What makes alteori´s theory about the ginger haired boy just wanting to be friends a bit more likely is if you listen even more closely you can hear him scream "Lucas!" But afterwards "Run" so this kid was peer pressured by people to bully lucas and when they were alone in the woods trying to befriend him. Then the wendigo comes along attacks him and in his dying moments tells lucas to run and that is so dang heartbreaking

You know...I hate bullies and Hollywood tends to make them really over the top, but after that scene, I couldn't place it, but I couldn't bring myself to say he deserved it. Alteori's theory and both you and her pointing out his last words...maybe my subconscious caught it and that's why I felt bad. His death really is very sad.

Now this bit of info does make his death sad. Just hearing him call out to Lucas admittedly made me laugh like “heh, maybe if you hadn’t of followed him intending to hurt Lucas.” But if he genuinely did call out for him to run, I feel a bit guilty for relishing in his death despite his bullying and seeming asshat nature.

I'm deep into wendigo lore and while i thought it was a good spin on how the dad was still a dad rather then eating Lucas, i hated that it became a infection thing rather then a possession from lore. It would've been more accurate if the sister was the one "infected" because of her longing for alcohol rather then her brother that seemed like he was content with his life after the abuse.
@NoraIconiq
@NoraIconiq 3 жыл бұрын
Well it depends on the folklore theres a lot pf wendigo myths and almost every single one is different. Sometimes its the result of a curse sometimes is a inherited mutation that remains dormant til eating human flesh and in some myths they have deer features and some myths they dont. And some they dont have the features of animals or humans at all and others they resemble more human then animal. What they do agree on is that they are made from humans and consuming human flesh is involved. Also the transformation wouldnt be instant its would be a slow process. So the whole infection plot is accurate to atleast one of the myths.

First it was zombies. Humans have a ridiculous tendency to try to explain the supernatural with their primitive understanding of science. Now here we are in the 2020s and the demonic spirit that turns mortal men into the wendigo, is also dismissed as just a virus. Yet they wonder why their military forces fail to stop these monsters when they don't even have the balls to accept what it is that they are fighting.

Lucas was being groomed to be a wendigo. In most of the old tales wendigord were born because tribes ran out of food during winter and began to eat each other to survive. Lucas being so malnourished was a sign that he was on the path to becoming the same kind of monster as his father.

I was following this move since it's announcement, it could've been worse. I loved the monster design, corpse effects, the father character and locations. The abuse projection from the teacher was annoying, the blatant breaking and entering pissed me off to an extent, and the confusion on what the Wendigo is was a little distracting. It's not really about cannibalism, it's an infection spread through injury? So it's a werewolf movie. The ending was also off. Talking about Lucas being a baby tiger and growing up into something bad. Is that talking about the pre-Wendigo parenting or...? I don't dislike the movie, but I feel the abuse parallels were too on the nose and I wish we got more gorey kill scenes. Also, what ever happened to the first Wendigo

25:40 Different tribes have different versions of the Wendigo-myth (and god knows what got added over the years - the antlers being an example). In some versions people get possessed by eating human flesh, sometimes the Wendigo randomly possesses them while they are starving, sometimes the possession starts with the victim dreaming about the Wendigo and sometimes the spirit possesses someone who has been wounded, but not killed by another victim - like in the movie.

I thought of the wendigo in this movie and created my own theory on the host thing. I feel that when it dies it goes back to hell as in this movie it is a demon. But when it has a host it's kind of like a gateway to our world, the bodies are basically portals, the bodies are charred because the flames of hell are coming through as the portal is opening up. The fact the wendigo didn't kill Lucas though in my opinion, don't know what the writers thought of this, is so he can infect Lucas for later in case of its death.

Although I thought that the effects were well worth the wait for Antlers, there were some definite problems that I had with it, some of which you pointed out... Antlers is based off of the short story "The Quiet Boy" by Nick Antosca, which feels a lot more put together and darker. The filmmakers definitely took their own liberties to add screen time to the story, but if you haven't already, I'd really recommend reading "The Quiet Boy". Nick Antosca has a very somber writing style and at the heart of it, this story was always a sad one rather than pure horror.

@@discordiacreates6669 I think different cultures have different depictions of it. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark had one story called "The Windigo" where instead of it being portrayed as a cannibal, it's portrayed as a spirit of the cold that calls out to someone (in the story, the Native American guide named Defago) until they finally run out of the tent and are hauled away. Throughout the story, Defago is heard yelling out about his "feet of fire" and when the hunter he was guiding follows his tracks, they just suddenly stop as if Defago had been lifted up into the air. While not raised in native culture Wendigos and Skinwalkers are some of my favorite creepypasta subjects. That said, it drives my batty when they end up comingled in stories. As I understand it: Wendigo = Spirits of desperate hunger that (usually) possess someone who are starving and eat human flesh. The wendigo either possesses people or takes hold of them and drags them along behind it so fast that the feet burn off into stumps and they become a new wendigo. They also don't have deer skulls nor antlers. Skinwalker = A person whom is willing to something unspeakable vile to Native American culture. With most cases I've read about, this usually takes the form of slaughtering the person/people that you love and/or love you. After this act they have an ability to change their shape but it's usually imperfect somehow. The disguised skinwalker might be a misproportioned bird or a tailess coyote.
@Meatwesal
@Meatwesal 3 жыл бұрын
It drives me crazy how creepy pasta stories have misinterpreted skinwalkers into shape-shifting monsters that go around eating people, compared to the orginal lore. It reminds me of how the orginal tales of vampires made them to be truly horrifying undead things. But if you ask the average person on the street what they think one is, the sexy vampire trope will come to mind nine times out if ten. They have become so linked with sexual tones that you can't get away from it now, despite the orginals being much more like blood sucking ghouls.

Hollywood just doesn't get how many film releases have been ruined by poorly done previews. When you're doing a mystery or drama, showing the big reveal negates any point in seeing the film. It's especially egregious when they run the scenes in the preview in chronological order with the film. For a particularly bad example, find the preview for Free Willy. It might as well have been a Reader's Digest version of the entire film, including the big climax (or, more accurately, anticlimax).

That means a lot Marius 😀 welcome to the channel. It's kind of sad that nowadays saying that someone is fat is considered hate speech, or just merely stating your opinion can send people into a rage enough that they would wish violence on you. I have the same story with bullies who, funny enough, all apologized to me because they claimed they had been jealous of me. I was the only middle class student in the whole prep school. Every single other student was rich, their parents had mansions, gave them everything they ever wanted, paid them a hefty allowance, and they were jealous.... Of ME? the weirdo? That really shocked me and it really makes you think what goes on at their home to make them feel that way about another kid who doesn't even have half of what they have. There are some people who are just awful for the sake of being awful, but sometimes you can tell that the actions a person performs is not who they actually are. Sometimes it's a cry for help. I'm glad you feel comfortable with my commentary. I do tend to trigger some people but it's never coming from a malicious place towards anyone personally and I'm glad that you noticed that 😃 Again welcome to the channel for as long as you wish to stay! ❤️❤️

You made a point about Gingerboy that hit me really hard. Taking me back to middle school when I was viciously bullied by so many students. Your point was similar to what I've suspected about a few individuals, that they only do what they do to me because they actually believe they must in front of the other kids. What if one of them confronted me outside of school, one on one? I've always sensed those individuals would be completely different. Not that I could forgive them, but still. I was always curious, and here you are, your speculation coinciding with my own about my past. Fascinating, really. As for the Wendigo legends, I think it was made up by an Algonquin (or someone of a nearby tribe/nation) to warn against cannibalism, even if you're desperate, if the fall harvest wasn't enough and game was scarce and eating someone else who just starved to death is the only way for you & your family to survive the winter- _Don't!!! because Wendigo! Whooo!!!_ And it caught on because who knows what happens to one's spirit when their body's consumed by another? Does the eater's GI tract become haunted? How would _that_ exorcism go, assuming they practiced it?

Fun fact, wendigos are not even remotely related to deer depictions in any way, they are just grously deformed, lanky, tall, genderless, lipless, pale in terms of apparence with sunken features. Ironnicaly the creature more closely associated with the wendigo is the owl. Furthermore a lot of wendigo lore presented there in antlers is kinda fake as hell or a twist on something in actual wendigo lore.

Can confirm, if you stand up to bullies, a good amount of the time they will respect you. I kicked thirty one flavors of fuck out of my bullies in school and most of them at worst stopped doing the shit. Some of them even became my friends. I remember one time I tried to kick one in the nuts. ...I missed and slammed the toe cap of a steel toed boot into his taint. And lemme tell ya, though the brown NOTE doesn't exist, the brown BUTTON absolutely does. If you hit someone's taint hard enough you WILL make them shit themselves, and that's exactly what happened. Thankfully for him, there were no witnesses, so I told him to save some of his dignity by saying someone drugged him with laxatives. And it WORKED, because he was one of THOSE bullies that nobody had the oingo boingos to take credit for it. For that, I got plus one friend, and the school got minus one bully.

The wendigo is much more than a mere cannibal, it is the very representation of the terrible times of winter famine. With a cold soul and a voracious character, he is one of the last monstrous giants that ever lived in the third world before the arrival of the Navajos, the children of the corn or even the heroic grandchildren of the spider grandmother....
@ballbby3775

I don't know if that's really true but it sounds bad ass. Yeah the wendigo is sickness they get after consuming other humans. The horror of hunger is forreal we are lucky today we have food, but back then when Indians ruled the land they only had what they could make in the warmer months. I've read many a fur trappers in Canada, embedded with tribes for years tell of encounters the tribe had with wendigos. One old lady showed up an smelled horrible an when they fed her she pretended to eat, while eyeballing the children the entire time. Some braves noticed her an when they went to sleep they stayed awake, pretending to sleep but watching her an sure enough she got up an crept over to a sleeping child, but a warrior jumped up an smashed a stone axe into her head, said her ears, eyes nose, mouth everything gushed with a burst of blood an she turned to attack the brave but by then his buddys where up. They cut her head off an burned her body, taking the time to fish her icy heart outta the ashes and on a stick over the flames forcing it to burn. Many story's of encounters of those infected with the wendigo. Shits nuts too.

This Film is based on a very short story called “The Quiet Boy” They made several changes when adapting this. I would not even call the creature(s) a wendigo. It’s the result of his Father’s satanic rituals. There was never any meth, lol. the story is similar except Aiden has locked them up to keep his demonic brother and Father from eating everyone in town. They don’t “Eat” like we do. They feed on the pain inflicted by the way they kill their victims. They are sentient. Smart. They Talk. After the main character investigates the house, the police come and take the supposedly deceased bodies of Aiden’s brother and dad, to the morgue. Aiden goes to the main characters house and the teacher gets a phone call from the sheriff that someone was brutally murdered in very much the same way as all the dead animals they found in the house. Aiden’s dad and little brother rampage thru the neighborhood twisting anyone unfortunate enough to be in their path like a wrung out wet cloth….bodies utterly twisted and broken. The power is knocked out and The teacher and Aiden huddle in the dark as the hungry dad-monster is kept at bay by a metal cooking pot filled with burning newspaper- as the creatures apparently fear light. The Father-beast demands that she push him out of the light. “Give Him To Me. He Is My Son.” She would not. It eventually Cost her life. They find her broken corpse and no sign of Aiden. I dont know if He would have spared her had she given aiden back to him, but she refused to abandon him and save her own life. On the other hand- sticking her nose into other peoples business, got her and a lot of other people killed…. Im not sure she did the right thing. I was so hyped for this movie after reading the short story (you can find it online free if u want to read it for yourself) I really wish they had kept closer to the original ending- a hopeless stand-off with a demonic parent she had no hope of defeating. Do you think my description of the story would have been better on film?

It's an interesting film, more a psychological horror, albeit with gore, and i kinda saw a hidden message in it if it was actually such, that even though their father had turned he had enough humanity to recognise his sons and wouldn't hurt them, but his guardian instinct magnified countless times killing anyone who went near them. Anyway, what you all decide to do, have a good Christmas and enjoy yourselves. 😎😎 And remember ..... Don't go reading the Necronomicon Ex Mortis ..... Its bad!!

I saw this review pop off in my notifications so I had to watch the movie first. I was pleasantly surprised by this film, I enjoyed the characters for what they were- the side characters weren't great but that's expected. I enjoyed how pretty this film looks despite the dreary tone and atmosphere, the shot of Lucas in view of the background mountains was one of my favorites. I think the monster effects were handled okay, I'm not sure what kind of budget this film had but I feel like they made the most of it. We saw the monster *enough* and the cg wasn't bad at all and I belive there was some good puppet work too which I'm always here for. What I also think this film did well was subtlety with Lucas. As Alte mentioned in the video, he's a very disheveled child. The only chance he can have a decent meal is probably at school. That's a detail I didn't notice in the film, he's too busy hunting raw for his family- probably hasn't been taught to operate an oven or clean game (though he probably knows how to clean) His father being the only person to put good food on the table is being Wendified so all he can do is scavenge what he can get without standing out.

I agree! The creepypastas do it justice. Like I get the story has to be relatable to the majority audience of the region but if you're using another culture's mythology, they are the best ones to explain it but it's a bit cheap to just bring in a native American just to be like "oh YEAAAAHHHHH my culture thingie and here's how you beat" for the Americans to be like, "sweet thanks. Peace." Maybe they could have written it better.

Speaking of this, I imagined if there could be an original Wendigo film set in the early 1800s, which has its main protagonist actually be Native American. As a slight subversion of the Van Helsing trope, I envisioned this hypothetical film also having a Caucasian clergyman character, who is familiar with European monster folklore. But he would be utilized as a mere supporting character, who is out of his element in America and learns from the protagonist so he can make himself more useful. In turn, he shares his own stories of vampires and lycanthropes, which would create a sense of cultural common ground between him and the protagonist, as they work together to defeat the Wendigos.
