to you Philly I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you. Hoping for a PB or high finish. Dare we hope for top ten or better?

Awww, you should be so proud of yourself! We're really fortunate that mental health is being prioritized and is finally accepted as a normal part of taking care of yourself. Also, hormones are no joke! There's nothing worse than knowing you're in a bad headspace, funk, or anxious and feeling like you can't do anything to make it better. Sometimes the more you try to "fix" things, the worse they get and the best thing you can do is just accept that you're not having a good day or days, give in, and just go with it. Like ya know what, yup, I don't feel ok, and that's ok. When this happens to me I flat out tell my husband and am like be around me at your own risk bc I'm super cranky, random, etc. lol! Even just saying that out loud to another person can make you feel better sometimes. As always, love the video and hope you enjoy the rest of your training block and time in the USA!

I can very much sympathise with you regarding mental/ physical health being affected by periods. I went off birth control this year for personal reasons and also set myself the goal of running ultra marathon distances by the end of the year. My period can literally wipe out a whole week of training for me, it seriously changes how my body feels, reacts and my energy levels. With the added bonus my making my mental health dive as well and all I can do is wait it out. Then when I feel a little better get myself moving again :)

Tracking the mood changes along the cycle with an app (i use Clue) can be greatly helpful: my personal experience is that some specific days are 90% of the times going to challenge me emotionally more than usual. There are not many medical studies on this as of yet, but I hope my experience can help other people struggle less. I believe hormonal changes like progesterone increase, lowering of LH and so on deeply affect some women's experience of their emotions. Strong mood crashes can happen around the 17th, 19th day, for example. You're not alone in this, Phily, and others going though this 😊

Your brain did not fail you, nor is your body for having injuries and niggles. As you said, everything you felt is valid and it is okay to not be okay and sit in that for a while, but know that you already have all the strength you need to get out of it and feel better again. I know you were speaking honestly and your negativity was coming through in your words, but you have SUCH a strong mind Phily, moreso than so many of us. My husband grew up not too far from Falmouth! He went to high school with Ben True. Maine is a beautiful state.

Got to PB Boulangerie bistro and bakery. It’s near Wellfleet on the Cape and is absolutely worth the drive. The Marconi radio site is one of the most beautiful places I visited on the cape. Weed really helps my mindset. It’s legal in Massachusetts and smoking a bit of preroll and walking on the beach is very enjoyable.

Girl you are up and down atm. Sounds like you’re battling through. There’s sometimes a lot to be said for figuring things out for yourself and coming out the other end. Teaches you good coping mechanisms.
