You could fashion a base in oak and perhaps the first step of the spiral stair as it's such a good price and style.

That mannequin is a friend of Alexander's. You could tell by not a hair out of place although his wardrobe needs Alexander's touch. Gorgeous staircase. Remember the spiral staircase has to be big enough for all the people of the gallery to exit the building in case of fire. I am sure your local fire dept. will let you know that there are regulations that have to be kept for the fire code. Best of luck finding one that big!

I always love seeing entire bits of buildings in an antique shop. About 25 years ago, my mom and I were looking through a store in rural Illinois when I saw a church pulpit, complete with the staircase leading up to it. I forget what type of wood was used, but the detail in the carving and construction was terrific. The same store also had two gorgeous armchairs in dark walnut and dark green upholstery suitable for a Victorian library or men’s smoking lounge on the Titanic. I loved those chairs-too bad I was flat broke at the time. Also, moving them to my later apartments would have been a pain.

I'm always amazed at what you find in a French store for used things and what you find here in America. No comparison. Even a basic thing there in France is a piece of history, an object of art. Here there's plastic and old is maybe 100 years. I can't imagine even in France, that finding a spiral staircase is that easy, but there it is, right where Billy needs to find one. Amazing! I wonder if you could build a platform on the floor in the room you need it it, which has a couple of steps and then have the stair case on top of that. I love seeing all the old suitcases. I've seen people use them for their storage. You either stack them up from large to small or I've seen shelving made to hold the suitcases like drawers in a dresser, you just pull them out and open them.

Billy and Ryan: There are foundries that will make cast iron or even wrought iron spiral staircases, like Sean was talking about. They sell them by the section, so you buy what you need, if the purpose is the function, not necessarily the antique age of the pieces. I also bet a foundry would know where you can get an antique staircase of the *type that you are looking for, since that’s a specialized market.
