If given proper opioid medication for the first week, you will recover twice as fast. The leg is capable of standing and walking almost immediately but the pain holds you back. The first knee for me was absolute hell but the second time, with enough pain killer on board, it was much easier, even cracking jokes with the physio people. I’m 70 years old. I wish Doctors would learn how to give opioids when needed but don’t let the patient talk you into more than 2 weeks or 2 and 1/2 weeks with tapering off. I got out of hospital after a 2 1/2 day stay yesterday and am strong enough to feed my dog, which requires bending to my toes, make my own meals and do my exercises. The doctor in the video is correct, the patient must do pre-surgery exercises and be strong enough to be able to recover quickly or not bother. No one has to help me like the last time. I was awake throughout the surgery because of spinal freezing. It was fine. In 2016, this fine surgeon rebuild and fused my spine, bu I can not tell at all that this was done. This did however take a longer time to heal from. Complete healing from my back fusion was almost a year. Thank you to all the wonderful Doctors and Nurses out there!

This is inspiring as I'm going in for knee replacement in June here in Canada. I'm losing weight as asked for by the doctor and doing 15 miles a day on my exercise bike. I can't walk far due to the pain of the knee right now, but the bike works fine. I don't like being down so I'm glad it doesn't take much time to get back up. Thankyou doctor for your wise words.

@@juanitasullivan3372 Oho! That answers my question about whether you have someone at home to help. Rehab will help you over the initial hump, so no worries. I was alone after going home the day after surgery (well, friends helped get things for me I didn't know I would need) and it was no fun, but it all worked out anyhow. One thing I read...and found to be totally true...we can't measure recovery from TKR in days, but in weeks and months. So don't be discouraged that you don't seem to be getting better day to day. You are, you just won't realize it until a week has passed. Funny, that, but you'll see. ;) Again, best of everything. The outcome WILL be awesome after the aggravation is gone.

Thank you for this video - and for having it in English. I go in for my first knee in less than 2 weeks. I have every intention of the most rapid possible recovery. Of course I understand it is up to me how I handle my recovery phase. I even have therapeutic yoga positions (with chair) ready to go from a teacher who is well versed with knee patients. Hoping (and planning) to minimize narcotics and maximize natural remedies (anti-inflammatories) Giving myself a strict anti-inflammatory diet as well, to support the process. @@smileytow1925 Hi! How nice of you to enquire. I appreciate it. I had mine done on April 9th. It's just two weeks, now. PT is going well and every day a little easier to walk, bend, exercise. My biggest challenge, I think, is my body's reaction to the pain meds. They make me not want food. I'm eating because I must. I also need the pain meds less often, so I think it will all work out. I look forward to an unswollen happy knee! How is it going with you? You had yours one week ahead of me.

I had pt today, only go one time a week. She said I was bending right where I was suppose to be. At the right degree. I take one regular strength Tylenol at 9am and at 3pm, then at 9pm and 3am I take a 1/2 of 5mg/325mg oxy/Tylenol combo plus one regular strength Tylenol. ( more probably help me sleep, although not sure if it really helps. Last night I put two pillows between my legs that seemed to help. I am not a back sleeper, but my knee wants me to be. ( side sleeper!) a whole pain pill makes me feel yucky. I am not a pill taker, other then vitamins. You are right! I am one week ahead of you! It was my left knee that was done. I think next week I will drive myself to pt. My husband is going through radiation for prostrate cancer. His first treatment was the the 10th ( day after your surgery) we are taking care of each other! ( we are both 61) keep doing what you are doing! Maybe try cutting your pain pills in half. They still work and you don’t feel bad. Thanks for answering! I haven’t found anyone having it done near when I had it done. Continue to heal!

Tomorrow will be two weeks since my total knee replacement. am still on a walker and am in so much pain I cry everyday. Tomorrow I will get my 3rd and last prescription of Percocet. Even taking that I am in pain. How are you doing now, Tami? I remember that 2 weeks out from my TKR, I was still in so much pain...and it was getting very old by that time! It sure takes time, doesn't it?! Even at one month, although certainly better, I still felt half crippled. Two months was better. And by three months, I was pretty much done with what could be called pain. And my strength was building up. Whew!! And, yes, it's still healing at 5 months, but now it's awesome and not at all painful.

@@WhiteTiger333 Thank you for asking me how I am. It's been almost 7 weeks and I am still in so much pain. I've been very depressed sitting home all day just icing and elevating and doing PT. I thought by now my pain would subside. I'm still awake at night. This has been a horrible experience. The worst thing is I have to go back to work in less than six weeks and I stand all day. I'm a hairdresser so I'm worried I'm not going to be ready to go back to work. If I stand longer than a minute my leg swells and turns red and hot. So there you go. :( I'm glad you don't have much pain anymore. I guess some people have a good experience and others not so much.

By the time I could go home, I was just about biting off ten penny nails, there was so much pain. And that was with oxycodone in my system. I went back to work full time at 6 weeks, but was quite uncomfortable for a week or two longer before it really got better enough to not be wincing and inwardly whining! If I had still been in direct care, and on my feet all day, I would have needed the full 3 months. Definitely the 2nd month and a half was a lot better than the 1st month and a half. Sending prayers that your healing will proceed well in the next 6 weeks!

@@queenkami7856 It can be addictive for some people, yes. I got a great tip from someone else about making the narcotic pain killer last longer. If you have a pill cutter, try cutting the pill in half. It still works. I found that to be true for my oxycodone. That way you can still take it per schedule instead of putting up with more pain for the sake of spreading out the doses. (If it's a capsule, that won't work, of course).

I came here to see if anything has changed. I had my L Knee replaced 5 years ago & there were many things that I was not advised of at that time. The first being scar tissue. You must keep up painful exercises FOREVER. Failure to do so results in stiffness, muscle loss & memory. Your brain actually forgets how to walk right. You will NEVER be able to kneel again. I can't put on socks & shoes without assistance. Your body will always be subject to infection & antibiotics will ALWAYS be needed for simple teeth cleaning etc. I know & understand that this procedure does affect people differently. Mine has been hell but I was in pain back then & I am still in pain today. I am trying not to be negative but I don't think they tell you all the pitfalls to having this operation. A knee replacement will be a life-changing event & in my case, it has been a negative event. PS I walk with a cane now.

I had my surgery Sept 5th, almost 3 weeks ago. Sorry I had it done and I wouldn't do it again. Granted it's only been barely 3 weeks, but my swelling is getting worse, my exercises are not progressing due to the swelling like they were the first week after surgery. I ice as much as I'm allowed and it does nothing. I think I'm in trouble with this.

You're not in trouble. It's brand new. The knee is about the longest surgery to heal. I super recommend checking out Bonesmart.org. It gives a great perspective on what to expect and will help calm the worry that you are not seeing the quick progress you hoped to see, and calm the anxiety about not getting flexion due to the swelling. Are you seeing a PT? Also, are you getting a followup with your surgeon? Just asking because they know the difference between swelling due to lymph and healing, and an infection. But really, my understanding is that if you had an infection, you would be feverish, ill, the knee would be very red, angry, etc. But swollen at this new stage - yeppers. (I called it my elephant leg). A complete pain, but nothing for it but persevere. It will improve.

@@WhiteTiger333 I'm in Nova Scotia and we have VON here. That is visiting nurses. They have been coming by 2-3 times a week. They've been changing the dressing and removed the staples last week. It was like day and night when those staples came out. The flexiblity was so much better. Now it's like the staples are right back in again. The nurse was here Saturday and she wasn't concerned. I guess it's just me. Seems like I progress with my PT and then I digress. Ugh. Doing PT 3 times a day. I stayed with friends the first two weeks after getting out of the hospital and returned home this past Friday night. I can walk around without walker or cane a short distance at this point in time.

@@juanitasullivan3372 Oh, good! (That you are being seen, that is - not just on your own). It takes much longer than we thought it would! :) The Bonesmart site helped me so much to not get discouraged by what I thought was too long and "I must have done something wrong". It is not just an information site, it's also a forum of folks from all over the world who have had the surgery and are recovering. The forum is set up and monitored by two retired orthopedic nurses in the UK. We are encouraged to set up a profile and share our experience with post-op. It lets us know how common and quite real our concerns, pain, etc are, as well as how long to expect to be out of pain, swelling, stiffness...longer than we think or want! My PT just laughed at me when I insisted something must be wrong. Now I know he was right! But definitely for the first month, at least, I felt mightily sorry for myself and wondered what in the world I had gotten myself into.

I've had knee pain on and off for about 6 years. Have recently lost 46 pounds. Unfortunately the weight loss didn't help my discomfort but it did get me new clothes! I am 69 years old and have had various surgeries in my life. It's been recommended to me to have a total knee replacement. The thought of having this done absolutely terrifies me. As mentioned, I'm in some pain but for the most part, I can deal with it, although an MRI showed that I have no cartilage in my left knee. I guess my question to those who have been kind enough to post comments is, if you were me, would you do this? Thanks to all. BTW, I have a history of blood clots and will be seeing an internist to determine if surgery is too much of a risk for me.

lovesmusic36 Obviously you need to follow your doctor’s advice as it sounds as though you have special medical conditions that make any surgery iffy. But if you get a surgery go ahead, don’t be scared of total knee replacements. I had both knees replaced in less than a year (My last 3 months ago). And I’m now walking without limping or pain for the first time in five years. I told my surgeon that if I had a third knee, I’d have it done too. My advice is to begin pre surgery knee exercises as soon as you can. I started exercises for my 2nd knee 3 months before my surgery and it really paid off. And after surgery, be consistent in your physio. It takes a lot of time; for me, 3 times a day for 45 minutes a session. Gradually the physiotherapist reduces the number of times per day, but you need to continue doing some exercises for a year following surgery. Good luck!
