I don't know why, but about 4 months ago KZbin decided to start recommending me aoe2 videos. This is a game I haven't played for pushing 20 years, but it was a game I bought the n release day in 1999 and that I was utterly obsessed with. I have to say I never even knew there was still a community of any scale for aoe2and how active it still is is quite incredible for such an ancient game. Anyway, here I am some months later, having revived my teenage obsession with aoe2 by purchasing the new DE edition. In the intervening 20 years players like this guy have managed to turn it into a blur of mouse clicks and I'm trying to catch up on how to play at the absolute optimum. I struggle to beat the AI on hard setting in a 1v1 currently...

@@colyvor2283 compare the 21 years that have passed since it came out to the 21 years that preceeded this game. Basically pong was cutting edge back then. In terms of gaming history it's definitely ancient and it's amazing that it is still even playable, never mind that it still has an active community around it

@@davidheseltine85 "In terms of game history"... in terms of "age" as passed time, sure. In terms of game design, I´d say the backend may be ancient, the frontent (user experience) not. Saying "timeless" I talk about concept, balance and the ability to bind players for a long time. AoE2 for sure got it´s updates, but they mostly consist of new civs and maps, sparsely gamechanging improvements. I started playing AoE2 again 3yrs ago after a 10yrs break and besides a few new civs, maps and civ bonuses there was nothing to adapt to. Same with DE now. In fact, I hardly know any RTS that has this wide range of possible expertise while being so much long time fun, wether you´re very skilled or not. Even SC2 and World in Conflict, my other personal favourite RTS, fade beside AoE2.

Tbh I think it's doable. You see how the AI can't deal with 4 archers ? 1 on woodline, 2 on farms, 1 on gold. You could focus your entire play to send archers to all players and block them all. Completely forget making eco or managing anything at home, once you got enough archers out, just full micro on the 7 AIs. You have to send 1 archer to each of them and rotate it at the beginning so it denies several ressources. Shortly after you get more archers and lock all the positions. It's just a very specific type of gameplay that no one ever does, so it probably needs a 20 games practise but it's doable. Edit : might not be doable on hidden map since it requires a hellish amount of scouting. On revealed map though, where you directly see the location of the ressources, is it feasible.

I feel provoked by this video! :D I have just used the same tactic 3 times in a row 1v1 against Medium. When I start killing enemy villagers with 3-5 archers after the same time as him, I have 5 javelin throwers on my neck after seconds! If I then go back and try again, the opponent has twice as much of everything as I do. It's like the PC is cheating!

You only need one or two at most. Maybe one if it’s positioned well. The AI will eventually kill the archer by stumbling into it, otherwise you’d just send one or two archers at each ai and call it a day. Towers are far more resilient and the ai won’t use villagers or even units to take them for a while. Plus at the very least you start with 200 stone which you get at least one tower out of. I can beat three AI on extreme with minor tower pressure in each and I’m nowhere near vipers level.

The only game I beated AI extreme was with a TC drop. If you don't want to delete your own TC go for Cumans, go fast feudal and build your TC in range of his. Quick win. You might be in time to take out a second enemy at the same if you delete your starting TC. If you're up against more AI's, stealing farms can give you a boost.

I just beat an extreme AI with a tower rush, but it was spamming mining camps everywhere by the end and I don't know why. Maybe it is broken? I heard an AI was spamming "wood please" a DauT as well!

So paralyse 2 in FA with archers, take one out with xbow in CA, fight last in imp (0-2-1-1 through the ages). Looks like going against 2 in imp would be next to impossible... So if you're taking 5 on then need to kill that extra either in feudal, meaning 3 lamed with archers which is probably tough to pull off in time (nearly too late with Franks here) or taking 2 out in CA which we saw fail in 3rd attempt. Remember when Viper was ready to try 1v7? :P

2v1 Imperial should be totally possible for him if he walls with a good civ match-up. This AI is terrible at dealing with fortifications, they don't protect their trade, and he should have access to tons of extra resources in defeated bases.

I am not sure if you could do 1v5 with this tacitcs. The population-graphs you showed at the end are cracy. If you would let 2 of them go like this it can be verry bad (see game #3). But what do i know. I bett you already did it on stream :-) I predict, that if you did beat 1v5 you used a different method. maybe simultatnious early aggression vs 4 of them. Nice vid.

I think you can build a fed pressure with 3-4 archers to paralyze them til against 3-4 opponents though. Or am I totally wrong? That makes 1v5 and even 1v6 possible.

If you want to win 1 vs 5, you only have to go with 2-3 archer on 4 of them. Just make it so they can't build a stable and that they cant collect wood and gold! No building and no archer/skirm/pike/change age

You need a civ with a super good early bonus to get more archer faster. Faster gold/wood collection or faster creation time or lower cost. You can even go directly with skirms only to make the worker flee.
