I'm surprised to hear you don't think about upcoming shots. For me, thinking and planning the shot as I approach the ball (I walk normally) gives me calming vibes because I am looking for the safest, easiest way to the green. If I try to lock in as I get to the ball I tend to choke!

That sentiment works well when you're in position or playing well. Personally, I like to be distracted. I only have so much mental fortitude. Once it's used up, I struggle to make good decisions. By being distracted, I don't use any of that.

It's whatever works for the individual. You can't be intense and switched on for 18 holes or you will get mentally drained.
