Before we were married, my husband's mother taught me to crochet. I started with thin thread and a circle of tulle. I had to thread beads and plastic charms onto the thread and crochet a border to make milk jug covers!! Today we have been married for 57 years!!

You really inspire me! In the past week I have made your fabulous windspinners. I am now starting on twirly Christmas tree decorations, thanks to your tutorial. I enjoy your personalised videos, not just a pair of hands with a hook. Other KZbin videos are a great help with ideas, and I have made daisy bands as key rings, and granny squares for a cardigan for my daughter. I have made washcloths, mobile phone bags and pumpkins. My bigger projects are pretty baby blankets using a continuous granny square. If I do other squares, I use your favourite V stitch. Thank you for your friendly personality.

Thank you very much for answering all our questions. I have learned so much through watching your videos. I was happy to hear that boys as well as girls are taught (or given the opportunity to learn) crochet and knitting in Finland. My mum and gran crocheted, and I was intrigued by it. Mum taught me the basic stitches long ago, but I did nothing with it until my late 60s. Now I’ve developed a rather passionate interest in the craft. Thank you for passing on your knowledge!

Thank you for the lovely scenery. Its interesting hearing how others live. My mom taught me to crochet when I i around 8. I wanted to learn knitting, which she hated! She showed me the basics. My first knitted item was a lime green dog sweater with cables! I let my knitting skills lapse for many decades, but I've been a prolific knitter the last yr and love it so much. I've crocheted on and off through adulthood. Now almost always have a hook or needles in my hands. Love your videos! 💙

When my daughter was locked down in Finland when the pandemic struck, although it was stressful not knowing when she could get back to her son, she thoroughly loved her time in Finland and often talks about her time there. She was impressed with the cleanliness of the streets etc. She didn't see any homeless people and she enjoyed riding her borrowed bike to University etc. She said if there was a country other than Australia that she could live in it would be Finland. She even did some crochet while she was there. So many more lovely things about Finland she has told us. We all want to go there one day.

Hi Mrs Tuula, I've watched this video and there are so many interesting questions. We can all learn from each other. And so lovely to see scenery of your country. Just very recently, I read that Finland has been stated to be the most happy country 😊 I have 2 questions : 1) Why does the "granny square" has been called as such? Does it have to do with a stitch that perhaps our grandmother used to do? 2) How come the double and triple crochet do not have a consistent name in USA and UK? Specially for beginners, as myself, it's quite confusing. Thank you so much 😊🤗
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, Finland was selected the happiest country in the world for the 7th time in a row 💜 We all think it's more contentment and safety than actually happiness!! 1. There are several stories about why the granny square has that name and people have started to make them at different times in different countries. So I don't know where it was done first. But it seems to have something to do with the fact that in the past it was mainly older women who crocheted wool, younger women crocheted lace for their hope chest! 2. The two different terminologies certainly are confusing and such a pity they weren't combined at some stage - too late now. I again noticed it especially last week when I made a video about a garland that has long stitches. Double treble in US terms, triple treble in British terms! My tongue got into a knot trying to say the two one after the other! But there is nothing to do but to learn to recognise them apart. The best tip is to remember that only US terms have single crochets - so if "single crochet" is mentioned, then the whole thing is in US terms.

I'm so glad you included my question! And it's such a relief to hear that I'm not the only one who does basically all of her crochet freehand. I'll do the same thing with looking up tutorials of stitches, (that's how I learned the wavy seashell stitch, which is gorgeous,) but once I learn the stitch, I put it to use in my own way.

Bless your heart for answering so many questions❣ Now i have one more more to ask, 🙂: what is your favorite type of yarn? And is it the same yarn for crocheting / knitting a garment? And if you were to crochet shorts ( the shorts are almost like a skirt ) what yarn would be recommended?
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 11 ай бұрын
I mainly use wool for most things. Either 100% wool or merino wool or mixed with other fibres like alpaca. Some of the superwash so they are machine washable. Also use wool that has 15-25% polyester added for strength, like for socks and mittens. For shorts it would depend how they would be worn. If summer shorts worn on bare legs, then I would use cotton, preferably mercerized cotton. Here in the north you also see winter shorts worn over woolly tights (that's a British word, not sure of the American one - pantyhose?), then I would again use wool.

I don't know if you have your email listed in your description I'll check it when I get back from taking my granddaughter to the store. Tell me what you want to order and I will send it to you. I also learned that if you put on there that it's a birthday present or whatever then customs and all of that does it charge you for picking up your package. We had an online baby shower for our friends KZbinrs in Russia and learned this information. Many blessings

I enjoyed this video so much. I love to hear you talk about Finland and your family, and of course, crochet. The questions that were submitted were very thoughtful, and I found that many of them were questions that I had-so thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Do you think you would ever visit the United States? I live in Maryland which has beautiful beaches in the east and lovely mountains in the west. (I don’t care for the summers which are hot and humid.) If you did visit, where do you think you would like to go?

I would like to know the answer to your questions also. I live in CA but have lived in PA and NC and thought each summer the humidity was going to do me in!

It would be great to visit the USA one day. I love big cities so the first place would be New York, not in winter, but there would be lots of places I would like to see.

Where do we ask questions? Right now I'm helping a visually impaired friend. I am still somewhat visually impaired. I spent two years nearly completely blind. The one eye I could see out of was20/200 incorrect able! I have had four surgeries. I used special lighted magnifying goggles.and I still use them. I learned to mark many stitches accordingly. Do you have any hints I haven't thought of? It wasn't till close to the end of my blindness I started crocheting again. I had to learn new ways to live. Crocheting was dead to me. I finally realized it was only dead because I believed it to be. Yes, I stuck with simplier patterns. You should have heard me when I finished my dish towel! Lol crazy.

Wonderful that you have been able to continue to crochet 💗 When I plan the next Q&A video, I will ask people to ask questions in the community tab on this channel. All the best!

Someone gave me a crochet pattern book in Finnish but I don't know the crochet terms, and I find it hard reading instructions of how to make them, so I have a special request: could you do a list of common stitches with translations. I hate the idea of the book going to waste.

Do they use abbreviations in the book? There are several lists online translating crochet terms. Also need to know if it uses US or UK terms in crochet. A recent list is here, made by a group of crochet bloggers: www.ihanoikeablogi.fi/2016/11/virkkaajan-sanakirja.html

Thanks for answering my question. Sorry, your daughters are not interested in crafts. I know how that goes.
