My sister got hit by a raft of those ants as a kid, down in Louisiana. We were playing in the flood water, and when she got hit they swarmed her head to toe and stung her all over. She developed allergies to all insect stings after.

Cool facts about one ant species, Tapinoma sessile, the "bleu cheese ant," aside from smelling like bleu cheese when accidentally(?) squished, has colonies that can extend for two to three city blocks. Also, when they come in, they clean up whatever sugar or hair they find, and after two to three days, leave, no insecticide needed. One thing among many that just tickled me here was the idea of studying pitcher plants vis-a-vis toilet improvement, versus water slides: That gives new meaning to the oft used phrase, "I'll be right back. I just have to drop the kids off at the pool." Mr. Hankey comes to mind. There is a South Park episode lurking within this research.

I had a fantastic holiday down in Costa Rica. We went all over the country but one of the things that fascinated me was when we went for a walk through Cahuita National Park where we saw all kinds of animals but the one that fascinated me the most was leaf cutter ants. I sat and watched them for over half an hour taking pictures and video. It was great! If you ever want a holiday where the purpose is to try and see the animals that are there, which is what most of my holidays are, then I highly recommend Costa Rica. The people were extremely friendly and the wildlife is top notch!

Larger ants can grip and move larger things and can defend better against certain types of threats. Smaller ants can get into smaller places, and can defend better against certain other types of threats, and need less overall energy per active unit/soldier/mouth thereby allowing better use of the overall supply of energy by allowing the proper and most exacting use of energy. All reasons I can imagine contributing to the evolution of the species we see today (not that the process is over obviously 😉)

Axolotls don't "grow up" because of a mutation they don't have the pathway to mature fully into adults. However! If they have a mutation of that mutation that allows that pathway to progress, they *do* become more typical-looking salamanders. It's wild.

It took me a while to build up courage to watch this episode because I have a history with ants… European red fire ants (Myrmica rubra). When I was about 3 years old I played with my aunts garden gnomes while they drank coffee outside. Unfortunately they had built a nest in one of the gnomes. I was covered from head to toe with red ants within seconds, they even were in my underpants. They put me under the shower to get them off as fast as possible. I don’t remember it but developed an entomo- and arachnophobia. It got better over time (being a mom requires that in a way) but the second they touch my skin it‘s over. I‘m quite proud that I love gardening so much that insects hardly ever bother me phobia wise, aphids may be the bane of my existence but hey, I can touch an infested plant with gloves on. Bring me all the snakes, slimey critters, rodents and whatnot, I don’t care. But insects and spiders are the typical „no thanks, not near my physical body please“
