I’m a therapist and just have to say- you did such a good job describing anxiety and the skills to manage it! I’m seriously taking notes to help my clients! Many of these are things I do with clients but you said it all in such a digestible way, it is so helpful. This is going to help so many people!

I am so impressed with the quality of your advice and the insight into your own experiences is so comforting. I've been in counselling for years for pretty debilitating generalised anxiety and everything you mention in this video is so accurate and EVIDENCE BASED! The most important thing I've learnt is that the goal isn't to REMOVE your anxiety, it's to be comfortable WITH your anxiety (don't fight or fix it, just accept it). Once you accept that it's ok that it's there and might always be there, you find this overwhelming peace with yourself ❤

I started taking SSRIs because I was losing my mind last year after getting burglarized. The state of the world didn’t help either. I immediately found relief once I started meds and am so glad I got on them! For reference, I was doing all the things: meditating, journaling, affirmations, therapy, etc. etc. beforehand. Posting this to let you know it’s ok if you get on meds if you think you need them!

Hi Jenn! I absolutely felt emotionally safe in this video. To anyone reading(including myself) no matter what we see, do, hear, we’re all going to figure out what connects with us to believe in something. So at the end of the day I think it’s like this: a person who eats and stresses about wanting to eat healthy can be more unhealthy than the person who eats unhealthy simply because they don’t stress about it. Anxiety, stress is truly a killer of everything. Just try to go on with your day and you’re going to be great. Easier said than done of course, but I believe in you, you can do it!! Keep tricking your mind and saying this

With regards to the medication it's also really important to note, that it generally doesn't fix the underlying problem. The purpose of taking SSRI's is in most cases to make you stable enough to be able to do what you've done - working on your maladaptive mental patterns.

I literally had a heart to heart with my mom discussing this exact topic last night. Anxiety is very present in my family and she was being so judgmental about the “weird” behaviors of my cousin and me and my sister and my niece and nephew and aunt and I had to literally break it down for her: we all struggle with anxiety and depression, this is why she doesn’t shower or he can’t be alone or she panics when she leaves her house or I wear lose tops (I feel constricted like I’m choking in tight fitting clothes) and we are all just learning how to manage our triggers so we can function out in the world, sometimes we have to be accommodating to each other’s needs and judging them isn’t helpful, what’s helpful is understanding where they are coming from and giving them the space and support they need to get through it. It was like I could literally see the lightbulb turn on in her head like it had literally never occurred to her that people could possibly struggling with mental health. I can tell this sunk in because later she brought it up and was asking about other things she observed and I was like yes, now that we know what it can look like it’s not our place to intervene and go tell them that they are being “weird”, it’s our place to be supportive of their needs so they can learn manage their mental health without judgment and her face was like 🤯

My anxiety peaked crazy high when I was super down. I realised it hits me when I’m feeling terrible and insecure about myself. My anxiety is the worst when it comes to work stuff. Like i made a bigger deal of tasks than what they are. Even when my boss was totally not mad/ wasn’t bother about them. But in my mind, my anxiety kept saying “itd a big deal. U gotta do it now”. It made me so anxious 24//7 and jumpy unnecessarily. I made the decision to be transparent with my boss about my anxiety issues. He was surprised as i never showed it but was supportive and told me not to sweat the small stuff. I’m still battling with anxiety but I’m trying different things to overcome it :) thanks Jenn for this video!

at 6:30, "don't fall in the trap of doing what the anxiety monster says. it provides you temporary relief but you're not letting anxiety run its course. This trains your brain that you can tolerate a full anxiety cycle." - this perfectly explains how my anxiety absolutely dissipated / got obliterated after my Vipassana course. I had to go through anxiety and anger cycles on my own through meditation in silence with no tech, no conversing.. super hardcore way to learn how to get through an anxiety cycle. I'm saying this 3 months after coming back home from Vipassana. Crazy!

@itsyessli, all first time go-ers must do the 10 day Vipassana course. I went to the one on Vancouver island, Duncan. It was a smaller setting, during COVID (so even smaller) which was so nice because I had more one-on-one time with the teacher. After you complete the 10-day course, you can attend 1 day sits, 30 day sits, 40 day sits and volunteer! I loved my experience and would go every year to sit and volunteer when I can

Hi Jenn, last year i had a cold sore outbreak on my lip that turned into an entire bacterial infection that spread across my lips. i had never experienced something like this nor had i ever had a cold sore in my life. with covid, no doctors were seeing patients in person so i had to wait weeks before being seen and weeks again for seeing a dermatologist. i went to 3 dermatologists before i was properly swabbed and given the right medication. even a year later my lips are healing.. when you talked about riding the anxiety out it really resonated with me because ive had to train and tell myself over and over that 'it will pass' and that our bodies have an immune system designed to fight off diseases, and have to also constantly remind myself to trust the process. thank you for sharing your story

As a therapist, I love that you're making psychoeducation about therapy, CBT, and anxiety so approachable + accessible to your wide audience mixed in with our own personal experience, Jenn! :) I love that your therapist introduced you to ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)! I love that it focuses more on identifying your values and enacting behaviors that are aligned with those values, giving less power to those anxious thoughts. Every time we don't let the anxious thoughts win, we're reinforcing our own sense of agency that we can let the anxious thoughts pass the next time without it getting a reaction from us. It is one of the primary modalities I use with my own clients at the cancer center I work at! Thanks for always keepin' it real, Jenn! :)

If you avoid sweating, everything makes you sweat (coz you end up never moving, and get really unfit). If you avoid anxiety, everything makes you anxious (because of the anxiety compulsion loop Jenn showed). Practicing feeling all our feelings, makes us better at feeling all our feelings. And the gold key - why do all this? Because we all DO have things we value in life, and so we focus on walking towards those. So glad you have a good therapist!

This was actually really helpful. I don’t have severe anxiety, but it does mess with my everyday life. I think I’ve learned to accept it, because when I do, afterwards it’s always good again. It’s frustrating because it is like a cycle and can be difficult for others to do.

Jenn, thank you so so much for sharing this. I have anxiety and have been becoming a hypochondriac because of it (among other things lol). Two years ago I got food poisoning and for the last two years I have been so afraid of it happening again to the point that I don't like to eat out often anymore or if I do, I make myself sick worrying if I'm going to get sick! Even if I cook at home and thoroughly cook everything or over cook everything, I worry about maybe cross contamination of something outside of my control making me sick. And recently I found out I have deposits in my eyes that are present in people who develop macular degeneration. So I had been so so afraid about my eye health and have been hyper sensitive to eye floaters and eye pressure and things like that. So I really appreciate you making this video and sharing your anxieties because I don't feel so crazy! I really appreciate all your tips and taking the time to explain things are sharing what you learned from your therapist. I feel like I'm not alone and now I have some resources that I didn't have before so thank you!

I’m a mental health therapist and only have a bare minimum of training in CBT and this was so helpful and educational to me! It sounds like you have a very knowledgable therapist and I’m so happy to see how far you’ve come in managing your symptoms. I had a period of extreme anxiety myself upon moving to the UK from the US, and experienced shooting nerve pain behind my eye, as well as tingling on my scalp. I saw opthalmologists and had MRIs and they came back normal. It’s crazy what anxiety can cause our bodies to do! ❤️

Just wanted to comment and put this out there: it’s totally ok to take SSRIs if that’s what it takes! First of all, please go see your doctor or psychiatrist to diagnose how bad your anxiety and depression is. If it’s moderate to severe, they probably will recommend you to take medication such as SSRI along with therapy. I used to resist the idea of taking medication as well, but if your situation is severe enough, that’s probably what you need to get you out of the dark place.

I learnt to visualise my obsessive anxiety thinking as a whirlpool. Am I having the same thoughts over and over, spinning around this thought whirlpool? If yes, then I'd visualise myself physically getting out of the whirlpool. Another thing I learnt was am I having fake conversations/arguments in my head? Like imagining what I would want to say to someone who upset. I literally tell my brain this isn't real! This isn't a real conversation. The hardest thing is to learn the art of letting go.

Jenn so grateful for this video of yours 🙏🏻I deal daily with anxiety and the dots in my vision too! It happened to my the same thing, I was seeing more and more dots because my anxiety wasn’t helping me! And then I would start to have panic attacks and feel that something was wrong with me. The way I started to deal was not giving so much attention to my dots, accept them and when I start to panic I would say to myself “Isabel everything is ok”. Another thing that helps for me is opening window and feel the cold wind, or have cold bath. Thanks for these videos Jenn it helps so much!!! This is such a timely video for me. I've struggled with anxiety and severe panic attacks since I was 13 years old (I'm now 30), and I would agree with every single bit of advice you gave, especially the idea of calling a friend for accountability rather than reassurance. So many of these strategies are difficult, but you're right, when you're trying to change those neural pathways in your brain, it's worth the effort! My relationship of the last 5 years just ended in large part because of my mental health issues and it's nice to be reminded of these ways of trying to mitigate the intensity of the anxiety. Thanks for always making amazing, thoughtful content Jenn. I never skip a single one of your videos.

Love love love this video. I had some very similar experiences with anxiety and CBT is where's at. I had really bad, unmanageble anxiety and my therapist help me transform into the person I knew I could be and wanted to be. It's a long process but I'd not change it for the world.

This is such an incredible video I’m gonna show my students before an exam. Also… Was I the only one that thought that the night vibe and her calm voice were part of the therapy theme but it was just late and she was trying to be quiet,, love it regardless

Your 'floaters' may also be a migraine-like phenomenon. You can have something called acephalgic migraines which is symptoms of aura (and other sensory symptoms like light sensitivity) without the headache. You could be having frequent visual auras that look like floaters. Migraines are related to hormonal fluctuations so are common/get worse in the peripartum period. I had classic retinal migraine for the first time in pregnancy (which is actually very rare) and I now frequently have similar symptoms to what you describe postpartum. Sometimes multiple times a day and other days, I don't notice. Migraines also flare up with lack of sleep, stress, caffeine intake, nutritional deficiencies, cloudy weather etc, etc. Whatever it is, the management is the same - taking good care of yourself. Whenever I have health symptoms, I think about them as a cue to ask myself how I'm doing. The visual symptoms you're having sounds like they are not pointing to any specific cause per se but they ARE telling you to pay attention to your overall wellbeing. Maybe you need to take a rest, or drink water, or go into a dark room away from sensory overload, or say no to something that is overwhelming you, or socialize, or ask for help, or do something that is pleasurable or enjoyable. Your anxiety, just like the visual symptoms are also a sign from your body that is trying to get your attention. Exploring the root cause of the anxiety physically (e.g. nutritional status, thyroid levels), emotionally (e.g. what does being a mother mean to you? Perhaps it's triggering old feelings of responsibility towards others as if you have the power to make or destroy them) or spiritually (e.g. losing connection with a bigger purpose, big picture). For me, allowing myself to feel angry (by feeling the anger in my body, not acting it out towards the baby) and not feel guilty about it has been helpful. It tells my brain that my emotions are not destructive. Lastly, losing the integrity of our abdominal muscles during pregnancy can also contribute to feelings of anxiety as we no longer feel a strong core. Balance-promoting and weight bearing exercises can help with this. Sorry this comment was so long. I'm an integrative psychiatrist who is also a first time mom (:

The "your reality is whatever you choose to focus on" is tricky... I chose to focus on the good sides of my last relationship and romanized everything and completely missed very important signs that we were not on the same reality and that I wasn't in the good career. There is a fine line between that and disillusionment.

Pregnancy labor recovery very physical. It's underestimated how scary all these changes can be. I didn't cope well and I have an underlying illness too. It's a lot of stress plus hormones. I was not prepared from the physical tole pregnancy took on my body. I think so many of us have health anxiety but being pro-active& solution focused is so positive & self care. Your doing so well 👍💞❤
