@@liliesstarlight Girl also is super heavy on sources and research - antithesis of 'essayists' that just make claims with zero evidence. Plus her essays are more... not sure how to say this... but I walk away usually feeling like the topic is more complex than I would've assumed and I have no new strong negative convictions. Never feel like I've been preached to.

@@KOTEBANAROT Hbomberguy and early “BreadTube” (sorry) creators must have a high subscriber click through rate. Their audience don’t mind waiting 1 year for a 3-hr documentary. For me D'angelo may speak about drama in the sense that so much worth commenting on tends to be dramatic in some way, but what's different about him is his ability to break it down, strip it of the sensationalism social media tends to add to it and then deliver it in a calm, rational and relatable way so that situations aren't outshined by the celebrity around them and we start viewing the humanity in the problem and the real life consequences or lack thereof. Critical thinking and common sense are things we don't really see anymore in the 'typical' drama channels so I appreciate a person who will call a spade a spade without bias or fear of uncomfortable truths.

12 minutes in. Academic here! Fields such as Media Studies, Folkloristics, and Cultural Anthropology are catching up with the online world (most academics are terminally online as well). At least the Chicago Manual of Style has begun incorporating online/social media post formats as primary resources. I cited memes in my dissertation in folklore studies, it can be done! There are free quick citation guides provided by different institutions that are updated yearly. I personally love using select KZbin videos in class along with podcasts as supplementary materials to reading. Each of these has to be carefully selected, vetted, and their bibliography checked. It can be done and provides fresh lively discussions. I know quite a few people who use HBomber and PhilpsophyTube when teaching at a university level! :) Loving this video btw!

One quick comment about the academia comment: we don't look down on the Internet! there are many, many parts of academia actively looking at the internet, and we have been for just as long as the Internet has existed. the popularity of older academics (who focus more on their area of expertise, ie typically older topics) and the time it takes reference styles to update can make it seem like academia looks down on the Internet, but I cannot emphasize how much that is NOT the case. it also just takes a second for people who want to talk about newer topics to get through the peer review process. there are academic articles about video essays that were written over a decade ago!

17:30 I wouldn't consider Smosh in that same category as "content farmers" -- they are entertainers, and they come up with skits and faux-games to entertain people. The three essayists are a mix of entertainment and actual education -- I wouldn't consider Smosh to be competing with or parasitic with essayists.
@janewaysmom
@janewaysmom Ай бұрын
I agree. I would consider content farms in this type of question to be like iilluminatii used to be, or similar types of commentary channels. Going to their answers, I only really knew iilluminatii in that type of video, because I'm a big fan of video essays, and when I suggested my friend to watch a video essay after she told me about iilluminatii, my friend said it was too long and she didn't feel like watching it, so at least between myself and that friend, they're exactly right.

@bisma1352 Ай бұрын
Well Spencer is a bigger athourity on it than us as he's involved in producing it. I think he's right because content farm isn't a negative thing unless you give it that association. They do make frequently producable, reproducable shows, unscripted content without many props needed on pit. The quality comes from the amazing staff they hired. I feel they're like a good tv show while the 3 essayists are making movies. Both are great entertainment in their own right and have the same retention of audience because we trust the creators. As for content farms being necessarily in the essayists lane, i think that's only one genre of content farms while Spencer probably compared to content house content
@WeebishSwed
@WeebishSwed Ай бұрын
@@janewaysmomilluminaughti was probably content farm-lite, mostly cuz she still (sadly) knew the writers of her videos. I am not exactly sure what the definition of a content farm is though, and it does very much seems she made her videos just for money.

Sometimes it’s drama but cultural analysis and politics is not drama and calling out crimes (like the Cody ko or Shane Dawson videos), or talking about TV and video games, isn’t drama. So I don’t think they’re drama channels, but sometimes they cover “drama”

I’m a student at Oxford University and honestly believe KZbin video essays are one of the most effective tools for learning. The combination of aural input, visual stimuli, subtitles (if you want them), and narrative result in a remarkably high amount of memory retention from the perspective of the person watching. In Oxford my friends are always impressed by how much I know about a wide breadth of topics - some of them relevant and some of them irrelevant to my own research focus. Also, video essays are obviously not by default reliable sources, but people do seem more cognisant of that fact than any kind of written research or news article. Those can be full of BS but just because it’s written in an academic font you should believe it? Even a lot of peer-reviewed studies thrown around on the internet (including KZbin video essays) all the time just cite a single study with a limited sample size. People, including myself, are simply not trained to be able to read between the lines to the extent necessary in modern society. I know enough about it only to say that I don’t know enough; we should always remain skeptical.

I had this thought weeks ago, questioning if it’s “ethical” to use their video for education content. I followed Mina Le, oliviasun, Shanspeare(and the other videos I find interesting) and I wouldn’t be surprised if these people helped me formed thoughts in clear and accurate as possible for the half of decade using KZbin(and using English in this platform all the time)

Fun fact about Inferno, its basically the foundation of Modern Italian. You can read it in Italian today and understand it (if you speak Italian) and I know because Ive done it. If your essay has no thesis or conclusion, than it's commentary and/or drama, which should be a more neutral statement. I will say though that it is frustrating from a viewer's perspective to have videos that advertise themselves as essays but aren't. Genuine, well-researched essays can be hard to come by

the "writing the script versus _speaking_ the script" section is so interesting to me as a creative writer, because one of the exercises we're commonly taught is to read our dialogue out loud precisely _because_ doing so helps us determine if it actually makes sense or sounds good. like, in hindsight, of COURSE essayists would have the exact same problem and solution, but i'd never thought about it until now and it's just fascinating the heck out of me, the way we can write something and then hear it back and go "what the fuck?" :D
