Oil paint dries faster when you use a medium, most people use liquin. It makes the paint spread easier and as a bonus it dries faster. Also different colors dry at different rates, titanium white takes the longest. Also oil paint polymerizes or something like that it does not "dry" it more sets up. Because of this you cant really speed it up with a hair dryer or something, but this does mean you can set it in a closed off space and it will still dry, like in a drawer, or container.
@zackypoohplays87925 жыл бұрын
@green shovel not really, I use a pallet with a lid and the paint stays usable for 3-5 days, if its straight out of the tube. You can reactivate it to some degree but then it gets kinda chunky and has dried bits mixed it.
@zackypoohplays87925 жыл бұрын
@green shovel from everything I know, your not supposed to. Oil and water don't mix, so liquin and linseed oil are the only things I've ever heard of mixing in. linseed oil does the same as liquin. There are now somehow water based oil paints, or water mixable, idk anything about them.

you could always dilute the oil with non-toxic solvent. It ends up acting very similar to watercolor when you do that. They also sell fast-drying or slow-drying oil medium, which acts like a solvent. I just use cheap essential oils that i buy in bulk online as a solvent(the original oil paint solvent before the oil industry took over and started producing mineral spirits and turpentine). I will also use straight walnut oil(i use walnut oil paints instead of linseed) as a solvent if the piece is small enough to finish in one day. Extra tip, if you squeeze out too much oil, you can suck the extra back in through the tube by gently squeezing the tube in a certain way(might take practice). When you get the hang of oils, you will start using less oil when you paint. I only use about half a fingernail amount of oil per color per painting session, and i only use the primary colors and white, so that is barely any paint.

I have a set of Cobra water mixable oil paints. What's nice about these is you can use water to thin the paint out (like acrylics) and build up thinner layers, also I've noticed they dry faster than conventional oils. With that being said they still perform more like an oil than an acrylic and using solvents work better with them. Try them out again using water or try the cobra mediums.

Ok, so I haven't made it to the end of the video yet, but I think it would look AMAZING if once the abstract piece was dry, you used it as a background to another painting! You could paint directly over it, and attempt to even out the texture just where you were adding characters and/or stuff, OR you could make a there dimensional watercolour piece, and place that over the really awesome abstract piece. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE your abstract painting as is, but u just have so many ideas on how to bring it to an entirely new, insane, potentially amazing level!

I love these paintings you did! They are so cool :D I've stopped tracking everything except for art. I want to keep it going for a while until I can manage to get up to 1 hour each day on average. I thought that was what I was doing, but yea, I am nowhere close :C My issue is that I can't seem to be able to spend more than 40-1h in one sitting. So, I am now trying to build this up slowly to at least have the 1 hour be the minimum. Last week was terrible for me, I only managed about 2 hours... Tracking this has truly opened my eyes though. I really believed I was spending way more time on art! It's going to be a long process to spend more time on it, but I feel like I can do it! And you can, too :D

Since those are water mixable oil paints you don't have to worry as much about the crazy ventilation issues, as that usually comes from the mediums you mix into the paint, like turpentine. As for disposing of them, unless you're using specific toxic pigments (which applies to ALL paints, even watercolor) you should be absolutely fine disposing of your paints. They're just pigments and binder, they aren't inherently more harmful than any other kind of paint, it's just the Cadmiums and any other specifically labeled pigments that are considered toxic if consumed, and they're used in most kinds of paint anyway. What makes oil paint "toxic" to use is the medium used, because of the fumes, but nowadays there are even lots of traditional oil mediums that are much less toxic than turpentine. Here's a good article explaining the differences between regular oils and water mixable oils! willkempartschool.com/water-mixable-oils-vs-traditional-oils-for-solvent-free-oil-painting/
@PaechesLenore3 жыл бұрын
thank you for sharing! i enjoy both paintings. the abstract one looks like you put a red blur filter on something blue that you can almost see if you squint hard enough. and the little elf making its way through the purple field under the pink sky seems like it has a story to tell. i know i'm over a year late to this video, but if you haven't done it yet, i am curious how you would interpret, and would totally watch a live stream of you following a bob ross video!!! perhaps make a more traditional bob ross to add a character or 1000 to later [also with oil paint] after the background dries.
