Main developer of Freedom Planet here! Thanks for the mentioning our game! I just want to add a couple of points of clarification: First, the piracy conversation actually isn't used at all in the game, since we weren't sure how to detect if the player was using a pirated copy, but we decided to leave it in the game's audio files anyway as a neat little easter egg for curious players (and there are other unused bloopers in the files as well, such as one where the main villain sings). Second, the artwork you used of Lilac is actually very early concept art of the character; This design looked far too similar to characters in the Sonic franchise, so her appearance was changed to resemble a dragon more closely.

The best anti-piracy measures are those which are hidden and cause the pirates to out themselves without realizing it, such as some RPGs where enemies become extremely powerful after a few levels through the game, and the pirates then go online asking for help beating these overpowered foes.

Another one was Skull Girls. If it was pirated, you wouldn't get so much as the credits but a text box reading "What is the square root of a fish? Now I am sad." after beating arcade mode and before going back to the menus. Pirates would go online asking for the answer to such a riddle only to unknowingly out themselves in the process.

One big issue with calculating the ‘damages’ is the assumption that all pirated copies equal a missed sale. For example, a game cost 15 euros. 10 pirated copies aren’t 150 euros in damages. Most likely, 8 of the 10 ‘pirates’ chose to pirate it because they found the game too expensive, or didn’t have the money at all. Hence there is no missed sale, since the game would never have been bought. In retrospect, it is also believed that people who got to play 1 pirated game in a series, would then buy the restof the series. Something they would’ve never done if they hadn’t played a pirated game first. I’m not defending piracy here, but the damage calculations are often very shortsightef.
@LucisLou
@LucisLou 6 жыл бұрын
GabeN also had a good point when he said piracy is a result of a service problem or not being able to buy the game in the first place. People living in a lot of African and certain poor countries cannot buy games legitimately without paying a ton for importing and thus have to pirate games and play with emulators. People that want to and can buy games will do so. Those that cannot will pirate. And those that are lazy and don't want to do some work and get the tools to dump their own ROMs for emulators will download ROMs online instead.
@Buglin_Burger7878
@Buglin_Burger7878 6 жыл бұрын
Here is another fun thing. Emulating games often gives you some unique and cool features. As a kid I use to play tactical games or deal with RNG... as an adult I can now use said pirated copies of games I own to better understand them and even use Save States to learn which events are scripted, RNG based, or see things otherwise impossible. Yes, your experience can actually be ENHANCED because of the features.
@CiromBreeze
@CiromBreeze 6 жыл бұрын
Also some emulators have extra features too, which often makes playing on them superior to original hardware. Full HD 1080p Kirby Air Ride, anyone? Sonic Colours at 60fps? Smash Bros Melee with *online multiplayer?*

The only reason people are buying games is because anti piracy especially in consoles are a pain in the ass and is less routine (think NDS and R4 cards that is absolutely everywhere; nowadays trying to jailbreak even a 3DS and Switch could require physically resoldering the console with aggressive maneuvers from Nintendo to patch up known weaknesses, and games require internet collection to even function or be connected to others). In my days it's not just NDS games where people quit Pokemon altogether since the transition to 3DS, people who played Minecraft ended up never buying the game at all and is content with playing the pirated version until they grew bored of it. And even then some people still adamantly has to find a way to pirate games off the internet. Believing in people will buy a game down the road is silly.

3:41 that’s not the worse idea, considering a usual reason for pirating games is because that person can’t find the game anymore. So here, rather than punish the pirates, it’s appealing to their morals (which granted, not all have) and asking, instead of blowing the computer up like most, if you can contribute for being able to play the game. That’s a nice way of handling it for once.

In the PC game Starflight before taking off from your central hub planet you must enter three key words corresponding to an on screen number. If you enter correctly nothing happens, but if you enter incorrectly, next time you take off from a planet you will be surrounded by a swarm of hostile spaceships which upon inspection reveals themselves to be police cars. Using the in game communication system you are given a second chance to enter a correct password, otherwise you're mincemeat.

Puggsy on the Sega Genesis had a very simple copy protection system. The cartridge contained no battery save system, but the game was programmed to be able to write data to it. Thing is, many of the illegal copier devices DO emulate the battery save for copied games - so if the game can write to the SRAM, it knows you're playing it on a copier - and locks you out after the first few levels! "Right! That's all the levels of Puggsy you're allowed to play. Now go buy a cartridge version of the game instead of this silly copy"

The main issues isn't that "they are still selling them" its that the original creators aren't getting anything out of those sales. Like Deus Ex or any PS1 game, they might still be sold online but the original developers are either not around anymore or haven't touched the IP in a decade at least. Also, most "classic" titles aren't making a profit to anybody but the current IP owners, which is kinda shitty.

I firmly believe Piracy is okay so long as the game isn't produced or available from a first party anymore. I mean, buying a repro cart of a game, for example, isn't netting the actual developers any money, nor is downloading a ROM of a game that isn't for sale other than people on Ebay and the like providing it for absurd prices causing a loss of money for the company/developers.

That's by far my favorite anti-piracy measure in any game. It would do everything in its power to just annoy the player as much as it could. It would remove gems, remove eggs, crash randomly, and cause tons of glitchy effects. At the end, if you somehow managed to get through all of that torture, the game would crash and when it loaded back up, it would COMPLETELY erase your save file.

Being friends with one of the beta testers of Freedom Planet, he gave me access to a download link to the game, which technically isn't piracy per say, seeing how it wasn't cracked or anything, just an official download of the game meant only for the staff and testers to get a hold on, long story short, I played the game for free, I loved it, I bought two copies one on Wii U and one on Switch, and then promoted it to several of my friends eho bought it as well. Moral of the story is, sometimes "piracy" isn't the reight choice of word and by providing a free sample or being cool with gamers who may be low on cash or uncertain of a purchase, you'd be surprised they might end up supporting the product even more. One instant I'm never to forget is the anti-piracy in Spyro 3, untill this day it bothers me how Inever beat the game because of it, though I bought the Reignited Trilogy and hopefully I'll get around playing it someday and finally check this game off my list.
