This is my second build of the great Revell Apollo Saturn V model kit in 1/144 scale. I built this in 2019 as a Christmas present for my parents who are - just like me - great fans of aviation and space flight. They actually witnessed the first moon landing of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969 live on TV.
I have built this model a little different than my first one. I used different colors, based on actual Saturn V photos and deviated from the build process shown in the manual. Of course the old Revell kit has its flaws and shortcomings, but once more I think the finished model is pretty impressive on the shelf.
I appreciate any Comments as well as Likes and Subscriptions to my channel. I consider myself an advanced beginner in the world of scale model building and I am doing my best to improve my skills and techniques. I will try to upload new build videos regularly, so stay tuned! Cheers and enjoy!

Excellent Job. You make it look so easy. I attempted to build this very model about three years ago. The required detail was somewhat overwhelming as I am in my late 70s and my eyesight isnt the best. It came out just OK not great. It is a great model but it can not be rushed. I use to work at Kennedy Space Center on the Saturn 5 Apollo Program back in the 70s on Complex 39A and this model brought back memories.

I lived very close to the cape and watched the launch if Apollo 11 from 15 miles away. It was awesome. I love your channel. I have a Saturn V in storage along with about 300 other model kits that have been waiting patiently in storage for almost 20 years. Watching you build yours makes me want to get back to building... Thank you.

Thank you so much for your awesome comment, I greatly appreciate it! Watching and hearing the Saturn V take off must have been a once in a lifetime experience. I was only born half a year after Apollo 11, but this greatest adventure of mankind has always fascinated me since I was a little boy. I always dreamed of visiting the US and watch a Space Shuttle launch in person but I never managed to do so. I am glad you like my model builds - when I started out with this hobby last year I never would have expected such a great response like yours. Thanks again and stay safe! All the best from Germany, Oliver/RWO

@@RWOModels It was very awesome to watch. You would have loved watching the space shuttle launches. If you were close enough you could feel them. The human side of it can not be expressed in words. To see those massive powerful things go up knowing that real people were in them.... Maybe one day you can make it to the U.S. and visit the Air and Space Museum and see the actual capsules. Stay safe as well. i will keep enjoying your builds.

I am 62, Being a kid watching the Mercury and then Apollo space programs was very exciting, not just the spectacular launches, but especially the televised splash downs and recovery of the astronauts and capsule .It may have been a juvenile fallacy but it made me very proud to be an American. My father was serving in the USAF working on the Century Series Convair F-106 Delta Dart Interceptor for ADC (Air Defense Command). I like your work, used to be a modeler from age 8 into my late 30's but got out of it and concentrated more on my drawing and painting where I won many awards in shows. Judges did not like my aviation drawings lol but they liked my skills and details, just not the subject matter ha ha. Did an Elk the Next year and won Best of Division and Best of Show .... go figure.

Hi Dale, thanks for sharing your story! I'm ten years younger than you so I missed Mercury, Gemini, Apollo etc. but I still remember how excited I was when I watched the first Space Shuttle mission touching down when I was 11. ☺️ I can only imagine how exciting and amazing it must have been to witness the Apollo missions and actually watching men walking on the Moon. Still makes me speechless today... I only came across modeling in my late 40s. Had a serious accident five years ago and felt I needed something to calm down my mind and spend time with stuff I really like. It's like a kind of self-therapy and helps me a lot. All the best to you, greetings from Germany, Oliver/RWO

Nice build! Is sanding the seams make part connect stronger and need any tool after sanding it?
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 2 жыл бұрын
Common polystyrene glues like Revell Contacta or Tamiya Extra Thin Cement usually "weld" the parts together very well without additional sanding. Be careful though to remove paint or grease from the surfaces you want to glue together and only use as much glue as really necessary. Thanks!

Beautiful work! Have you ever built the Airfix Saturn V? If so, how would you compare it to the Revell model? I've read that both have some minor inaccuracies but I'm wondering which is the better kit to buy. Thanks for your video!
@RWOModels
@RWOModels Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I can't tell you anything about the Airfix kit since I haven't had it in my hands yet. Would definitely be interesting to compare them side by side! I've built two of the Revell Saturn Vs, and yes, the kit certainly has a few flaws since it's pretty old. Of course you can add tons of additional details to make it look more realistic, which I didn't. Nevertheless the finished models look stunning on the shelf. 👍 Thanks for watching! 🙂

If you get a recent Airfix Saturn V, they have fixed the taper on the adapter at the top of the third stage and provided a properly scaled service module that is, I believe, block 2 style… The command module is comedically undersized, though.

I’ve never built a model of this caliber, to attach the parts, is glue used for each part? Additionally, is using spray paint a bad idea? Thank you! Nice build!
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. As you might have seen on my channel I have in fact built two of these models, the first one being the first plastic model I ever built. I wanted a nice Saturn V model, saw the Revell 1/144 kit and was confident I could build it if I only was patient enough. After all the paint scheme is very basic with uniform, rectangular white and black areas, and basically no weathering is really needed. So I bought the recommended Revell colors, glue, a hobby knife, sanding paper, masking tape and a few paintbrushes and followed the steps in the build manual. Pretty soon I realised that I was not very good at brush painting, the surfaces looked rough and it was very time consuming. So I decided to buy a cheap airbrush system for the large white and black areas. At first it was a mess, I had no idea how to dilute the paint, which pressure I should use etc. But I kept being patient and eventually got a decent, still impressive looking Saturn V model. I only use acrylic paints for my models and to be honest I have no idea if spray paint is suitable or if it is too aggressive in some way. What I found to be challenging about the build was the fit of some of the large parts for the first and second stages. They need considerable sanding and filling if you don’t like large gaps and seams on your model. Sorry for my lengthy answer but maybe I could help you a little bit. Greetings from Germany, Oliver

@@saskue1842 Hey Ryan - how's the build coming along? Are you done yet? And if I may offer a comment on spray paint, or "rattle cans" (the sound they make when you shake them!). You can use them in many areas of model building. The biggest drawback is you have NO control of pressure or amount of paint that comes out. If you are painting the fuselage of an airplane, the hull of a battleship or something else that's large, a spray can can work. But for fine details; cockpits and such, and airbrush is the way to go. Yes, they cost more, it's more work to use, and it's a pain to clean up... but if you want a really good-quality paint job, you need an airbrush. BUT - you don't have to start out with one. Do what you can, with what you have. Then grow your skills as you add tools. I hope this helps give you a better understanding of a difficult subject. Best of luck in your modeling, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! And keep watching Oliver, he's doing some really good work!

Thanks! To be honest I can't quite remember all the exact colors I used... I mainly use Vallejo Model Air and Vallejo Metal Colors, and for the gold paint on the Lunar Module I had an old sample of Revell Aqua Gold metallic 94 which was awful to use. The whole model was primed with Vallejo Surface Primer, I diluted all paints with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner. Vallejo White 71.001, Black 71.057, Gunmetal Grey 77.720, Aluminium 77.701 is all I remember at this time, sorry... Hope this helps anyway... Thanks for watching!

What paint scheme did you follow? I am interested because yours resembles more accurately the actual Saturn v’s that went to the moon, however the instructions give the paint scheme of earlier test Saturn v’s. I would really like to know so I can paint mine like yours. Thanks :)

Hi Luca, thanks for your comment. It is indeed pretty obvious that the actual Saturn Vs looked a bit different from Revell‘s instructions and product photos, so I studied a lot of Apollo 11 pictures on the internet, mostly on Wikipedia (please see links below), and tried to imitate the color scheme after these pictures. The black areas are all pretty simple and rectangular, so it was not too difficult. However, I do not have any precise original data or measurements so I’m afraid my paint scheme is not accurate down to the last inch. I hope I could help you anyway. Enjoy the build! Thanks for watching! It took me exactly one month to complete the model, from half an hour per day to maybe two or three hours. I am not the fastest builder. :) If this is the first model kit it could be challenging for a 12 year old. Some parts do not fit too well out of the box and need some extra work. The characteristic black and white color scheme looks pretty simple but it requires thorough masking that you have to figure out for yourself (there are no stencils included in the kit). Requires patience to build such a model... :) Greetings from Germany, RWO/Oliver
