Pretty sure itch is not a separate feeling it is pain and the itch receptor is the same as the pain receptors nociceptors Ever notice when you have a small irritant on your skin you’ll be like “ahh” and slap or brush or scratch the area instinctively Also to hanks story I notice that if an area is numb and it gets cold it itches inside for some reason so perhaps the itch sensation is a negative response of sorts perhaps it’s generated by a lack of signal from the nociceptor at a time of it being checked for a baseline signal that should be there Perhaps when an irritant is on the skin but isn’t doing damage to activate the nociceptor the nociceptor will shut off a signal to notify the brain that something is abnormal but not damaging currently

Let's not forget the suture ant. They're so cool. They have actually been used to close wounds when sutures aren't available. When the ants bite they can't open their mandibles again. The are used to close wounds then their bodies are removed and their heads are left still holding the skin closed, like sutures. So cool!

Hasn't Coyote Peterson been bitten by a bunch of stuff on camera? idk if he's done every bug but he feels like the closest to someone who is capable of redoing this - like he's got such a head start

Yes, he did a series on his KZbin where he progressed through the most painful bug bites/stings. All I really remember is some kinda small bug with a 360° rotating stinger. I think it was a velvet ant but don't really recall.

Fun fact, histamine release in the skin is why opioids make people itchy. Many Mu opioid receptor agonists, like morphine, release histamine from mast cells, which are directly associated with the allergic response. Histamine plays many other roles, too. It causes stomach acid to secrete through the H2 receptor, and Zinc, which deactivates stomach acid secretion, causes more histamine to release as the body tries to reach homeostasis. Prescription anti-acids block the H2 receptor. Also, black pepper increases histamine by working as a reversible MAOI, which is one way black pepper helps to aid digestion. In the brain, histamine plays a totally different role. It releases in the morning as you wake up, along side noradrenaline, dopamine, and cortisol. In fact, H3 receptors butt up right next to dopamine 1 and 2 receptors, and histamine helps those dopamine receptors engage to take on dopamine better. Without it, those dopamine receptors can't deactivate the stress response caused by the cortisol release. If you ever felt groggy and a little panicked after waking up, you may have been experiencing low histamine levels in the brain. Even more, while the other transmitters decrease in level a few hours after waking, histamine levels continue to remain elevated until it is time to sleep. It is crucial for wakefulness and memory, and without it we get drowsy. This is why 2nd generation antihistamines like loratidine were designed to not cross the blood brain barrier. In contrast, Benedryl (diphenhydramine) can cross the BBB where it blocks H1 receptors and conks you out. The serotonin reuptake inhibition (among other mechanisms) also contributes to this sedative effect. Thanks for reading my info dump.

The Schmidt Insect Sting Pain Index is perhaps not necessarily a useful tool for predicting how painful a sting or bite is going to be, as much as it is an interesting look into how different people experience different 'painful things.' The velvet ant is one of the 4s on the list and Schmidt's description of it makes it sound like you'll be wishing for death for hours (he ranked it among the top 3 most painful stings), but I know Clint from Clint's Reptiles tried it together with someone else and they hardly reacted at all. For them, the burn was fairly mild and it went away after about an hour or so. Painful, for sure, but hardly the soul-crushing ordeal it had been to Schmidt. Why would this be the case? I don't know I'm neither medical doctor nor entomologist, but I think it's probably a combination of slight differences in chemoreceptors making it harder for the ouch compounds to tell them they should feel pain; maybe some immune system differences neutralising a lot of the venom more quickly; and maybe to a lesser degree differences in pain tolerance. Or who knows, maybe those particular velvet ants were just shy and couldn't perform as well in front of a camera due to stage fright. Like I said, neither a medical doctor nor an entomologist.
