@@samtayylor7259 I think a lot of people underrate how much of a thing The South Coast Derby is. Probably because it's not exactly been a regular fixture because baring a few seasons over the past 40 years the two clubs have been in different divisions. But that's also part of the reason it's so intense. Because it doesn't happen that often it's a big thing when it does happen and it can give one set of fans bragging rights for a number of years. Throw in the urban historical myth about the dockers strike (Yes it is a myth that never happened) that many people on both sides still believe and makes for a really heated rivalry.

As a Portsmouth fan, Portsmouth is statically the bigger club in terms of history. More FA Cups, more Championship trophies and a much larger reputation for support. Dropped 4 leagues in 5 years (due to financial issues) and ended the season with a full stadium and the club owned by the supporters.. slowly working our way back to the top flight.. Sunderland and Newcastle have hated each other for over 400 years. It started in the english civil war. Sunderland were parliamentarian and Newcastle were royalist. So we got the coal trade rights then became the biggest ship building town in the world. Upto two thirds of all merchant ships were built on the wear... ps it's called Tyne wear derby because of the rivers the two city's are built on. Then in later years it has all been down to politics and just out right hatred. Sunderland and Newcastle are 12 miles apart but are completely different politically and socially we even have different ascents. In my opinion it is the biggest derby in England.

There is some hilarious footage from the TV a few years ago at Fratton Park. All the Southampton fans are sitting down being well behaved and singing "oh when the saints..." and "come on you saints", then it cuts to a rabbid Pompey mob screaming "You've never won a Fu****g thing, (after Pompey won the FA cup in 2008), "We Fu***** Hate you Scummer C***s" etc. All with so much venom. The police will close all the roads and you have to use specific trains or train stations Police will do everything they can to control the crowds Villa Vs baggies ( west brom) is another really fierce derby as the teams are so close to one another stadium wise. On a slight tangent the term derby is after the 19th Earl of Derby whose Knowsley estate had the towns of St Helens and Wigan at each end and the rugby league matches between the two were named the derby after the Earl. These matches tended to be quite aggressive and the name spread to other intense usually local rivalries not just in rugby league. The 19th Earl of Derby being quite the sports fan also had one of the biggest horse races of the year named after him the Derby at Epsom.

I have to say that you're wrong. That is how the term for the horse racing Derby comes from but in terms of rivalries it's not true. Originally football was a game where either 2 Town or 2 sides of a town had to get the ball from one side to another. There was no rules in this, there is still a version of this called shrovetide in Ashbourne,Derbyshire. Anyway in a particular game against 2 villages in Derbyshire several people were killed because it was so fierce. From this a rivalry was coined the term 'Derby' after this event.

Whereas there's clear evidence of the Earl of Derby having things named after himself. Rugby League is probably left out of explanations due to it being such a niche sport.

yes, the Bradford fire sticks in my memory as I am a Birmingham city fan who went to my first ever match at St Andrews that day. We did not have mobile phones back then. At St Andrews fighting broke out and a wall collapsed killing a kid that same day, I saw it and cried all the way home. I thought things couldn't et any worse but then I got home, the news was on and that is when I learnt about the Bradford fire.

West ham v Millwall is the most violent derby also watford v luton the last time they played each other with fans there were organised fights at 3 different train stations also in the town centre and inside the ground and outside the ground but there isn't much footage of that Derby unfortunately.

Leeds have better fans than Derby imo, that’s probably the reasoning behind it. Though over the last few seasons Leeds have been pushing for promotion (which they got) a lot more than Forest and probably more so than Derby too, so it feels more exciting to beat Leeds as they’ve been a better team in the Championship than both Forest and Derby.
