I attended a secret session for the Lover album, and during the part in Cornelia Street where it sounded like Taylor was about to cry, I actually did start tearing up and it turns out Taylor was staring at me the whole time, so when I looked up, she was staring right at me and gave a sweet smile when she saw that even I was getting emotional with the song. Truly an unforgettable moment. :' )

Cut to the bone = She kept thinking all Summer that he would break her heart, that is why it's a "cruel Summer" with you. They were having something with no strings attached, and she fell in love, and she was terrified of saying it, and of losing him. Of him leaving her. Which is then explored in Cornelia Street, where she thought he was "playing her" like the others, and got her things and ran, and then he called her before she "got to the tunnel" and she went back and they finally talked about their relationship and cemented it into something committed :) Basically cruel summer is about the best and worst of times. She was having the most fun of her life and being the happiest, while also being the most terrified, and feeling guilty for having feelings, and feeling like her feelings would ruin everything, and having anxiety all summer long over when 'summer would end" and "real life" would start again and she would be alone. It's basically comparing their love to a "summer love" and how in the end it pushed through and became a real thing against all odds, and all of their personal convictions on relationships :D

As much as I absolutely adore folklore and evermore, I’m kinda sad that Lover never really got it’s day in the sun. For me, it’s the quintessential summer album and I wish we got more singles from it. It also reminds me of so many good memories from summer 2019 so it holds a special place in my heart. Death By A Thousand Cuts is up there with All Too Well and Out of the Woods in terms of my fave bridges of all time 🙌🏽

Thank you for the reaction! Lover is the album that is the most mixed for me of Taylor’s recent work. The only single I liked was the title track. I think she sort of stumbled in thinking that public mood wanted something this upbeat in 2019 (thus putting ME! out as a lead single) when really it was when like Billie Eilish was what was smashing. That said, Death By a Thousand Cuts was one of my favorite songs from her. Afterglow is also pretty high up there for me. It would be cool to see you react to Can’t Stop Loving You which is from the same live lounge session and is a Phil Collins over. Her Riptide cover from the 1989 era is also just chef kiss and should be appreciated.

It was a cruel summer bc she was with someone else when she met him. But she was with him as soon as she got out of that unreal relationship and now she’s happy. “I love you ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard” is directed at the guy she likes having to hear her say that to someone else.
