The reason the dead queens where not moved out was probably that they were feeding them to the larvae, they wanted to not wast any food available

Yeah that sounds correct 🤔

Messor Barbarus can drown in droplets too. They just can't handle water very well except for drinking it. for the cockroach nimphs just remove the head and cut up the roach. Gives easy access to the meat.
@AntHolleufer

Yeah that’s how it is 😕 but yeah will definitely cut it next time (and I have already done so😄)

Monogyne species often have multiple queens when founding a colony. This increases their survival rate a lot. And the last standing queen is the strongest. So the colony most likely end up with better genes.

Next time you find "drowned" ants don't give up on them but place them on some tissue to dry them out. They might just come back to life as ants can survive in water for quite a while. ;)

how I feed roaches to my colonies is by removing the head, then cutting the roach in half right where the legs end, then placing the two halves into the outworld
@AntHolleufer

Yeah I will also start to do that. Thank you for sharing 🙌🏻😄

Yes I knew this would happen, I've tried a Lasius Niger colony with 26 queen's and only 1 survived. Also, the workers don't kill the queen's, the queen's actually fight each other because I've actually seen it happen in person.
@AntHolleufer
@AntHolleufer 3 жыл бұрын
Oh thank you for sharing that. That may well be what happen here 🤔

I like how they decorated the inside of the nest, they have also clogged the holes to the mesh for better hydration they where using the dead queens to feed the larvae, thats why they kept the dead bodies for longer I'm very curious about the next Lasius experiment! It sounds very nice for next time, you can cut the roach in half :) I often cut them in 3 pieces, head, upper body and butt XD

Long brilliant comment as always 🤩😄 and yeah didn’t take long before I was told to cut the roach a few more times 😅 thank you sharing tho 😄

What i noticed is that they often move Larvae that are going to transform to a dryer area a few days before they start spinning their Cocoons. But not always.
@AntHolleufer
@AntHolleufer 3 жыл бұрын
That’s that’s also what I have thought. They have started doing this a little today. So I think the nest is just a bit to big for them in the video 🤔☺️ thank you for sharing ☺️

Even though the other colonies are dead im glad this one survived because i think it will be good to look at as its own individual colony.

@EstheticAnts
@EstheticAnts 3 жыл бұрын
Sad but expected. Do you have an estimate how many workers that colony has? I guess 50 but it's so interesting that they only use 1 chamber. You can hydrate the nest a little more I think, not sure.
@AntHolleufer
@AntHolleufer 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm think I hydrate it once a week which I feel is to often 😅 maybe I should do it some more 🤔 but yeah 50-60 workers I think 🤔

On the roach bit. I only feed adults (mostly camponotus) I cut the head, and cut their legs afterwards. Easy to do when you press the roach against the ground. Awesome vid man!

I have also found that with L.Niger if they have access to a sandy sustraight in the outworld, they always take some into the nest..... don't ask me why! Also don't worry about the amount of eggs, as any eggs is a plus ♡ in keeping up the numbers. Nice filming btw.
@AntHolleufer
@AntHolleufer 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah idk why they do it either but I guess it helps them feel safe maybe 🤷🏻‍♂️ but yeah I’m Not to worried about the eggs here and now as I’m maybe not able to see it all either way 🤔 and thank you ❤️😄

Well depending on the size feed then once a week. And they hibernate from October to March. But I’d say search on KZbin and see what comes up. I don’t have the species my self so can’t say anything for sure

this is about feeding the ants i would recommend cutting the cockroach's abdomen not its head because the brain of the cockroach is located where the abdomen is and you will save the ants time in processing food. i think it's best that you give this small ant colony smaller-sized foods but in good amounts since a roach that size can be intimidating for ants so they wont bother with it. You've come a very long way in ant keeping well done!

Different ants got different diet . Polyrachis here in Malaysia is damn tricky . Don't take meal worm or ant food or certain things except for honey , crickets and dubia roaches. Maybe you try feeding it different food ,it will succeed.
