One of the best movies in which we can see the depiction of Stoicism is "Gladiator" (2000), directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. While not explicitly about Stoicism, the character Maximus Decimus Meridius exemplifies many Stoic principles throughout the film. The Gladiator reflects numerous Stoic themes like Endurance and Resilience, Acceptance of Fate, Focus on Virtue and Honor, and Control of Emotions. It's definitely worth watching ❤

it almost is explicit! The original emperor in the movie who was Maximus' friend and Commodus' father, was our boy Marcus Aurelius. The connection is so obvious now, I really did not fully appreciate that movie as a dumb teen who just wanted cool fights with epic music.

I lived my school life pretty lavishly I must say. When I say lavishly, I mean that my travel time was only 10-15 mins by public transport such as auto rickshaw which is pretty popular in my country. I am from India (yes the most populated country in the world as of now). During my school years, I was pretty much a loner and I don't like going out. I love to stay at home and do things peacefully. The weather and the crowd is the thing I hate the most that is why even if my classmates asked me to go with them somewhere, I would start coming up with excuses. Now I'm in 1st year of college. It takes me 2.5hrs to reach the campus. I didn't travel at all so figuring out routes and travelling for more than 4hrs everyday is a drastic change. Also, I have motion sickness so I tend to vomit in buses as well. It doesn't help, even if I eat something or not. (Ofc I eventually take medicine). I decided to explore and change routes so that I don't have to sit through 2hrs holding the bag of my vomit feeling like shit. (Not to mention attending classes after that. The attendance system is pretty strict.) I knew I hated this and wanted to get admission in colleges which are nearby. But this is a great college and I got accepted because of my efforts. I have no complaints about it. While changing routes I came across alot of challenges like missing my ferry, then not being able to catch any bus because people are literally swinging from the entrance. I once missed my first class because I took the wrong bus. Special mention to the crappy weather as well. During these times, I panicked alot and sometimes I would feel like crying because I kept being late and sometimes even missed classes. It has been like this for a month now but I'm slowly adapting. I'm slowly trying to figure out ways how I can travel efficiently, manage self studying, workout and use the time of my travelling to listen to good music, audio books, podcasts etc. I have been listening to Aperture's videos these days and I learn alot from the Stoicism philosophy :)

I’ve been preaching “soundness of mind” for years. Few believe that it’s possible. The concept of “well being” often leaves out the wellbeing of the mind. Imo, soundness of mind overrides physical well-being by leaps and bounds.

Stoicism is so overrated. The Dichotomy of Control is severely limiting. You may have more control than you think. You may have influence on something later that you cannot influence today. Stoicism as a whole is technically a slave's philosophy. There are much better ways to master one's responses without the cartoon-stoicism we see so much of today.
@CorinthianIvory
@CorinthianIvory 4 ай бұрын
I agree that the dichotomy of control is severely limiting. I would offer William Irvine's Trichotomy of Control which emphasizes what is inside our control, what is outside of our control, & what we have some, but not complete control over. This third category is apt to expand & contract depending on the circumstances of our lives. In respect to Stoicism being a slave's philosophy, I would say everyone is subordinate to circumstance to some degree, however I would like to be free from my own demons & impulses

Imagine actually believing there's a one size fits all way of understanding yourself, outside forces, and, how someone responds to those forces. Imagine having such an unknowingly narcissistic belief that another philosophy is way too cartoonish in all its slave like belief doctrines. Glossing over it's a philosophy like another that has worked wonders for many people for 2,000 years. People are different. In the end, what works for some won't even be within understanding for others. I personally don't match full with it. But who am I to look down upon anyone else who swears by it? I'll take that slave minded Marcus Aurelius cartoonish word for it.

It’s not easy to master stoicism in such short time. I have been studying it every morning for a year now and i still feel like i have a lot to learn from it. Stoicism is a mentality; it's a way of life. It's not something you master by reading every stoic text. You could read every single piece of stoic literature and still have learned nothing. On the other hand, a few sentences could be enough to help cultivate the mental and emotional fortitude to withstand anything and everything life throws at you. Don't confuse movement with progress; rocking chairs move, but don't make progress.

Let me tell you how your life can change if you really become a stoic. I started working in a boutique hotel where I live, which is a very small town in Turkey. It is very hard to find jobs here, but easy living standards and nature make them equal. After 2-3 weeks, I realized that the manager is a narcissist, and it was extremely hard work with him. I could quit and become unemployed, but as I said, it's hard to find jobs here, and I have a family to look after. I started learning how narcissism works and how I can deal with it. Now I am happy with my job and seeing every day that narcissist he can't manipulate me. I just focus on my job and taking care of my family. Like Epictetus said, "It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters."

Stoicism is the greatest philosophy to ever exist. The unparalleled wisdom of stoic teachings should be mandatory reading for every single human being on this planet. Even organised religion doesn't compare. The wisdom of the stoics has never been more desperately needed than today. Society is broken. Fundamentally. The vast majority of people are lazy, pathetic, and cowardly. Virtuous behaviour in the form of an honourable and dignified existence is extremely rare to find. Degeneracy and depravity is not only tolerated, but proactively celebrated. Prolonged peace and prosperity created weak men and these weak emasculated men have created the hard times we find ourselves in now. We are a fallen empire. But out of the ashes, strong men will once again rise.
