First of all, I really enjoy your videos. You mentioned that you'd only hit one homerun in the Bigs. Years ago, at 50, I was playing in an adult baseball league. Bunch of old farts, but most of them had played at least in high school, college, or in MiLB. Not me! I had only gone as far as little league. I didn't know many of these unwritten rules so it was an education for me. I hit my only home run off of a fastball thrown by a former AA pitcher. He obviously didn't know that I couldn't hit breaking balls to save my life! I hadn't even hit a little league HR. I knew about the pimping rule and I always liked the idea of just putting my head down and running around the diamond if that day should come. Well, when I hit mine, all of that went out the door. I was jumping up and down all around the bases. I'm still embarrassed, 20 years later! After the game, I went over to the pitcher and apologized and he was very kind about it, especially after telling him it was the first dinger I'd hit, in my life.

You mentioning your home run and that it came at Coors Field reminded me of a funny story. The Rockies had just clones a home stand and hit a ridiculous amount of home runs. They then left for a series with the Padres and the booster club left a message for the Rockies at the airport; a banner that read “Welcome to sea level!”

Last summer I played stickball on the empty tennis courts, against my very athletic female playmate. She was up 6-0 in the 2nd inning when she hit a ball heading over the fence for a three run HR, but it was heading foul. Sensing the ball was heading into foul territory, she immediately went into her Carlton Fisk imitation (waving the ball into fair territory), and the ball barely stayed fair for a 3 run HR. That really pissed me off. I took care of business, doing my best Jimmy Connors, 1991 US Open fist pumps, when I crushed her in tennis later that day. Love your videos!

So, my Dad and Uncle (on my mom's side) played pro ball and I played through college, so I've learned those rules and they're all legit "unwritten" rules. My Dad even played in the day of getting beaned, not just thrown at. As far as the "clear the dugout on the fight thing", that's in most sports. A buddy of mine from college got drafted by the Philly Sixers, he didn't come off the bench in one of those situations and later got released and not picked up by any other team. This guy was our point guard in college, he had beaten Magic Johnson's NCAA assist record and he was on the last ameuter Olympic gold medal team, so no slouch, but broke an unwritten rule. They're taken more seriously than the ones in the books

I agree about the bench clearing, and not showing up your teammates. Also the no bunting with a no hitter, unless your Rod Carew. Beanballs, well they are as baseball as White Ash Bats. The 3-0 when your ahead, ehh, if your a long ball hitter, then yeah hit away. But, if you're not a long ball hitter I say take the pitch.I agree about the no stealing or bunting when your way up on the score in late innings. Heck, football coaches call of the dogs in the NFL so as not to "run up the score". I like "unwritten rules" because they are part of the gentlemanliness and sportsmanship of the very , very competitive world of professional sports.

I'm sure the wearing a cap under the helmet while batting is a hold over from the 50's or 60's little league. In my 60's experience you kept your cap on because when you reached base the batting helmet was taken off for another batter. On base you wore another type, it was ear protection but not full protection. You wanted your hat because you were on the playing field. Some kids also folded the bill and stuck it in their pocket while batting. Hence the really fold bill. I preferred the cap under helmet. If you go back to some youtube clips of the sandlot you'll see the "base running" helmet that you changed into after reaching base

Hey Matt! I have a question and you would have the knowledge to give me an educated answer and that makes sense. In the Dominican, we have kids "que son protegidos" (they are secured) as young as age 12. Meaning, I have a son who is 10 years old. One "caza talentos" (talent hunter) sees him and starts training my son. At age 12, a scout sees him and makes a secret deal with me. The MLB may not know about this. At 16, my son gets a couple of millions dollars and the "caza talentos" gets a cut from the signing bonus. Can you give your opinion or do a video, please, about what is preventing a parent in a America (Canada & USA) from taking a 16-year-old kid to the Dominican and getting signed down here? Are rules or laws that prohibit this? Why is it fair for a 16 year old to get a 5-million-dollar bonus in the DR while in America they have to wait till they are 18 to get a career ending scholarship? I hope I am not insulting anyone with my last comment.

This especially applies to professional athletes in sports other than baseball (yes, you, Aaron Rogers) who, for some reason, have been duped into thinking that leaving the stickers on is some kind of style trend, when, in fact, the trend comes from poor urban youth representing to their peers that they are able to afford authentic MLB merchandise, as for a variety of reasons most have been precluded from the American apple pie experience of youth baseball and the concomitant socialization, so the images, icons, and paraphernalia were repurposed, only to become stylized by hip-hop and rap cultures. Years ago, Key and Peele did a comedy skit, "Dueling Hats," that illustrates well the underlying socio-economic-political meaning of the trend. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6GupWedlqqlrLc

I never knew that, I used to think it was a silly trend and I'm glad to gain a more informed perspective on this. It's very interesting, thanks for sharing.

These are unwritten rules of north american baseball though, not baseball in general If you are in east asia, ie japan, korea, taiwan, you have a complete set of unwritten rules foreign to north america No spitting on field, the field in japan is considered sacred Bow to the field, because it is sacred and you need your managers permission to enter Tip your hat if you hit a batter to indicate it was accidental Showboat and pimp out your homeruns, celebrations are perfectly acceptable, koji akiyama did a backflip to home plate in the 80s, alex ramirez, orestes destrade and many others had trademark celebrations You are 100% expected to cry, especially in high school baseball, its a tradition even Greet the umpires with a bow when at the plate Never throw your bat and glove out of anger, your equipment must be respected Never address your manager by their name I prefer the japanese unwritten rules Personally i think clearing the benches is stupid, i think too many oldies are too precious and imho do not respect the game, too much roid rage there and too much testosterone

Not sure if its in hear. My 1st year in A ball, 1988 Tampa Tarpon FSL. I got taken out of a game ( I was pitcher ), and when my manager Marv Foley came out to get me I flipped him the ball.He didnt even wait till the end of the inning or game, he followed me into the clubhouse got a bat and beat the crap out of one of our wood framed chicken wire lockers. I had no idea about that rule....lesson learned lol

Late to the party, but this happened to my favorite team at the end of 2022. This involves bunting/stealing. What is your opinion on a team eliminated from the postseason laying down bunts against a postseason contender in another division? Happened with the Cubs/Mets last year, I felt it was a bit cheap (especially because the Mets got swept) because they had nothing left to play for.

how is that cheap? it's actually an unwritten rule the team out of it will play their best players if the game matters for the other team - basically to keep up the integrity of the playoff race. but if they played another bad team or team that clinched already they'll play their younger guys/call ups etc. the team should be trying 100 percent to win especially in games that matter.

I've got one: don't cross in front of the catcher and umpire to get to the batter's box. I hadn't realized this one, just picked it up subliminally I guess, until I saw someone do it, and one of my teammates (who'd played briefly in MLB) shook his head. I'd never thought about it, but then, I'd never done it, either.

Chunkin at players heads for getting back at someone. Remember the Cards with Bob Gibson. You did not want to be the next player up after a teammate just hit a home run off Gibson. No one showed anyone up just a home run. That was one tough mean pitcher. You would get one high and tight - enuf that you needed to bail out big or hit the dirt. But that was Bob.

If its 1-0 and a bunter can't bunt do the opposing infielders need to play at a depth to at least theoretically guard against a bunt?

I would like to know about the do and don't about, during or related to a Arbitration debate between the team and the player. Is it true that the team will say some bitter/bitter/dirty thing of the players ability/performance?

For me, there are two types of unwritten rules. You have the first and most common type which is the “calling attention to yourself” type. This includes pimping HRs, running up the score by stealing bases, swinging on 3-0, etc. Then there’s the second and sillier type which is the ‘superstitious’ type like don’t talk to the pitcher during a no hitter, or crossing the mound or stepping on the foul line. These are the ones that are just made up constructs and only because it’s been passed down for so long that they even have any kind of actual power which is 100% just psychological.
