yes, i AM Japanese (born and grew up in). i think she sounded natural because her word choise was quite different from most foreigners trying to learn japanese. no offence but most of americans' accent usually sound really forein however hard they try. so, to me,she definitely didn't sound like a bignner and that impressed me. i mean, of course, i woun't say she is perfectly fluent but i think she's got one of the hardest part - the balance of politeness - which a lot of foreigners usually cannot get over no matter how hard they try JUST RIGHT. also, i don't get the point of your asking if im a real japanese. why did you have to interrupt when someone gave a complimet to someone else? why can't you be happy with others' happiness? im not a native english speaker so i might sound rude saying this and i might be saying this in a wrong way but i just don't undersatd why you had to actually comment and say you don't think she is as good... the only guess i came up with was that you are also learning japanese and you are jealous of her :P jk anyway, i hope you are not offended and sorry for the long relpy.

Derhek Ok mister. She never said I was fluent nor even really commented on my grammar or vocab, she stated quite clearly that she liked how I sounded and how polite my speech was. Now get over it, you want to hear that you have a better level than I do? If you weren't that bitter and envious, you'd know that it's perfectly common in all languages, to encourage and tell beginners that they're doing good when it's actually the case! I can speak German, English, Turkish, French, Korean and a bit Mandarin. German and Turkish are both my mother tongue because I grew up in Germany and in a Turkish household. Since first grade I have been studying English so I'm on an advanced level in English. I chose French as an elective subject in 2011 so I'm able to understand and speak good French (at the end of this year I'll hopefully be A-level) I've been studying Korean for about 4 months now and I actually learn really fast! I can read Hangul without a problem and my grammar and vocabulary is increasing as well! I'm thinking about starting with Mandarin Chinese next year because I really like the sound of the language and the Chinese culture. At first I wanted to learn Cantonese but that was a bit too hard for me because of the high amount of tones. My dream is to become fluent in many langauges ^^

Actually, before starting to study Korean, I studied Japanese for a short time. I was able to read Hiragana and some Kanji but I forget everything :( I still remember some words and some Hiragana but that's all. Though I still understand some Japanese as in basic conversations such as "How are you? What's your name?" and stuff like that xD

it's so funny, really, when I studied languages (french, russian, english) in school, I absolutely hate it due to the pressure of getting good grades. now that I'm out of school, or at least free of the pressure to succeed in the language, I'm so eager to learn more and more and do everything to not fall back. A couple weeks ago I picked up a book about korean and I love watching korean dramas, so that's my next big goal, besides learning french. (I can only speak a little. But I can order a sandwich in a restaurant! :D )

It's so great to see other people my age being so obsessed and fascinated with languages. I speak 5 languages (German mother tongue, English, French, Spanish and Dutch) and I've been trying to get to learn Japanese for years now. I also studied 6 years Latin which was really helpful to understand much about words' origins and linguistic structures here in Europe. There are charts out there saying these languages are easy to learn, those are difficult. I think it depends much on where a person is from and in which language he/she was raised. Out of those I speak, French is the hardest for me because it's all about distinguishing little sounds as well as understanding the context of the words. But I love French :)

I really don't know why, but I had the impression that people who could speak French would find it easy to get the hang of German pronunciation. I still struggle with those round vowels like ü and ö because they definitely don't exist in my mother tongue, which is Portuguese. Whenever I watch videos on how to learn French, or German for that matter, especially on pronunciation, there comes a point in which I have take a break so that my lips and the muscles around my mouth can get some rest. I really hope it'll get easier and I will finally be able to make those sounds with ease.

C'est dingue comme l'anglais peut prendre le dessus sur le français... il y'a tellement de mots, d'expressions ou tournures de phrases qui me viennent in english first, et très souvent je ne sais même pas comment les traduire en français. alors que c'est ma langue maternelle ! So much respect for you! And don't worry about not being fluent in every language you speak, you learn through practice and persistance! And you probably already speak more languages than the average person :) Oh and it's so praiseworthy how well you speak Japanese! (Or at least it sounds really good to me, but yeah I don't speak a single word of Japanese ;D) I aspire to learn more languages as well since I'm so passionate about them! In fact, French is one of the languages I really want to master because it sounds so beautiful ;3 Currently I am learning Finnish because my best friend is a Finn, and so far I can speak English, Dutch (native language) and a good amount of German (but definitely not fluent either!). Korean's a good start since it's actually very easy - the only confusing part is the sentence structure and that some words are pronounced the same but mean completely different things depending on the context. Good luck!

It's all about going through the same process as you went through when you were a child. I kind of explain this in a video but, to make it simple, you have to work on two completely separate things while learning languages, one is the absorption of data (films, music, reading, etc) without paying much attention on what's being said, only getting used to the sounds, the letters, the intonation, etc. The second thing is the the actual study of the language, the grammar, the pronunciation, etc. It's about finding a balance between the active and the passive parts of your study. If you're studying spanish, first listen to the musicality of the language , that's the most important thing: ) good luck

Then at age 14 I learned English and at age 16 I learned German! I could choose to learn Spanish when I was 17. Now I'm 19 and I'm so glad that the schools in Belgium offer all those languages! I speak English and German and I've always wanted to learn those two and also French, Japanese, Italian and Hebrew. :D But it's sooo cool that you speak four languages and all four of them are languages I'm super interested in. Also - I think in English and the same thing happens to me. :D My native language is Bulgarian and I remember the first times when the use of English or English-like phrases intensified like crazy. :D And now that I'm immersed with German it sort of happens with German as well. But I still think in English. I don't think that would ever change, since I entertain myself in English... I have the power to think in German though; i just have to kind of remind myself to do it if I want to. :) It's weird. It's really weird. I think it's simply amazing the fact that you're so young and you already speak four languages. My dream, just like yours, is to speak several languages and to have the chance to learn about the different cultures that are surrounded by each one of them. Once I get a great level in English I hope to have the chance to learn French, I think is an elegant and beautiful language, unfortunately there are few institutions to study this language, so maybe one day I'll go to France and learn in the propper way. Hi, I love how open mided you are in many videos so I felt I could tell you this because you will listen with an open mind. I'm Indian American and Hindu, and the bindi made me uncomfortable because I thought you were wearing it as a trend - especially b/c it has a Hindu religious context and it was worn here with Christian cross earrings. After you told us you base a lot of your life on jainism, it made more sense to me. Maybe your point is that you integrate many religions into your views - like Hinduism, Jainism, and Christianity. However, next time, I wish you would explain that in the video, to educate followers who don't know much about it. Viewers who don't know much about the bindi might wear my culture as a trend. (But, If I wore a bindi to work, I might lose my job because it's not "professional" and I haven't "integrated", I'm too "traditional".) It's so exhausting to be a minority trying to educate the public about how to respectfully engage in our culture, so I would LOVE if you could help ♡♡ thank you !

Hi - thanks for being willing to discuss. This is my opinion. I know many Indians have different opinions on this, and each one is valid. Yes. For me, it's annoying when people use Indian culture as a costume without even wanting to understand. That shows me you don't care about my culture, and you only want to use it for your benefit. It also matters who is doing it. If it's someone who has historically had power over Indians, it's worse. Not knowing that you were doing that that is one thing. But, if I tell you that your hipster store of hindu gods and goddesses is disrespectful, and you don't care - it hurts. This isn't just about me either. In the US, there are so many Indian Americans who make up the culture. Why aren't we reflected in our media, in our TV shows? Part of that is because Indians are not given voice - only white people who use Indian trends are. Yoga isn't cool until a white hipster crowd picks it up. Saris aren't cool till a white Instagram star posts a picture with one. Sure, on their own, it doesn't seem like a big deal. The point is, cultural appropriation is part of this bigger issue of silencing Indian voices. That needs to change, and that starts with talking to Indians about their culture. I'm curious what you think. Could you share as well? Also, XxxMuseluverxxX​ , anything to add? You don't know how much I appreciate having allies like you in this.

I'm from Germany and even for me German is confusing sometimes. :D Obviously I speak German, then I speak almost fluent English, I can speak French as well and I will improve it by doing a 3 month exchange to France in August and the last language I'm learning is Spanish. I always tend to mix up Spanish and French because some things are so similar. That's really confusing. I really want to learn Swedish later.

Awe, I love your accent when you're speaking English. Great job. I am learning Russian right now, and I did a little French a few years ago. I am going to learn Spanish, French, and German too. So do you confuse words in your head with all your languages? I will be thinking Russian (since that is the first language I am working on), and Spanish pops in haha. Hopefully, French will be easy I love it. How you feel about Russian is how I feel about Russian and French. I have friends to work on Russian with, and Spanish is always useful as a second language here. I honestly should work on spanish first, but I like Russian better.

Oh, god... You are the first person that feels the same way I feel with English! I'm from Spain and I've been fluent in English since I was 14-15. (I'm 21 now) I dream and think in English too and when I'm speaking or writing Spanish I think the words and sentences in English first and you're right, it's kind of weird. XD I can understand French as well and Italian and I am currently learning Russian! I highly recommend you learning Russian because it is BEAUTIFUL. For me, it was the hardest language to learn, but definitely worth it! ;) I'm about to start learning German and Irish as well because, I don't know why, but I love them! I love the sound and the grammar and the different words... Maybe we're crazy about languages, but you are the first person I know of that loves languages as much as I do and I love that! :D

As a native French speaker who learned both English and Spanish, I'd say it is common for any native language speaker :) According to me, native speakers always seem talking extremely fast when you're learning a language. I guess it's a matter of getting used to the language you're learning haha

going on early hip French movies it seems the French language is zippy and at times very compressed. so yes I think it is normal for the French people to be speaking this way. it makes it more difficult if your ears aren't....trained....... to that type of listening but it is certainly a wonder to hear. I actually prefer the more guttural French speakers. this highly educated parlance has no real meat to it. but it is still lovely none the less. x

Hi, you definitely speak better Japanese than I did at your age! You need to work on sounds like the 語 in 日本語, and your はじめまして sounded like あじめまして, etc. You just need to do some more fine-tuning. Your English accent is a curious mix of accents (definitely not Aussie as someone suggested, lol). You need to re-learn pronunciation of words such as "abroad", "level", "books" and "world"; they could simply be bad habits picked up from learning words in your reading more than from reading with listening. We all have that problem! I'm studying Chinese, too. Try Michel Thomas Mandarin for your tones. Good luck with everything you're doing. Cheers

Ha - we have 3 languages in common, though you are definitely better at them than I am. I'm Canadian, so that covers the French and English, but I live on the West coast so various Asian languages are used more than French, so I spent quite a few years learning Japanese as well. The closest I've ever been to fluent in a language other than my first, was Japanese. I has been so long since I've had a French lesson, but I'm trying to pick it back up. French and Spanish are obviously related as idioms of Latin origin. Both are equally difficult to master I'd say, and you'll have plenty of superb litterature to discover in either case. Up to you to see if you plan to travel to South America & see Macchu Picchu and enjoy speaking with the locals, or if you're more tempted by a deep dive in the dark corners of Paris, Brussels... On a purely "practical" way, Spanish may cover more ground/countries. And if you go to Italy, both languages will help you in a funny way (some hits & misses, a few gestures with the hands, and "voilà" :)

Pour améliorer l'anglais je te conseille personnellement de regarder le plus de séries possible en VO, commence en STFR (sous-titre français) puis STEN quand tu t'en sens la force (ou que c'est vraiment facile à comprendre ou pas trop rapide) puis finalement retire les, perso j'ai commencé y a deux ans, je regarde parfois sans sous-titre même si je ne comprends pas absolument tout, mais je suis devenu fluide, en grande partie après avoir passé un an dans un pays étranger plus ou moins anglophone. Et jouer à des jeux vidéos avec des anglophones m'a également aidé, tout comme jouer en anglais tout court. :)

ella I don't know if this will really help, but I'm french, and what helped me a lot with english vocabulary was watching videos in english (even with subtitles) :) So I watched a lot of TV shows and youtube videos and I feel like it helped me a lot, but I think it's easier for me to find english videos than french ones... ella Well, I don't watch a lot of french movies and TV shows, but I've heard that the movie "LOL" is great (they made a USA version that was horrible, so watch the french one), and the tv show "Profilage" is pretty good (if you like that type of shows) :) Also, there's a mini-serie on youtube called "le visiteur du futur", and apparently it's really funny, and I know there are english subtitles :) And I think that most of Cyprien's videos are with subtitles (he's a very famous french youtuber) :) I don't if you'll like it, but I also like american & british movies better so I'm not the best at suggesting french movies, you'll judge by yourself ;)

I only speak English and Spanish and I am currently studying French. Its is truly such a beautiful language. And I have to say, don't even worry about your accent. It is absolutely lovely. I know there are some people who have annoying accents and try really hard to get rid of them but your accent is so pleasant to hear and very unique. I love it :)

Amazing! I have known French, Spanish, Italian people who have lived in the US for decades, yet can't speak English as well as you do. I have students from all over the world, they are improving their spoken English using Spoken English-2020 software and can speak fairly well in a couple of months. But it is really surprising that you learned (learnt BrE) English on your own. You are definitely talented. And that Japanese and Korean, OMG! Unbelievable. Just a little change in the syllable stresses/word stress, and no one can tell that English is not your first language. But I would prefer that you retain slight French accent, it is cute.

La verdad es que no sé explicar por qué se pone la "a" delante de algunas frases, pero sí sé que "María le gustan los perros" no tiene sentido y suena bastante mal; lo correcto es "A María le gustan los perros", "A Pablo no le gusta bailar". Sobre las palabras para chicos y chicas, o sea que tengan femenino y masculino y dependiendo de eso tengas que adaptar los adjetivos y el artículo (el, la, los, las o un, una, unos, unas, etc); una "norma general", que no siempre es así, es que si la palabra termina en "-a" suele ser femenina, por ejemplo, "gaviota": "la gaviota", "las gaviotas", "una gaviota". Y si termina en "-o" suele ser masculina, por ejemplo, "espejo": "el espejo", "ese espejo". También las que teminan en "-e" como "aterrizaje", "contaje", "garaje" o "despegue" son masculinas: "el garaje", "varios aterrizajes", "un despegue". Hay muchas excepciones, como la palabra "acción", que termina en "-on" pero sin embargo se dice "la acción" y no "el acción". De hecho, creo que todas, o casi todas, las palabras que terminan en "-ión" son femeninas: relajación, pronunciación, convención, construcción,... Otra excepción serían "agua" o "hacha", que a pesar de seguir siendo femeninas, se dice "EL agua" o "UN hacha", para evitar la cacofonía. Pero normalmente, si terminan en "-o" y en "-e" son masculinas, y si terminan en "-a" femeninas. Esa suele ser una regla básica para poder intuir si la palabra es masculina o femenina. En "-u" y en "-i" creo que no hay muchas palabras que terminen por esas dos letras. Ahora mismo solo se me ocurren "espíritu", "kiwi" y "pedigrí", todas ellas masculinas. El español es bastante simple a la hora de escribirlo y pronunciarlo. Tenemos solo cinco vocales, gráficas y fonéticas: a, e, i, o, u. A diferencia del inglés que tiene 12 vocales fonéticas (cinco gráficas). Lo más "difícil" en español sería: - Las erres fuertes. - Las jotas también fuertecitas. - Las zetas (solo si vas a aprender el acento de España, pero es el mismo sonido que la "th" del inglés en "think" o "thermal" así que no tendrás ningún problema). - Las conjugaciones verbales, pero suelen tener un patrón común por cada grupo de verbos acabados en "-ar", "-er" o "-ir". Y en principio ya está, el resto es bastante facilito. - Lo único recuerda que en español no existe la "v", y se lee exactamente igual que la "b" ("vaya" y "baya" se leen exactamente igual aunque sean palabras distintas). - Tampoco existe el sonido de la "z" inglesa. Todas las "s" son normales, sin vibración. - La "h" es siempre muda (silent), como en "hour", "honour", "honest" o "heir". - Y las consonantes explosivas inglesas tampoco existen. Las "b", "p", "k", "g", "t", "d", etc, son suaves, nunca tan fuertes como en inglés.

Not really. Once you learn a new language if you really put a lot of effort into it then you will start thinking and even dreaming in that language. I am a native spanish speaker and I can relate to this since I probably think in english more than half of the time. Dreaming in english is not as frequent though, but still happens once in a while.

Luis Pérez is that because english is the dominant language and its everywhere? im learning french but i would never think in french 'cause it just not natural..english is so much easier. But then again, english is my native language.

I think it's because your brain uses your new language as a new way of processing information, and once your brain gets used to a new language it will come out naturally.

***** It's interesting to hear a perspective from someone who did not do this/learn English. Immersion in another language is hard when English is the dominating language and culture (media) - and you are not in the particular region/country. I gave up learning French for now because of this. Not only do I have to go to a French speaking region/country to learn, I have to go to francophone area, away from English influence.

You have so many english accents lol it's funny! French & English are my mother tongues, and I learned growing up fortunately so I didn't really have to study, lol, I live in France, and honestly, I have so many friends that have studied English and Japanese basically since 4 or 5 years of age, and they don't speak as fluidly as you. As someone that speaks three fluent languages myself, I'm learning my fourth which is Korean, and my third was Dutch, and Korean is a looooooooottt easier than Dutch. But since you've never left France, that's super cool, I've lived in the USA, France, and the Netherlands in order to get my native fluency levels. How did you do it?! I feel like Asian languages (not including Mandarin), once you get the hang of it, are not so bad. But I guess I'll see how good I am when I do a semester in Seoul next year! Dutch, I must say, was the most complicated for me, and I had to study it for a good three years (and I mean religiously, everyday) before becoming fluent, I can't imagine the determination it takes for German! Your Korean is good, :)

Nederlands is gemakkelijk ! :D Ik studeer in Vlaanderen maar ik ben Franstalig, ik kan nu goed mijn leraren begrijpen maar mijn vrienden... nog niet :D ze gebruiken zoveel woordjes en met zo'n plat Nederlands... haha ja makkelijk te leren, volgens mij, maar moeilijker te begrijpen !!

Je suis juste tombée en amour avec ton accent anglais haha! Je suis française j'habite en Martinique, et même si je n'ai que 16 ans je me débrouille pas mal en anglais, et en fait, je crois bien que j'ai exactement le même accent que toi! C'est bien de parler des langues, mais l'accent est très important. On peut parler une langue couramment et ne pas réussir à se faire comprendre par les gens parce que l'intonation est mauvaise. C'est le gros problème du japonais. Quand tu parles, on devine, donc on comprends, mais par exemple "Ajimarimashita" ça ne veut rien dire. "HAjimarimashita", si. C'est d'ailleurs pour ça que les japonais ont beaucoup de mal avec les langues étrangères, parce que leur accent est trop fort. Ils sont parfaitement incapables de prononcer correctement le son "rrr", ou encore le "l", puisque ces deux sons ont la même prononciation chez eux. Du coup, en général ils parlent très bien, mais on ne comprend rien. En français nous n'avons pas ce problème de diphtongues et de phonème, cela nous est donc plus facile de reproduire plusieurs langues parfaitement! Il faut vraiment avoir conscience de cette chance et la mettre à profit le plus possible.

Just for you to know - a fortnight ago I started learning french and it seems hard initially, but i hope I will get any results soon. Je suis totalement impressionnée! Tu as une maîtrise des langues incroyable! Je parle Français puisque je suis française et j'essaye de me perfectionner en anglais! J'étudie l'espagnol et l'italien au lycée mais j'ai du mal avec ces deux langues.. J'adorerais apprendre à parler le japonais! Je me suis beaucoup reconnue quand tu parlais de l'anglais parce que moi aussi ça m'arrive de penser en anglais ou de balancer des expressions anglaises en plein milieu d'une conversation française, et JADORE CA! Your Japanese is really good! My native language is English, I took French in middle school/high school for 7 years but have forgotten most of it, and I'm teaching myself Japanese now. I actually find kanji learning fairly easy and it really helps when I learn new vocab or grammar, because I can picture the kanji in my head and it cements my memory of both the character and the readings/meanings.
