Bulbmin are immune to anything the normal Pikmin are immune to and they only appear if you have a certain amount of space in your group. They essentially function as the "you lost several things and/or you don't have the thing you need, so take these" aspect to the game. If you're lacking in numbers, or having problem with a specific hazard, then they appear so that you can keep going through the cave without having to stop and restart it. This also the reason they can't follow you out, since they are unnecessary outside of caves.

@@dnta602 Yes and no. The Water Wraith dungeon is actually impossible without Bulbmin. Since it has all the hazards, but you can only take Blues inside. So it's also a bit of a challenge enabler. They're stupidly strong but they have the crux of never leaving the cave you found them in without converting them to Purple or White.

Just like the last dungeon in Pikmin 3, with how I call it, is just the Plasm Wraith boss fight. Yes it has an official name for the area. But you could literally call it "Springfield Bonanza" or some other nonsensical word phrase and the dungeon itself doesn't change the gimmick of what it is. And sure, you say you can do it without bulbmin. I say you can't. That's a player preference as well.

I personally really like how hard Pikmin 2 can get. Not because I enjoy difficulty, but rather because it's actually rather fair given that there is no permanent way to lose in the game. About the bulbmin. Their gimmick is while they can't escape from caves and can only be found on specific caves, they are immune to every hazard besides explosions and getting crushed. They can even be thrown into candypop buds to turn them into pikmin you can keep so that's nice

So this is actually my favorite Pikmin game just for the enemy variety. In addition to your typical bulborbs, snagrets and blowhogs, you get bugs that drop bombs from above, waddly sniper things, larva that shoots rocks that may or may not home on you, enemies that specifically target your captain, and of course, who could ever forget the terror that was wandering enemies. You'd just be wandering around, minding your own business, until you randomly see your pikmin count go down. You quickly swap to your other captain, only to see a GIANT BULBEAR munching on your reserves like it's a friday night buffet. You quickly take it down, and continue on. But what's that? There's a clear circle above the bulbear's corpse. and... is that a sliver? "Must be nothing", you say to yourself, and you swap back and keep doing what you were doing. Eventually, you need some of your reserves, so you swap back, only to find that that little circle above your enemy's corpse is now 3/4s full. Panicking, you rally your pikmin to it to try and carry it back, it moves agonizingly slowly. You see your pod, but it's almost fully healed. Just before you manage to get rid of it, it stands back up. The pikmin carrying it valiantly start attacking it, but they were no match for the bulbear. You rally the remainder of your force, hitting it with everything you got, begging for this beast to finally go down. After an intense fight, and a dozen more pikmin dead, the beast lets out it's final howl and falls, and you carry the beast's corpse to your pod to be rid of it once and for all... yes, Pikmin 2 is my favorite. The combination of challenging and varied enemies and the clever, dungeon-like design of the caves was really fun to experience. Honestly, if I had 1 complaint about Pikmin 3, it was the utter lack of enemy variety. Still had by far and away the best boss fights in the series though.

People have already mentioned about the Bulbmin being immune to hazards and a way to replenish your Pikmin supply in dungeons, but there's also another way to get more Pikmin in a dungeon. Queen Candypop Buds will give you ten new Pikmin of whatever color their spots are when you throw one in, and they appear more often than Bulbmin typically do.
