I had problems with the monitor I have been using for 5 years. It cost a lot of money but a replacement could cost so much more! So... I fixed it by replacing the fan and other power supply.

If it’s your Thunderbolt cable that’s bad, save a bunch of hassle and just get the Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable (male to male) from Amazon and plug into the Thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor. Saw this in another video and just did it and it works perfectly, without having to take anything apart.

Thank you for this great video! It is really encouraging because I'm currently experiencing the same problem where my thunderbolt display gets hot at the back and the fan is making a noticeable noise which wasn't there before.. I really love this display and would like to keep it for at least a couple more years. I can take it for servicing but after I've watched this video as well as I read the detailed instructions available on iFixit I realized that I would rather try and do the repair myself like you did. My question is if replacing the power supply and fan actually solved your problem and the unit runs quieter now and the operating temperature was reduced? Also something that concerns me a bit is that like you've mentioned, the power supply is made by a third party manufacturer and is not the original OEM unit that came with the display from the factory... Did you notice any issues with it since the installation or it works like a charm? Thanks so much again!

Good job! I bought a broken Cinema Display 27 that is dim and sometimes will not turn on. 24V and 12V are good so that rules out power supple. It has to be either screen or logic board. Picture will not display with display port cable insert but will display if the power plug is removed and re-inserted. I'm leaning towards logic board.

I think I got my CD27 sorted out. The signal input routes through the panel and then connects to the logic board via a second cable connector. There are three total connectors, two on the panel and one to the logic board. I re-seated all of them. Panel now comes on with display port cable insert and the dimming is much better. On a side note, the dust bunnies inside don't help. The fan was caked in crud.

I love this idea, however, these days folks are selling their 27" Cinema Display screens for about $250.00 via Letgo or FB Marketplace. Parts used in this video from the Mac Part Depot came out to be approximately $210.00 before taxes... just a thought to consider.

Great points all around. Thanks for sharing. My hope was to get another 5 years out of the monitor and $200+ seemed like a reasonable chance to take compared to buying something new... but again, good points about the repair cost versus selling price. Thanks for commenting!

Sure. I bought two parts from Mac Parts Depot: Part 1: 661-6048 Thunderbolt Display 27 MC914LL A1407, Power Supply 250W 614-0508 NB-2738W SKU: 661-6048 Part 2: 922-9936 Thunderbolt Display Fan, 27 MC914LL A1407 NB-2566W SKU: 922-9936 Please note: They shipped me the wrong part... but, they fixed their error. It just took more time. Good luck with your repair.

@@AllThingsKZbin Thanks so very much, i took a screen shot of all the part numbers. Update: Monitor came back on. I'm using a 2018 MBP 15" (Type C USB) which I had to plug into the wall, plug the DV cable (from monitor with adapter) and plug-in mag-safe charger (from monitor with adapter). It stays on most of the day. Today went out once, restarted and came back on. Must be an issue with how much power the Type C USB ports are delivering?

Hi great video, I have two 27" Apple LED Cinema screens and both are showing a bit of blurrness, if you have them turned off you can see what looks like fog in the middle of the screens, Would that be maybe moisture? If so, would i just follow your video and remove the outter screen and dry it out some how ? Cheers :)
@AwesomeFunThings2 жыл бұрын
Removing the outer screen is a good (and safe) first step. I suggest you unplug the monitor and try it. Good luck!

Where did you find the parts? I need to do the same thing to mine.
@AwesomeFunThings4 жыл бұрын
I got the parts from Mac Parts Depot. Warning: the shipping process was not smooth. They sent me a $1 power cable rather than the $150 power supply. Of course they took my full payment from my right away. I called them and they said: "Oh sorry, that was our mistake" and promised to mail me the power-supply they confirmed they had in stock within 2 days. 3 weeks later it arrived. It seemed like a scammy way to get my cash in their accounting system quickly without doing all the work. Still... the parts did arrive and the parts did work so I'm happy about that. I also don't think many people sell this part because the monitor is 5+ years old and that amount of time is considered "forever" in "tech years." So... use Mac Parts Depot with this in mind. Good luck with your upgrade. Just go slow and stay organized with the install and you'll be fine.

Hi, great video. How do I know if the problem is the PSU and not the LCD? Mine stopped working, but the magsafe powers the computer. I bought a .5m tb cable and it's still NOT WORKING. Please help.

Hey Matt, reached out to you a couple of months ago and you graciously helped me out with some part numbers & prices. It turns out my issue with my display stemmed from a faulty cable! Inexpensive fix - check out the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4qZgpePo6ygq6M - hope it helps some of your viewers as well.
