How Anti-Lag Works - Ignition Delay ALS Turbo Lag
Hyundai Veloster N Review - • 2019 Hyundai Veloster ...

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N not only crackles, snaps, and pops as you shift through the gears, it's also doing something very useful: keeping the turbocharger spooled up. Yes, the Veloster N, when operating in "N" mode, does in fact have an anti-lag system. The ALS works through ignition delay to ensure the turbo maintains boost when you lift off the throttle. The ignition delay allows for combustion to occur partially within the exhaust manifold, which is why you hear pops from the exhaust.
The hot hatch features a 2.0L turbo with up to 275 horsepower (base 250 HP) and 260 lb-ft of torque. The car features an electronically controlled suspension with various damping settings, and with the performance package you get an electronic limited slip differential, a variable induction system, performance summer tires developed specifically with Hyundai, and of course the anti-lag system! Check out the video for all about how it works!

Engineering Explained can you do a video on whether or not fuel is sent into the cylinder while coasting in gear, off the throttle. And if so, how much fuel? I can’t find a clear, decisive answer. Thanks!! Love the videos.

Engineering Explained I made a HHO discovery a couple of days ago. It has a much more efficient use of electricity. Saving fuel for all whom want to try it. The parts needed are two HHO cells wet or dry. Tubing, robust electrical connections, extra car battery is optional, flash arrestor, bubbler If you want to do a video on it? Then let me know, as I live near Preston.

As you say at the end, cool that they have done it in a production car with a warranty. Having been involved in rallying, antilag isn't a new concept, but a rally car isn't under a new car warranty and can have a new turbo fitted every event as required. Cool tech for a road car and a brave move by Hyundai.

This antilag system sounds a lot less aggressive than others, I'm sure the engineers took extra wear into account. Doesn't quite sound like gunfire like aftermarket setups do

Fernde09 this also has to do this it being a production vehicle and having to pass epa regulations. Most vehicles that have an anti lag system installed are most likely decatted with maybe a secondary cat based on emissions in their area.

alex zoidberg engineers had surely been concerned with the material selection for manifold, turbine housing and wheel, and the degrees after TDC are not the same as what heavy motorsport applications use to...so I'll be fine with this 😉

What additional stress is this on the engine? Pistons, pins, rods, bearings?
@brockduffy8729
@brockduffy8729 6 жыл бұрын
Will Whiteside I wouldn't say too much wear on the internal of the engine since it's designed for combustion on the downstroke of the piston, but for sure your stressing the exhaust and turbo because a bit of the combustion is happening outside the cylinders.
@brockduffy8729
@brockduffy8729 6 жыл бұрын
Will Whiteside basically just a more violent way to keep the turbo spoiled while off throttle, so the wear will be turbo, and probably the cat, not so much the engine its self.
@DENicholsAutoBravado

Brock Duffy good thinking here from everybody. I'd like to add that when you let off the gas exhaust normally turns extremely lean. That's actually harder on a catalytic converter rather than easier. I think that this, if not to extreme could actually protect the catalytic converter from these lean times. I agree it pushes the turbo more, but hey, when you ask for that mode to be on you don't want the turbo spooled down. 👍

I am so glad you explained this Jason! A lot of people upload crap to KZbin with misleading titles and descriptions regarding to supposed anti lag sounds from cars which turns out it is usually just some pops from the exaust. Besides, I consider this as a big and necessary step forward in road performance cars, no manufacturer did this before, although it has been used in rally cars since the late 80s... Many people out there saying turbo lag is nice... I can tell none of them have ever felt the difference between antilag activated and deactivated. Jesus Christ... GrA Evo's and Imprezas run damn fast with that thing!!! And they sound wonderful!

My car has a different anti-lag system, called no-lift shifting (NLS). Basically, when you're at 100% throttle and the engine is revving high enough, you can change gears while holding the throttle pedal down and the ECM will rapidly blip the throttle to maintain engine and turbo speed, so that once you're in the next gear the turbo is already at max boost, thus there is no lag.

When I was able to ride and had carbureted motorcycles, we would shut off the ignition, wack the the throttle, and then flip the ignition back on again. This while rolling 30-40 mph in town. When the ignition is turned back on, all the unburned fuel that was hangin out in the exhaust goes boom! rather loudly. The noise on this video brought back memories.

It happens mainly in N-mode because by default N-mode is all setting put in Performance/Race. But if you push the checkered flag button twice, you go into custom mode where you can set things up as you wish. For example, I have mine (the i30N Performance, not the Veloster, as I'm from Europe) set to Custom with the dampers on soft for normal roads, rather than stiff for track. as it would be in N mode, engine in Sport+ as in N mode (there is Normal, Sport, Sport+), LSD in Sport, TC in Normal, etc. So if you get this and use Custom mode with it, and have it set up to use Engine in Sport+, while it does sound nicer and actually give you anti-lag (sweet :D) you don't want to use it everyday going to get groceries if you want your car to last for some time, plus you won't be that douche that annoys everyone in the neighborhood. You can put the Engine in Sport and have a bit of the sound (it's a bit less than in Sport+ but it still pops and bangs) and actually retain a bit of the turbo's life/durability. Also it's a good idea to leave the car on and idling to cool it's oil since it passes through the turbo to cool it, especially after riding it hard for some time and especially if you use N or Custom with Engine turned up. Safe driving everyone!

So what engineering has to take place for the components that have to contend with that high pressure escaping from the cylinder? The potential weakest link seems to be the valve, since it's small and a moving part. Just curious if they address that with design or materials or both.

is the bypass valve only pneumatically controled or they put a solenoid to keep the boost up during antilag /closed throttle scenario?

So is there any performance advantage to adding an Aftermarket Blow Off Valve to the Hyundai N system or is it just a noise maker? Any additional suggestions how I can get more out of the Turbo system of the N? Thank you for your time JIm

This sounds really cool and is a good solution. I am worried about longevity of the parts. All that heat and pressure going through the manifold and valve. If I bought this car I would be legitimately worried about those parts wearing down and breaking quickly. Obviously after the warranty. What is your experience with Hyundai's part longevity? Is this system nothing to worry about or would I start have problems at long milage?

You don’t have to use it, there are other modes if you’re worried about longevity. But engineers think about these things when they design it, and 100k is a long warranty.

The same thing I have in my Cooper s r61. When you are putting it in the sport mode it's start to pop and you can feel that the turbo keeps spooling much longer.

How does the cat hold up though, that hot air/fuel/oil mixture won't be easy... Do you know from which year they enabled it? I think the cat is the first thing that will start to give up

Is there a noticeable difference? Because I have a 2010 MINI Cooper S. It now has stage 2 tune and sounds just like that. Any way to be sure if it’s ALS or just noise? Thanks and great videos!

I would be curious to see how they avoid or have to deal with burned valves.

Please do a video on the 2019 Sonata Limited 2.0T. There is not one video on youtube highlighting the driving and turbo. Thanks in advance.

Curious to see if you installed boost gauge and see if the turbo is actually keeping the boost. Or do data log

The only other car I can think of that was supposed to release with anti-lag was the Prodrive P2 that was released 10 years ago but it wasn't some secret anti lag mode as it was a much flaunted feature of it, shame it never got released.
