I went in December with a girl I met in Lisbon and had one of the best time of my live so far. The calmness and sheer greeness was so pleasantly overwhelming. Back then, we used to play in the cornfields behind our Azorean house. We would catch rides on the back of the wagons drawn by cows to get to the fields. We joined the Scouts on the Air Force base there (Lajes Field). We camped in a crater one time and explored the lava tube caves on the west side of island. We saw water spouts from our school windows sometimes (we had to go home). We loved it and would go back in a heart beat. With the Air Force still on Terceira, we could fly there on Space A for free!

@nelsonbrum84962 жыл бұрын
My parents were born in Faial, and were living there when the volcano erupted, they remember it well, lots of earthquakes. In 1984 we visited, and I remember walking around the old lighthouse.. with old furniture still in situ. While we were there we also visited Pico and we climbed to the top. We still have family on both islands, as well as the US east coast, and in California; maily Central Valley and Silicon Valley. My father inherited some land after my paternal grandfather passed, and my paternal grandmother moved to the US after an earthquake destroyed their family home (where we stayed when we visited), she passed away in the US. My maternal grandparents had moved to the US before my parents moved here in 1970. Their family home in Salao is still standing, and occupied by a distant relative. Portuguese is my first language, and I started kindergarten with barely any knowledge of English, just basics like alphabet and numbers to "20". My younger sisters were luckier since they both languages being spoken in the house. I've only been on Terceira, Faial, and Pico. I'd love to go visit the othe islands. Obrigado para o video, e bom dia o boa noite!

I live in the central valley of California and am surrounded by people of Azorian ancestry. Many go back in the summertime for the festas. I have done a lot of research on the history wondering how so many Californians came from these tiny islands. Your documentary answered some of those questions.

I’m from Portugal, and I have traveled some places like Thailand. But last year I firstly went to azores and I really feel in love with it. It’s calm, pacific, very amazing views and the natural hot water pools are the best. Here I felt safe and relaxed. In Thailand I felt some discomfort because the locals are always trying to sell you something or something, which is normal but I don’t like it. I prefer traveling without feeling the “pressure” from the locals to buy anything. There no one tries to take advantage of tourists. People are really humilde and respectful. They respect your space.

Amazing. Thank you so much for bringing the Azores to so many, especially to my mother, and myself. My mom being full Portuguese, therefore myself being half..... Our family is from the Azores, and had land there untill the government needed it for an airport. No one in our family has been able to afford to travel back there, so no one has been able to visit in over 4-5 generations. Seeing other's experiences, and travels there, we are able to visit as well, and live vicariously through those travels. That's why it means so much. So, again,... Thank You So Much. And Happy Travels.

Every time we stopped for fuel, back in the 70s, the Azores were windy. So so so glad to have viewed this documentary. Thank you.
@selah713 жыл бұрын
Back in the 70's I once took a chartered flight from Spain back to the USA. It was a small prop plane, (two seats on each side of the isle), and we had to refuel in Santa Maria. All of us passengers were tense. The entire flight was the scariest commercial flight I've ever been on and I don't scare easily. As we came into Santa Maria, it felt too low and I remember seeing cliffs seemingly at eye level. Then, I hoped we made it off the island and not fall into the ocean. It felt like we hit every air pocket of turbulence from Madrid to New York. After that, only 747's for me when taking overseas flights. Lol!
@marilynguinnane46633 жыл бұрын
@@selah71 -- I'm amazed in that a small prop made it across the Atlantic!! I would never have attempted that flight. Well, in any case, you had an adventure, hmmm?
@selah713 жыл бұрын
@@marilynguinnane4663 I wish I could remember what type/name of the plane. It was very, very small compared to the 747 I was used to, around 40 passengers or so. If I'd known the size and that it was a prop plane I wouldn't have taken the flight. But, I was a young military wife and the price was extremely reasonable when I saw the advertisement on base. Yep! It was an adventure. Especially since I was also pregnant!
@marilynguinnane46633 жыл бұрын
@@selah71 -- Well surely you stopped for fuel numerous times, as prop planes have such a limited range. Are you quite certain that it was a propeller driven aircraft?
@selah713 жыл бұрын
@@marilynguinnane4663 It definitely wasn't a jet and had 4 propellers. It couldn't fly at the high altitude big jets can and is why we all suffered a lot of turbulence. We only made the one stop to refuel at Santa Maria. Maybe someone with aviation knowledge who reads this can identify the type plane. When we landed at JFK the relief was palpable. Other than whispered praying, we were quiet while trying to remain calm. Hysteria wouldn't have done any good anyway! Only one other time did I want to kiss the ground once landed and that was years later after being in a 2 seat Cessna. The pilot wanted to do a stall. I threatened to kill him if he did, and if we lived! Lol!
