RAM 1500 Laramie VIDEO car review
RAM 1500 Laramie is the top of the range in Australia. The USA gets an extra couple of models but the conversion to right hand drive would slightly prohibitive.

SEE OUR FULL REVIEW HERE
Although the Express starts at under 80 grand, Laramie costs slightly more, at $99,950 plus onroads. That’s a lot of tamales.
RAM prides itself on having a high level of equipment, and so it does. You can go bananas ordering gorgeous goodies from the USA catalogue too, if you really want. Everything fits right in.
The only thing you can’t add later are those handy RAM Boxes, and who doesn’t want a big solid RAM Box? They are built into the tray and sit over the wheel arches. You can fill them with no end of tasty delights, tools, guns (god forbid), or your favourite fishing gear. If you fancy a tasty cold beverage, throw in some ice and a few dozen bottle of champers.
While Ford has switched to aluminium, Ram is good old steel. The cabin has a good old feel too. All the modern goodies are present and accounted for. Uconnect 3 includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. You can also stream music through the USB and Bluetooth systems.
Seating is as comfortable as a lounge room, and as warn as a hug from your nan. You don’t expect a truck to feel so welcoming, but welcoming it is.
Pick-ups can be totally utilitarian, but where’s the fun in that?
The 5.7L V8 is a brute of a thing. It pumps out 291kw and a somewhat more thrilling 565Nm of torque. RAM is a true 4X4 and comes with a smooth 8 speed automatic. Steering is as light as a feather. No one wants to build up biceps while towing a 5th-wheeler, right?
I dream of towing a luxurious 5th-wheeler decked out in all the latest mod cons.
Ram 1500 is big, it is bold, and commands respect with its overt sexuality on full display.
The opposition are LCVs like Hilux, Navara, Colorado, and Amarok, but they don’t come close to the luxury, power, or capacity.
• Engine: 5.7L V8 petrol producing 291kW/565Nm
• Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
• Warranty: 3/ 100,000km
• Safety: Not tested
• Origin: USA
• Price: from $79,950 drive away (Express), $99,950 Laramie
My Rating: 9/10

I absolutely love my Laramie and they are tough, I hit a big black bear on my way to work the very next morning after I bought it. It bent the bumper but if I would have been in the grand Cherokee I previously had, then it would have totaled it

I've owned 2 of this generation Ram 1500's and neither of them have ever disappointed me in any way. The ride and handling are fantastic for a vehicle this size and there's always enough power to tow and haul anything I need.

I like how in Australia there considered big vehicles. But over here in America they're considered fairly small trucks.

When they start hav'in problems with sensers/computer/parts .. it's a nightmare to solve here in Australia ,, the fact is even at a chrysler dealership their last resolve is just to replace parts until problem goes away ,,,$$$$$ this is true .... love the idea ,but nooo .. if i'm going to spend money i'll go with time tested here in Aussie ...SAD ,,good luck cheers

Rich man in the states lol, they start at $40 k Australian in the states, compared to $90 in Australia. As for the Ram box, it’s for guns, Ram Australia flog them as ice boxes to validate the extra money.

In Australia can you at least level these trucks (about a 2.5 inch lift up front) to get some decent t tires on them? I would also recommend the 3.92 gear

Have fun when it starts to fall apart on Australian roads. I live in Canada and these things just do not last. The cruiser is far tougher and more reliably built. These things are more life style/show pony vehicles. Yes comfortable on the highway but dont depend on them to be trouble free and take a beating for very long. Stick with the Hilux.

@@hurelllucieer6225 What a well thought out and planned response. Any evidence of that ? I'm an auto mechanic and the new Hiluxs are far from crap. Most reliable of the bunch.

Seen them in a work environment and far from reliable. Known to get dusted. The auto is crap and performance is nothing special. Oh and being Toyota, stupidly expensive.

@@hurelllucieer6225 Well you would be the first person to say that. They use tje new platform all over the WA mines and they routinely run over half a million kms easily. Keep the common rail systems clean and they dont give any problems. I work on everything and anything and very rarely see a new Hilux with problems. The Tritons/Navaras are no where near as sound. And the D-Maxs blow propeller seals and lose the turbo quite often. And the Ranger is a rolling recall on wheels with a pissy weak trans. Junk. The Amaroks pop motors around 120 thousand. All modern utes have issues. How ever the Hilux is still the most problem free.

Buy American trucks at your risk. I live in America and big 3 American trucks are marketed as mostly lifestyle trucks. They don’t have the reliability of the Japanese trucks. You have much tougher roads and conditions in Australia so check with folks who already owned and used these before buying one.

very true @@coopsnz1 New Chrighten is a shrewd and very astute businessman. He knows that no matter what it costs in the USA, if you want to bring one here it is going to cost big bucks, and that's if you can register it after an RHD conversion.
