In the makeup community, traditionally “x blindness” was a term used for the eyebrows to insinuate that the wearer isn’t aware of a certain feature that’s (typically) overdone or weird looking because they’ve regulated it over time or trends are pushing for a certain feature that society just accepted verbatim, generally without making the necessary unique specifications that enable it to look suitable on most people. Blush blindness is when blush becomes over exaggerated to everyone else, but it’s harder for the wearer to realize that the blush is overdone, a weird color, an odd placement, one variable is always just off that went unchecked by the wearer and tends to look abnormal because of excessive repetition and exposure

​@@avasava7720 I think you’re missing the very obvious point the commenter is making here, that the term “blindness” isn’t apt in this case because the blush is being worn this way on purpose. Your definition is faulty as it implies that it’s somehow “wrong” to wear your blush in that way, to exaggerate it or wear an unconventional cheek color, when in reality people are doing it as a stylistic choice. Makeup is supposed to be fun. Live a little, loosen up and slap pigment all over your cheeks.

Couldn't have put it better. I'm 42 and I've always loved excessive blush, I'm not going to look back on it and be embarrassed. I look at old pictures and think, I should have worn more blush. 😂 I used to let people asking if I had a fever deter me, but I stopped caring because life is too short to not do what makes you feel good.

@@genevieveveI don’t believe it is to drag women down. It is most definitively about making people hop to the next trend and consume more, never let consumers settle with one look. It’s marketing 101, make people love a product, then make them think it’s out and something else is in, and the cycle repeats on and on. Why? Because it obviously works. Lots of women participate and gladly open their wallets for the next viral thing. It’s the same with clothing, interior design, anything. The ones who’re voicing these expressions are the same people who wants to sell us something new, influencers etc, whom are most often women themselves.

One thing I’ve heard that stuck with me, if someone has a “problem” fixable within 5 minutes or less tell them discretely( zip fly undone, shoelaces untied, spinach on teeth, toilet paper on shoe, lipstick on teeth) then they can fix it . If it’s not fixable in 5 minutes ( heavy makeup, hair color/style, choice of outfit that isn’t counter to dress code ) keep your silence. Their choice of self expression does not need to please anyone other than themselves.

Life can get kind of shitty. Do we have to make it shittier by telling people they'll regret their blush? We just need to let people have fun and enjoy themselves and their products. I agree. I got up an hour early every morning during the 80’s to make my pin straight hair conform to whatever the style was that year. It was fun and I felt pretty. I got my first higher end brushes at the department store in 1984 and they lasted for years. It was all about the trends and the fun of changing your look! Have fun with it. @@jimenapes5696Blush, and all other face/base products are having a moment due to the pandemic… Think about it; we spent literally 2 entire years covering up the bottom half of our faces, and another 2 years going back & forth with masking… Now that we feel confident it’s behind us, we’re pulling out all our blush, and replacing what we may have thrown away… Lips had their moment in that limbo phase, because we felt more comfortable buying inexpensive products that may go off, but now we’re more confident in spending more on cheeks…

I agree - the "blindness" is funny when reflecting upon how trendy we wore/wear our makeup. I will never forget that in 2016 a male friend, who knew nothing about makeup, looked at me and said. "Your cheek looks wet!" To me the “___ blindness” phrase would be better used if you are so into the beauty trend that you think you look awful WITHOUT doing it. I think that’s the funniest part to look back on anyway, but it’s not really for someone else to tell you you have! During that same time period I ALWAYS wore wide Blair Waldorf headbands to the point where I thought I looked really weird without them. To everyone else I was probably just participating in a trend but they had me in this weird delusion where I couldn’t go out without one. The “blindness” that I think people are going to truly regret in the future is the over-abundant filler. Like you said, makeup washes off at the end of the day. Filler doesn’t. It doesn’t even dissolve in a lot of cases. There are loads of videos from medical professionals on KZbin showing that. People are permanently disfiguring themselves (and spending thousands of dollars to do it) for a trend.

I used to have eyebrow blindness, but it's because my eyesight is pretty bad so before I started wearing contacts, I had to take my glasses off when doing my makeup. I had to stick my face so close to the mirror that I couldn't see myself that well. And when my glasses were back on, the rim covered my brows partially so I never quite realised how bad I'd been filling in my brows 😭

I'm only in the beginning of this video but wanted to comment already: Recently saw a woman saying she was a victim of the "white shadow under the eyebrow blindness" from the 90s. She looked STUNNING with it. It's so sad that people look back on these trends and cringe, while they objectively rocked that trend and only a few people took it overboard (and we already thought it was overboard at the time, and even so, who cares as long as the person likes it) Also love the new background. I think that having bold blush is more paletable now with the decline of eyeshadow. The average makeup wearer has been “taught” to focus on one feature so inevitably if my eyeshadow is now a soft wash of neutral brown it makes sense for me to have my blush POP. When eyeshadow was the focus everything else was more toned down. IMO

I have always always loved a heavy blush look, even in periods where most people were skipping blush entirely. Blush has always been my favorite makeup product. I really don’t think this one is going to be too cringey or funny to look back on - it is one of THE oldest makeup products to exist and has gone through many eras of heavy application. From the 18th century French court to the 1980s - heavy blush is just ICONIC. It seems to me we were way overdue for a heavy blush trend anyway. This specific look you’ve done IS editorial and in my opinion, timeless!

I'll never watching someone's video and feeling the need to leave nasty comments. Especially when they start it out with something akin to "Not to be mean, but". I saw a comment on a video recently where someone said something about they liked the video but they couldn't stand the person's laugh and it made the video hell for them to watch. Then if they "fixed" it they'd get a subscribe from them. Just absolutely no shame in telling them if they change something about themselves then they will be rewarded with a random stranger's attention. Having been born in the 60's and being young all through the 60's, 70's and 80's, and a young mom in the 90's, I watch these makeup youtubers with a mixture of fascination and sometimes horror. I have daughters your age and wouldn't let them watch beauty content when they were young due to the overconsumption and consumerism. The amount of makeup purchased now is sheer insanity to anyone of my era. That said, I love your channel. You are a lovely, articulate young woman and I think you have interesting content. I have hated some of these trends. The eyebrows....just, no. But, I love blush. I was a teen and young woman in the 80's. We wore a lot of blush! And it was really pretty! There was no "project pan" in those days. No one bought more makeup than they used, so everything was used up in about three to six months, although I did receive an Ultima ll gift with purchase one year for Christmas which I loved and used for years.😊 Anyhow...just wanted to say, wear blush and carry on!

I remember the blush looking like a dark dramatic line across the cheek and that began at the very end of the 1970s in the disco era. Then in the 1980s it got bright and pear-shaped. It was supposed to look glam with very styled hair, but it overwhelmed the face. Not a fan. 😂

I remember the dark, dramatic line, in the hollows of cheeks, like Olivia Newton John wore. I didn't love the blush so much, but she was gorgeous. I don't remember anything pear shaped. What I remember is a sort of triangle coming straight out and then up the cheekbone. I was surprised in the 90's when my girls' magazines said to put blush on the apples of your cheeks, because that was so not a thing. It has been interesting to watch the changes.

I’m so glad that I’m a Gen X! Not having to grow up with the pressure of social media constantly putting girls and women down. We at least had a chance to grow some self-confidence without that added pressure. ( it’s the same for boys/men ) I’ve reached the age of “ I don’t give a f*** “, I put on the amount of blush, mascara or highlighter that I want and feel like! 💕

I remember about a decade ago urban decay had these really powder blushes in really unique shades and I had them all. It was the best formula too, I could wear a bright red and a pale peach and a purple and bright orange and I looked good in all of them because the formula was so nice and buildable. I was so sad when they were discontinued. They really were ahead of their time with those. Anyone else remember them? They had highlighters in the same packaging that were also amazing. I miss the pink shade Aurora it was so perfect

Good points. No one talks about famous people from the 1940s, '50s, '60s, etc., and says they were "whatever" blind. They just think they looked good. This blindness thing feels like another way to shame people who wear makeup. :/

Most of us have "blindness" when something is really trending, and that's totally fine. I'm 57, and remember that blush was huge during the 80's. I loved a lilac-pink Chanel blush and I was far from lighthanded with it. My hair was huge and I wasn't lighthanded with hair spray either. So what. I love looking at old pictures from that time. Women are always being shamed for something. This is makeup. It washes off. I hope women will just continue blushing hard for as long as they want to.

I know for me, some of the blush trendiness and what I buy has been about being solidly middle aged and realizing that adding more blush = a more youthful look and it really can bring a level of color back to the face unlike anything else, and any sense of too-muchness to my own eyes is usually on the younger ones that don’t “need” to push the envelope on blush (but of course makeup as expression and fun is always more important than the concept of anyone actually “needing” blush, but we olds have decades of magazines telling us what was “right” and it’s hard to re-wire that, even as it serves us less to cling to all that bogus ageism and old style never-perfect-enough vibe!) 🙃

I think blush tends to be the shoes of make-up, meaning painting your cheeks is more fun and less complicated (like buying shoes as opposed to clothing) than finding a base, mascara, or eye shadow. Your cheeks are always your cheeks and it’s just easier to play around and even change your mood by using blush of sorts.

I have naturally red cheeks and I have been accused of blushing my whole life. I'm stoked that I can just put on a light to medium coverage foundation and be on trend because for 20 years I've had to do full coverage foundation with green primer every day to completely undo my natural pinky redness. And last year I was still wiping out all my redness and adding blush and then one day the light bulb flashed and I realized I didn't actually need to blank out my face just to add pink back 😂.

I think it's totally true, look at 80s make up and wedding gowns. Current trends shape the perception of our taste. In 10 years we will look back and think we look funny but I've never looked back at a bare face picture and thought I looked funny, only makeup or clothing

Loved hearing your reflections on this ! I agree, trends are trends for a reason. What they wore in the 80s was THEE look then, then it toned down in the 90s, ramped up a little in the early 2000s and then toned down a little again….the pendulum swing, like you said. I think it’s so fun to look back, too, and remember the different trends and reminisce on it. The digital footprint definitely makes a huge difference…everyone’s so afraid to “look bad” or to not always look on trend or cool or be made fun of or whatever. Just live your life ! Have fun…10 years from now remember that fun when you’re looking back on those pictures. Life’s too short to try to stay acceptable to other people at all times …it’s impossible so why even try lol

Without judgment, I think the gap between the everyday makeup user and the makeup influencer/close follower is growing. The everyday user doesn’t have blush blindness. We notice when we’ve accidentally overdone it, and we can usually tell whether someone else has overdone it on purpose or by accident. 😂 I can definitely see, however, how the joy of using a product or a new technique can completely blind you to how much you’re using - in my 20s, it was bronzer and concealer. It’s always something, and there’s nothing necessarily wrong with it, but it does draw attention.

It's sad that they find a way to bash women having fun. I watched the beauty community back when it first started till now and I wasn't able to be involved as things were so expensive and out of reach for me at the time and now that I been having fun with make up and able to enjoy better products everyone seems to say we are "doing it wrong" or we aren't in trend. Like I just was able to buy more expensive eyeshadow pallets granted still on sale but now people say eyeshadow is out of trend but I'm still having fun learning and playing with it and blush I love to play with and now they bash that.
