I enjoyed York actually. Me being a casual player and not being able to do many campaigns on Hard difficulty I found it very easy to amass 50,000 gold just collecting 8 relics. Moving forward you base to destroy the next opponent was annoying though so I can understand why you didn't like it. Bukhara is my personal favorite :)

I like York too. I like having to go back and trying to complete different goals, and settle different places, For example, last time I played, I settled Isle of Mann and did the ‘destroy 5 enemies’ goal which included the Irish kingdoms. Always play on hard. Tons of fun! Some of the goals, I’ve had to buy copious amounts of stone to avoid collecting 50.000 gold
@mattender83233 жыл бұрын
Played on Hard and decided to go to as close as possible to all the objectives. It was... AWESOOOOOOOOOOME. I could have won on wonder or Gold long time ago, but I wanted to bring the English to their knees. I mostly left Irish alone, yet I still raided them for money. This battle is worth more than 3 missions combined sometimes. It also plays off of Vinlandsaga. These two missions are in such a stark contrast, it's beautiful. I wouldn't mind one more scenario like that being added later in the future. Last Hauteville mission reminded me of it a bit, even though it's not a ludicrous map.

It's hard sometimes to rate the older Age of Conquerors scenarios given how much further scenario design capabilities have progressed since then. Like Tours is pretty simplicitic and then you have things like York which is massive and uses raiding mechanics to gather reasources. And then you have Honflangas which has 2 very different incarnations and both have very unique mechanics in it.

I've never played York (and I think I won't because of the ludicrous size map, which my pc certainly can't handle), but I actually liked the idea of a "big, epic, viking battle" with a huge map if it wasn't for the inevitable lag. Also, I think it's kinda nice to have three ways to win the map with one being the easiest. It can give some replayability to the scenario and give new levels of difficulty (oh, you can easily win with the wonder in the lowest difficulty but can't do it in the moderate? Try winning without the wonder in the easy mode).

Maybe for more "typical" players it's not as much of an issue, but I really think the fact that you have to "lose" for it to progress needs to be more clearly telegraphed. If you're a good RTS player you can struggle against those attacks for a while. I remember restarting a few times wondering if there was something I was missing. Normally I don't need to micro too hard to do well in AoE2 against the AI but this was much harder. Turns out I *was* missing something.
@afz902k Жыл бұрын
I love grinding this scenario and keeping Calakmul out, you can do it pretty much indefinitely by just massing skirms. I usually wait until I have lots of resources and have researched everything, then I delete all my own buildings to make sure they don't get anything when I choose to give the city away to them. At that point if you let a Calakmul unit into your base, it will count as "having been conquered" even if you are still winning ;D. At that point I usually side with Tikal

I almost completely agree with your rankings. The main differences would be that I'd put "Lake Poyang" higher and "Vinlandsaga" lower. The former is packed with lots of really unique challenges and is probably as fleshed out as a naval mission can be; I find it brutally hard, but also really fun and rewarding. Vinlandsaga, meanwhile, is awesome for its presentation, but it feels a little slow because Britain puts up little fight, while taking out Greenland takes a really long time due to your lack of gold or access to the Imperial Age (even though you can technically just bypass them).

Amazing video! I wanted to share some of my thoughts and experiences. Similar to your bias with Noryang Point and Korean history, I am the same with Japanese history. Likely my bias speaking, but I want to rate Kurikara A-tier. You pointed out how Kyoto utilized the Japanese navy and, similarly, I adore Kurikara for it's full on focus of Samurai. When I first played this and Minamoto showed up with the mounted samurai, I was freaking out. So memorable to me. I also feel that the map and objectives incentive fun Kataparuto use! In general, I would love to see full campaigns for Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans. I last played these a few months ago so all this was a refresher. Right when you got to Manzikert I just said instant D-tier, no question. I am a bit of an optimist and I truly try to see the best in all the scenarios. I strictly play on normal speed so it was that much more grueling in hindsight. I actually remember just alt-tabbing to desktop and letting the resources flow in because I was so disengaged from the whole thing. Bapheus was absolutely hard as nails for me. Played it on hard difficulty and going for the achievement of defeating all enemies with no allies. Such a satisfying challenge and so fun. Lastly, Lepanto was a great scenario to see my growth as a player. In the past, I used to just completely play all scenarios defensively and remember Lepanto being quite difficult. Lepanto is rewarding to see just how effective an all out offensive strategy can play out.

My tier list: Bukhara - A tier, maybe even S tier cause it's only official scenario where you can mass War Elepanthos bois Dos Pilas - C tier, grind mission, thank you but no from me Tours - B tier, nice but average scenario, nothing extra difficult except the first assault, one well-placed castle stops all the trouble, though York - S tier, lots of options how to win this one, one of 2 Vikings scenarios, overall incredible fun but the grind and the possible lag could be a huge no-no for some people. I don't recall experiencing it and I have a potato PC. (Fun fact: I never did Wonder objective) Honfoglalas - D tier, I feel like you have to "cheese" this one otherwise it's unbeatable, you have to asap snipe Moravian TCs and defeat Avars, then you just hope you have enough time to transition into normal playstyle and build castles to defend against technologically superior East Francia. After stabilizing and booming, the mission is easy. Vinlandsaga - C tier, I just don't like it that much. Nostalgia dictates S tier but my feelings say C-D tier. I didn't play it in a long time so I should revisit it, though. Hastings - C tier, average scenario, it's basically: win your part of the map, win water, snipe castle. Manzikert - D tier, boring scenario tbf, just jebait enemy so they open the gates for you and run under the TC. Also, establish trade. First two cities are easy because of the cheese, the last one is about to make as many rams needed for destroying the game and then, again, run under the TC. Byzantines AI acts weird so it doesn't attack and it's stuck somewhere on the map. Enable an option to have 8x speed. It helps a lot because the scenario requires a lot of waiting for resources. Kurikara - C tier, grind mission, I played it long time ago so I don't remember it that much but grind is the old bad. At least you play as Japanese, that's a good thing Cyprus - B tier, longbows ftw!, the start is kinda interesting then longbows win the day. If you have longbows, you don't mind the grind that much. Bapheus - S tier, incredibly fun mission and challenging as well. Even if you don't go for the achievement, you will be heavily pressured anyway and you have to attack at the same time. The only bad thing is Catalan Company's presence is really underwhelming. You almost don't notice their attack. Lake Poyang - D tier, I played it once a long time ago and I hated it. Agincourt - C tier, easily cheesable and no eco mission are no fun for me but you have longbows. It's also tedious considering you basically only have longbows (IIRC you basically have to destroy the castle with longbows because it has Murder Holes) Lepanto - B tier, don't care about the wonder and build a formidable navy instead. Once Turks are no threat, build the wonder with 8x speed on. Kyoto - B tier, another one I don't remember much but I remember I didn't like it that much because of the timer. Noryang Point - A tier, fun mission with Koreans

I feel the problem with York is that the different victory conditions are way too uneven in terms of how easy and fast to accomplish they are. The "build a wonder in yellow's base" one is so overwhelmingly simple compared to the others that choosing anything else pretty much feels like the player is deliberately making things harder for himself just for the sake of it, and the "defeat 5 players" one even requires the player to self-sabbotage the "accumulate 50,000 gold" condition by wasting gold on purpose, otherwise that one will naturally happen first. I think York was a good idea, but the implementation was really clumsy.

Thanks taking the time you put into this video. I totally agree with putting Bapheus into the S tier. It has so much re playability given the various ways you can choose to win. As much fun it may be to see Ornlu the Wolf and the mighty penguin, Vinlandsaga is just too easy and in the end a bit too grindy as well. And York deserves lot better rating (A or maybe even S) given the various ways you can play it -- much like Bapheus. But perhaps it's more a matter of taste since I don't mind big. One way it could be improved is to make a player declare in advance the objective or eliminate winning by collecting gold. How about compiling a list of the most challenging battles? I recall you doing a good video for campaign scenarios, perhaps one for the battles since your on that topic???

It's was pretty great, and I'm sad the mission ended before I could destroy the last factions. A tad on the easy side once you get going, but I prefer this over endless grinds like Dos Pilas or zergfests like Bukkhara. I wish the devs would make another map like that, with some of the new mechanics that have been used in newer campaigns. Like a huge map of France and the surrounding areas during the HYW, where you can ally differents factions depending on your choices.

With the campaigns featuring the Koreans, the newfound Chinese factions, and the Japanese - it's just waiting to happen. I'm saying this because of the East Asian scenarios that are officially made, only Noryang Point allows combat between multiple factions, as in Lake Poyang you are playing as the Chinese, duking it out with other Chinese enemies, and in Kyoto/Kurikara, you are playing as the Japanese.... Duking it out with other Japanese adversaries. Love the reasoning on here - this video is a keeper, considering I actually like the Historical Battles quite a bit.

No challenge cause your base is never really under attack, and you can win this with trash units without any problem so even if you have no gold it's just longer. Galatia I think they're expecting you to think outside the box - I just baited their army and got few units through the gate so I could get to their Town Center (though that wasn't entirely successful). Seeing how many Scorpions were being used and that the area around the gate was a death trap, I aggroed them and then attacked when they were too far away from their defenses (which is histroically how these horse archer civs did fight).

I adored the York and Manzikert scenarios and hated Honfoglalas and Bapheus, but otherwise I broadly agree. Scenarios where you have to strike early and do difficult micro are no fun. Being able to comfortably build a base and take multiple ways to approach challenges is most fun.
@ArutaretiI3 жыл бұрын
In Kyoto you can actually win with a relic victory and it's incredibly easy that way :D All you need to do is transport some siege and 5 monks across the river, wait for the enemy to collect all the relics, break the wall, steal the relics (nobody will try to stop you btw, at least I don't remember any resistance) return to your base and wait for the win.

I just did Manzikert on normal speed on hard. I didn't capture yellow or the Saracen mining camp as I couldn't be fucked waiting for the rams. Took me quite a while to slow push the final town with mangonels, rams and as many cav archers and spears I could possibly field. Definitely D tier.

50k gold is fun on York if you turtle in the north and go around the entire coastline with 50 long boats killing everything and dropping trebs to snipe gold buildings from transports.

Technically, Honfoglalás is NOT the only time you play as Magyars. Dracula 2 and 5 are Magyars scenarios, and considering Dracula is actually commanding Hungarian armies, they aren't placeholders like the Slavs are for the culturally similar Latin Wallachians. I do think Honfoglalás is quite distinct from Dracula though since the former is all about their Magyars as nomadic raiders only reluctantly changing their culture, while in Dracula, Hungary is a fleshed out Christian kingdom defending Eastern Europe from the Ottoman conquests, not to mention you can hire Italian mercenaries in mission 5.

Okay, maybe someone has mentioned this, maybe they haven't. Maybe you found out later. I don't know. I looked and didn't see anything in the comments section, but I have to mention it because it's bothering me. 16:15 That's just... dead wrong... and you can even tell by the dialogue in the Sicilian Campaign, specifically in the first scenario where the Normans clearly come from elsewhere [Note: They come from the western side of the map, west of Italy is the French coast. Cool detail.], and eventually conquer Sicily. The Normans were originally Vikings who raided France (Normans - Northmen) for gold until one of France's kings cornered a bunch of them and offered them lands on the northern coast of France in exchange for not dying and to keep out other vikings from raiding France. This place became Normandy, the land of the Normans. William the Bastard, aka William the Conqueror, was the Duke of Normandy before invading England across the Channel. So, no, Franks are the correct civ, as they are about a century removed from the creation of Normandy. I know this video is 2 years old and you've probably already learned this, but on the off-chance you hadn't I had to say this. Sorry for the rant, but it bothered me so much.
@sykes50003 жыл бұрын
Hey, I like your videos in general, but the York rating was really weird from you. Your criteria were replayability, uniqueness, stories and showcase of civ. I think York scores very high on each of the criteria you laid down... if you make choices subjective that's cool, but then leave the criteria in the beginning. It takes long and your PC can't handle it after an hour is not a good argument I believe. I played York once to get all Gold medals, I chose the 50k Gold version to win. And my PC is 8 years old. Only played it once, but had the most fun out of all scenarios.

Well these are all just my opinions, and we can all feel free to disagree :P I lot of people really seem to like York, which I was completely surprised by. And DE can be weird with some people having lag and others not. Also consider that most of the times I've played York, I've also been recording it, which itself eats up a lot of CPU. And I just find York to be unnecessarily long and boring anyway. But that's just me ofc *shrugs*

Well to be fair in Dos Pillas they probably wanted you to utilize Mayan's Obsidian Arrows for sieging, but damn that didn't age well did it? My favourite was probably either Noryang or Langshan Jiang, however I played them during HD day when, well you know, FE campaigns and scenarios are horrendously grindy and bloated with triggers. I might gonna like York or Kurikara more if I played the DE version, but I'm still wondering why they didn't specify which Minamoto who led the army of mounted samurai, probably Yoshinaka but for people who are familiar with Genpei Wars from pop cultures, they might mistook them as Yoritomo or Yoshitsune, hell the description in HD was about Yoritomo even though he wasn't present there. I was also very annoyed with the fact that you have to keep Minamoto alive in HD, I almost win and decided to let Minamoto have a duel with Taira no Koremori (Kiyomori in HD because lmao idk man, perhaps his grandfather wants to be showcased too) only for him to die because I forgot and let him got swarmed by enemy cav archers.

Kyoto = A ! ☺ I like it so much Did you ever try to capture the reliques from the green KI-Player? for me it was always too short and it is really hard to build economy and fight three opponents at once, if you play on HARD 😧
@Peter-lf6zh3 жыл бұрын
It's odd to me that the longer and more grindy the scenarios are the more ways there are to play them, whereas the shorter ones often don't have any variation. I'd much rather have it be the opposite; I'm much more likely to want to replay a short scennario than a long one.

York is more like a 1 scenario campaign than a battle. Best enjoyed in multiple sittings. assuming the frame rate issue is fixed why pick the shortest strategy every time? Would you pick a strategy that let's you win in 1 minute? aren't you playing to have fun? Why not pick the longest strategy? Definitely the most replayable scenario with all those options
