Finnish conscription is the whole society in a miniature size. You are forced out of yout own bubble. You live and work with all kinds of people, All types of personalities, from all walks of life, from different social classes, with different political views, and convictions. Most of these people you would never want to be friends with outside the military. You will still learn to not just tolerate each other, but also work for a common goal. Of course, most of us return to our own bubbles after the service. But at least it gives us some understanding that the other bubbles also consist of common people, and it is possible to find common goals and work together for those goals.

Indeed. I even remember watching an "interview" on KZbin where a reservist told the reporter that when you walk into your local R-Kioski the person selling a pack of cigarettes to you most likely knows how to use anti-tank weaponry against armored targets.

Not good odds for Finland facing Russia at all. Russia could easily build a army bigger than Finlands whole population. And already there are more than 900k well trained and equipped Russian soldiers that have more war expierence than any military in the world since they have been fighting 24/7 for a year and a half in urban and any other style warfare you can imagine. Nice video! A bit off-topic, but concerning fire/paramedic stuff. Finland does also have very active volunteer fire fighting service (among other volunteer orgsnisations, there is quite a few). They operate volunteer rescue and first-responder units (there is regional differenrences what units are on call) that suppport the professinal units (rescue units are also capable of operating on their own if needed). It is possible to be in both reservist organisations and the volunteer rescue/EMS services. But of course in a war time situation it is likely that your skillset might be taken into use on the military side.

I really think the US should have had mandatory military service... but I guess it is supposedly a freedom to not be required to do that. Though I think the skills obtained not only help you defend your country in a time of need but help you help yourself when that country doesn't help you.
@whitescar2
@whitescar2 10 ай бұрын
It was a more common topic for discussion whether to maintain or abolish mandatory conscription and move to selective conscription before the events of both 2014 and 2022 invasions of Ukraine. You must recognize that it is placing a demand that (at least) half the population sacrifice a year of their lives for military duty. Of course, you *could* do things differently too. For example, the US may require an expanded reserve to be able to fight against China and Russia in the future. This could be achieved by, say, having a mandatory 3 month basic training for all men of fighting age. This way, if they are needed to be trained up, the actual training doesn't start from scratch and you can focus more on equipment and tactical training.

Now I am curious about Finland’s gun laws.
@jkotka
@jkotka 11 ай бұрын
You need a permit to own a gun, which requires you to have a valid reason for the gun. Valid reasons are reservists, hunting and sporting. You need to have a place to do the thing you apply it for, a gun range or for hunting for example you can do it on goverment lands. The type of gun you want to purchase needs to be a fit for the reason you need it for. For sports like IPSC/applied reservists shooting you need to show that you belong to a club, and its quite easy to get a b-lisence wich allows for 10 round magazines on semi auto. To get unlimited mag size, you need to show active shooting for one year with a note from your clubs shooting representativive. For handguns its 2 years. For the handguns and unlimited mag stuff you need to own a gun safe that conforms to a certain standard. Basic route for sports shooting: Join a club, go shoot with the clubs guns, after a while apply for your own gun. If you have a criminal history your application can be rejected.

@@jkotkaI wish more of europe would follow that. Finland sounds really based, here in the netherlands it SHOULD work kinda like that. But it doesnt, the goverment despises anything thats not olympic shooting and will work against you in a paperwork battle. Ranges shun away from granting semi auto licences because its seen as a risk of being shut down by controling agencies.

Finland is not liberal compared to others they are pretty free of what you can buy and such. Only thing, though, is you need a permit, reasoning, and a legit one cause self-defense is not a reason. Also, you can CCW a pistol by any means, can only carry your stuff on the range only. They don't have any magazine restrictions, barrel length, and even suppressor restrictions. If you take a look at the finland general population and their firearm ownership populations, it's pretty huge around 11% could be more now have firearms. Main hobbies in finland are hunting skiing, hiking, and racing

@jkotka
@jkotka 11 ай бұрын
@@Chris09978 True, we do have some limitations on the overal lenght and barrel lenght, 600mm and 300mm respectively. It is possible to own guns bellow said restrictions you just need to get a different permit for it, which requires justification that why is this gun required for the reason you are applying it for. Also it is possible to have a collector permit which allows for owning collections of guns. But yeah, 9.5" barrel carbine with a pinned comp is still a rifle, not a pistol, and can be purchased for sporting reasons.

Doubtful that the FDF will be selling them as surplus even when they finally start getting rid of them, being full auto and all...Also, they kinda made the state look stupid when the EU directive banned ownership of magazines if you didn't also have a licensed firearm and this was planned to set as law...Caused a lot of talk, since the army had sold a shit ton of AK, Suomi, Sten etc. mags as surplus over decades to just about anyone. Retroactive legistation being bad and all...I don't think they'll sell anything firearm related as surplus after that fiasco. Too bad, since it is planned to replace the Dragunovs soon, wouldn't have minded getting one.

I wish the US had considered conscription service. I understand the military life even for 2 years is definitely not for everyone. Nobody wants to get drafted during a war, but maybe just drafting people when there’s nothing going on and learning some basic skills and responsibility maybe get a few months of travel time in there and open your eyes a little bit to the real world would probably do a lot of Americans really good.

Much respect to the Finns and specifically active reserve guys like Jari. Sometimes I wish I saw the benefits of conscription service the way he does, back when it was relevant to me. That way I wouldn't have to catch up on all this stuff in my 30s at double pace. Strategically, expecting 5M Finland to hold out for any significant amount of time against an actual Russian invasion (not a failed-regime-change SMO) is about as dumb as expecting Russia to attack Finland in the first place. Ukraine was built and bred for this war for more than a century(but that's deep lore), Finland is its own country minding its own business, and was so even under formal Russian Empire rule. We've nothing to fight over and a lot to lose if we do. Let's enjoy sauna and drinks together instead. Big up to BJO, bringing interesting and valuable perspective into discussion, as usual. I was going to mention that your post smells like Russian propaganda, but you outright admitted that you ARE a Moscow dweller. For starters, Finland held up extremely well, for 4 years, against Russian assault back in 1939-1944, when Stalin started the WW2 alongside with his ally, the Nazi Germany. After that, we have been preparing for the next Russian attack the last 80 years, trying to play the "good boy" for the Kreml's drunken warlords so they wouldn't get a hissy fit and roll in the tanks. That's the "Finlandization" era, a sad stain in Finnish history. It's also insane how much you demonize Ukrainians, considering they're the ones that fed you, the ones You drafted against us (and the Nazis too) during WW2, and now assaulted without any remorse, even after your eternal Prez signed a non-aggression pact with the nation, 20 years ago, as a favor for returning the USSR era nukes to Russia. Now there's ~500k Russian corpses fertilizing the Ukrainian soil, all thanks to your genocidal tyrant that enforces extremely dangerous and limited world view. tl;dr: You are the bad guys. Putin has made Russia the #1 enemy of the free world. I hope you don't fall out of the window.

Actually, we have enough gear to give modern gear to 280k troops, beyond that, it’s going to be cold war era gear and steel helmets. NATO-supply aid would definately work wonders in the time of a real conflict, but Finland has always maintained a stockpile.

@@AussieStandsWithRussia Wow you really know nothing about Russia. So the name does translate to Boot lickers. No thoughts just licking boots. The Russian empire lasted from 1720s-1910s with multiple The Emperor and Autocrat of all Russia ruling it. The USSR may not have had an emperor but most historians agree that it is indeed an empire. An imperialistic one at that. You don’t need an emperor to do imperialism especially when you have a dictator ruling it.

Finland needs more troops and an actual military to defeat Russia. But they never have before so I doubt they would in the future. The St Petersburg Garrison is larger than Finlands entire military and reserves combined. Plus an additional 130,000 recruitment slots have been legally opened up. The Petersburg garrison is 80,000. Plus another 15-20K after the military increase. And that's JUST the garrison. The complete Russian armed forces is expanding to a little over 1 million in contracts and reservists alone. Add in volunteer groups, and the new PMC's popping up. Well Finland might regret backstabbing the best political ally they've had since WW2 and largest business partner and investor. Lets just hope they aren't dumb enough to start a conflict like Ukraine.

@seanprice7645 Article 5 is a "may choose to come to aid" not a "must come". Reread article 5. Ontop of that, most of Europe has depleted their war budget to aid Ukraine and don't have a military capable of modern warfare. The U.S is tied up in Syria, Haiti, Somalia, has advisors in Myanmar and Saudi Arabia as well as troops in the Pacific. They're not in a position to offer anyone troops and fight a war in Europe.
