These are the promises of self-help. And they sound pretty good, right? They sound like who we want to be. Because we’ve become convinced that we are not healthy, not smart, not efficient, not confident. Not happy.

I don't understand the whole voice thing people keep bringing up, I'm here for your thoughtful content and this is great. I've been wondering lately why it feels like I can get better for a little bit, but never keep it up, and I think this video was really helpful in navigating that feeling.

Thank you for this video. For years, I thought I was worse than others. It was so depressing for me that I felt on the edge of life and death (not literally, but my psyche was dying). One day, I decided to enroll in psychology studies. The day before my first classes, I cried, telling myself how worthless I was, how little I mattered. However, after the first classes, I saw something that shocked me - I’m neither worse nor better. I am here and now. I want to live, and I want to change something. Maybe not everything all at once, but step by step. Even my brother's remarks didn’t hurt as much as they used to. I realized that through his "advice," he was expressing his sense of superiority, which used to hurt me, but now it evokes more compassion than pain. Of course, I had many setbacks along the way. I wanted to change my life for the better immediately, but over time, I understood that this isn’t the point. As the saying goes: "Fall down 10 times, but get up 11." Somewhere along the way, I found your channel. I started listening to and watching your content. Your reflections on various topics have helped me more than I can express in words. Now, watching this video, I have finally solidified my belief that it’s the journey that matters, not comparing myself to others. There will always "be" someone "better" and someone "worse," something "good" and something "bad." What’s important is to accept yourself and focus on your own growth.

Well said. For a long time I felt like a failure because every time I would improve myself for a bit, I would end up falling back eventually. We can't constantly improve, because everyone will have bad days. But it's about not letting those bad days convince you that it has to be a precedent. Failures are essential for growth too. It's better to sit through those failures, absorb the information, and go through the coping process. Trying to escape from it is a trap, it is a form of suffering that is there to help us.

If you take a self help book as a manual you are missing the whole point. You read, anything, to find perspective from others, take what you like and dimiss the rest. Like a chat with any friend or relative. Nonetheless, I believe we should be aiming to self-acceptance, most of the times this would save a lot of struggles.

All my life I've been told "You are wrong". Whether or not I do something. Whether or not I say something. So I sit still, far away from everyone & everything, basically I'm wrong for existing. Family, when I had friends they all seem to know the absolute Right thing to do in every instance, and they usually get the supportive words, "They did what the had to do". No matter how distasteful, degenerate or dishonest their words or actions. Yet, little ole problem me is just so wrong in every thought, word or action, Yet I hold my tongue. - And that's still a problem, I should have said something profound, or kind. The few times my words slip in defense It's always met with heavy criticism one way or another. I have become a very quiet stoic person & through my struggles, no one ever calls, texts giving something cheerful- I have, but when seen in public they are not afraid of using destructive words to describe lack of communication even though it goes both ways. So, I sit still, far way from everyone everything. If I'm not there or involved I cannot be the problem. I don't seek attention, I don't crave adoration, I love quiet mornings, nature & animals. Somehow to many people I have to work with or some other public connection, that's weird or a problem. So I sit still.....

I recently talked to a friend about my insomnia that keeps ruining my life, and he said that I should just get tired and that it works for him. But he hasn't got my problems and he sleeps like a baby. ;) I told him "yeah, that works for you, but not for me. At least not all the time. We are different and I have anxiety and ADHD, plus tinnitus. You cannot know what it's like and how to try to solve it unless you have it yourself. We are all different." At first he seemed offended, but after he thought about what I said he said "true, I cannot know what it's like to feel like you do... I can only presume based on my own experiences". Generally, some things can work for many people, but never for all people. It doesn't hurt to try, of course. Giving up hurts.

- Think for yourself, don’t let something or someone dictate your life for you - Buying self-improvement books, courses, or coaches won’t be the solution. It may help but it won’t completely change your life or give you that happiness you crave. Only you can do that. - We are all different, and will experience different things. In the end do what YOU believe is best for you. - If it makes you miserable, don’t do it. - In conclusion, find the self help community as a way to gain knowledge from others and the world. Not as instructions where each step needs to be followed. There is no right or wrong way in life. We all live different lives so follow your intuition. Live as your own unique self and always THINK for urself.

One particular idea just came into my mind after watching this. Going with the principle "less is more", cut off all the inputs of new information (delete social media, stop buying books and new seminars) and work with what you got currently. Work out all the tools you have, a few at a time and see what works for you and what doesn't. And then, add slowly to them. You might realize that re-reading a book or slowly working with a particular self-help tool will give you new insights or you will just realize it's totally pointless. The reason why the self help industry has gotten on the same level as others is because of the instant dopamine shot which makes us addicted to buying the next self help "pill"...

Upon hearing the news of Jerusalem, Nehemiah might have applied some self help technique to handle his despair and sadness allowing him to function in his career as cupbearer to the king.. In which case he may not have gone to Jerusalem and moved others to rebuild the wall. Parents of dead addicts might find solace in some mindfulness toward freewill and not be moved to an anger for action to help fix their locality. Lover your anger, use your horror, don't try to do away with you. Live you. And in good times rejoice and the story will be your story. Maybe not a long, armchair ridden story, but a real raw human story. Bless The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Bless ALL.

I saw a quote I liked yesterday, I workout because I love my body not because I hate it. People do a lot of things as a form of compensation for not feeling good enough. Once you see it it's everywhere. The millionaire and the homeless person might both have the same belief that they are unworthy. The millionaire is convincing their self and others that they Are good enough. While the homeless have succumbed to the belief and given up. Same core belief though. I find that interesting. The why's matters imo

I've always thought this to myself. Why do people turn to self-improvement programs to improve themselves? It's literally called self-improvement, not get help from other strangers that tell you they know how to get better and then take all your money while doing it. If you really want to improve yourself, then do exactly that, improve yourself, find the problems yourself, understand your problems yourself, and find solutions to the problems yourself.

self help 'gurus' are similar to mega church leaders and leaders of the 'prosperity' movement of Christianity, in my opinion. behind the shiny image and charisma and seduction, it's all about making $$. people who GENUINELY wanted to help others "self-help" (or in the case of Christianity, want to bring you closer to God) should NOT be ultimately motivated by money. thats my opinion anyway. also, happiness is a side-effect. if you are trying to be happy, you are most likely not going to be happy.

Ok but on the flip side, we live in a world where money is required to survive and everyone knows if you're good at something, you shouldn't do it for free.. Should money be the motivator? No, but I don't think reaping finances takes away from those willing to help others.

Having watched a bunch of self help videos lately the upload time of this video feels harrowingly unfortunate. 😂
