Actually you are wrong when you say that PC manufacturers don't release yearly updates to their computers. They release multiple updates yearly. However the updates are small, like faster processor, faster RAM, etc. They just don't update the chassis hence the updated components doesn't mean it's a new model. On PCs you get always the newest tech almost immediately. Also PC manufactures drop their prices during a year as the tech gets cheaper. Apple keeps the same price several years

Okay let me blow your mind: Just like the halloween event was a giant ad for iPhone 15 Pro, this chip obsession is actually going in the direction of penetrating the game market, not making Macs better. It's misdirection. A slight of hand if you will. AAA Games are running natively on iPhone now, the world's largest gaming platform, technically. I think they are making a gaming console to rival the likes of PlayStation and XBox and will use the App Store to do it. Apple Arcade was step 1. Apple is going to make a screenless device smaller than the Mac Studio that runs the beefiest chip and is nicely cooled, and every game in existence will be portable to that platform, barring exclusives, MAYBE. But we have seen what they did with Rosetta. Just watch. Ray Tracing capabilities were unlocked this time. We are nearing that devices' announcement, mark my words.
@stanford19 Жыл бұрын
And to be clear, the small screenless device plugs into your tv, and you log in with your Apple ID. It will be subscription based, and continuity allows you to play your games on the iPhone on the go because of iCloud.

Mac Sales are down because Tim Cook spent a decade chasing off the pro-sumer end of Apple's business in pursuit of being a consumer oriented company and then hasn't offered consumers anything compelling relative to the PC market. Like how are you changing people over a grand for an iMac with a 24"inch screen in 2023...Even the offer towards the higher end users of a 27" display for $1600 is insulting. The lowest screen size for an iMac should be 27" the pro market should be 30"+ and then there is the nickel and diming on hard drive space and making it sodered/non-user upgradable. Charging for keyboards and mice on a $4k Mac Studio. Increasing Apple Care pricing by $100 - on and on. This is the apple of 2004 when they were a niche company that appealed to their niche fanatics.

I honestly feel like that’s what they’re going to start to do. Release the MacBook pros first and then the following year, release the iPads, Mac Studios, etc. the M4 won’t come until 2025. The proof is that they’re releasing the vision pro Q1 2024 likely with an M3 chip in it. I doubt they’re going to release a better chip later in 2024. I feel as if anything that Apple creates that can fit in your pocket will be on a yearly cycle and anything that can’t will be on a 2 year cycle moving forward.

Mac shipments have returned to pre-pandemic baseline. If you zoom out and do a Mac shipment curve over the last 10 years, the current numbers are in line with that growth curve. The huge growth in shipment numbers from 2020-2022, which was brought upon by the shift to work from home and the move to Apple Silicon, is an exception to the longer term trajectory.

This is spot on! When I was in college, I bought a Mac because I knew it would last my entire college career! The development cycle in a mature market like Mac (and even iPhone) can slow down. I have an M1 Max MBP, and it's great! Slowing down the development cycle for the Mac could benefit Apple. They save some money on annual iterations, it gives their supplier time to innovate, and our Macs don't become "last gen" so quickly. So, here is my "if I were Tim Cook" proposal for the Mac: a tick/tock cycle. In a "tick" year, the processors are updated. In a "tock" year, MacOS is updated. This gives a two year production cycle for both the chips and the OS. The chips would likely have better performance gains, and MacOS would have more time for new features and stability checks. They may not be able to get away with this for iPhone, but as a Mac owner, I would be happy with this arrangement!

This is a great assessment. My tricked out mid 2010 desktop worked very well until I couldn’t upgrade software anymore. I only got a MacBook pro with M1 because I enrolled in grad school 2 years ago. I do video editing so I needed a powerful machine. I don’t see a need anytime soon for anything faster. My 11pro still works great but I went and got the 15pro just because of the better cameras. That being said I think Cook should review Jobs’s approach: consider aesthetics. Jobs would create products that inspired imagination along with functionality with good business and marketing. Cook is mostly business and functionality. If we could get back to that blend from the Jobs era Apple would make the sales they want.

I have an intel mac pro and my next computer will be a PC. There was tremendous value in being able to dual boot and play games on windows, upgrade my hard drives and graphics card etc. Now you can't even replace a hard drive unless you want to spend $7k on a mac pro and even then there are caveats. Apple has always charged a premium but it used to represent tremendous value in a lot of ways as once you paid that higher price your experience was not tainted with what Apple is doing now - charging another $300 for a keyboard and track pad if you buy a $4k Mac Studio, charging almost $500 for insurance, requiring accessories for the Mac Studio to have front ports of a sufficient number and type, requiring dongles for an ipad to use a headphone jack - on and on. Throwing ads into the desktop music app (formerly itunes) for their subscription service instead of allowing me an ad free experience to access my own music was the last straw. There is literally very little left that isn't as annoying about Apple as there is about Windows - the only difference now is I'm being charged more for it.

Hey Jon 🍎, Regarding the matter at hand, it's evident that fewer people opt for Mac over Windows. While I agree that M1 Macs excel in tasks over the years, the price-to-performance ratio tilts significantly in favor of Windows machines, particularly in gaming. Although Apple is venturing into gaming, the lack of popular titles is a setback. Moreover, it's hard to overlook the fact that a $1500 machine comes equipped with just 8 gigs of RAM. The performance for 3D applications, compared to Windows, leaves much to be desired. At the end of the line, Macs have proven to be too costly for emerging markets, hindering their ability to establish a substantial presence.

You have your phone and can purchase a cheap tablet. Unless you’re running a business, your job supplies your computer. I actually haven’t bought a computer for years because of this.

When you said “Hey bro can I open the about part of your Mac and see what chip you have inside of there” I felt that because I’ve been checking on every Mac I’ve ever used just because 😭💯

I don’t think Apple is really looking to keep the high pace of sales right now. They’re just looking to have as many people in the ecosystem which equals $$. They’re not expecting M1 buyers to upgrade. They’re looking to entice PC users to switch. The better the Mac gets the better it looks in the eyes of the PC users. If they get on par with gaming PCs then things will start happening fast. So they keep upgrading as fast as possible, faster than anyone would need to upgrade, to get to that point as quickly as possible.

When I upgraded to an M1 MacBook Air three years ago that replaced a fully maxed out late 2010 Intel MacBook Air that I had used daily since then, it even had a 2-3 hour usable battery life on it's original battery. So now, with the M1 I'm set for the next decade. Though I made sure to go for 16 GB RAM and 1 Tb storage, for the sake of longevity, even tough it's not needed now, it may be useful 3-5 years from now.

Yeah the price could be cheaper that could help move the needle. But realistically like jern said the general public doesn’t need all of this performance yoy so that’s why the m1 reigns so strong as the first non intel based to boot.

hear me out... Vision pro is the answer. by the time it gets better, no one will really need a Mac, it does what a Mac can do and better... a Pro Display is already practically useless because you can connect your Mac to a vision pro and have infinite screen real estate. and from what I've heard, FCP will be on Vision pro from day one. only time will tell.

If they wanted a sales spike perhaps offering a lot more memory at the base price or promoting free AI models that run locally on units with large amounts of memory... that's all I have. Beyond that they made the perfect (M)onster.

the endgame is to sell a all-in-one apple subscription that, if you have the highest tier, you can change iPhone / watch / Mac / etc each year.

Numbers being down aren’t a sign of anything other than the numbers being down. They have a great product, they are always improving. If sales were down because people were jumping to a competitor… then you have a story.

yeah, M1 was too good basically. I’ve had my base M1 MBA for 2.5 years and it still works like on day 1. Planning to hold on to it for at least 5-6 years

I think they would say the long term answer is the vision pro. That is where they really need the gains, and when people will start to adopt, they will have crazy growth again, assuming people will adopt

Honestly personally I think most of the downturn is reversion to the pre-pandemic/M1 trajectory. A lot of people moved up purchases, or moved into the Mac ecosystem for the first time, but now they will be moving back to a more normal upgrade cycle. Yes, their numbers have dropped since the huge 2020-2022 bubble, but they are still well above their pre-2020 numbers.

That's why Apple is getting into gaming. Games are demanding in CPU and GPU, and it's something casual users do, unlike very heavy video editing, 3D rendering, science research, etc. These need to upgrade more often but these are niche use cases.

Apple has bigger problem with M3 a lot of tech reviewers are saying the performance boost of the M3 isn't noticeable if already have a M1 or M2. I was planning on getting a M3 because the screen and speakers on my MBA M2 weren't cutting it for my old eyes and sound was only okay. So after so many reviewers saying speed boost isn't that noticeable I ended up buying a refurbished Macbook Pro with a M1 Max. The screen is beautiful and the speakers are best I've heard on a laptop. The best part is I saved thousands and got a better config of RAM and storage than I would of got with a new M3.

I feel like you could say the same about Toyota. Their cars are SO good that people keep them longer than average. It’s why Apple and Toyota feel like they can just charge more

If they lowered their prices on the Macbooks, I'm sure more people would buy them. $2000.00 minimum for an apple laptop is no laughing matter, especially for college students.

The thing to keep in mind is that while Apple may want to delay release of future chips, the competition is sprinting behind them. They have to outpace Qualcomm-Nuvia as they prepare to release the first generation of their ARM SoCs for Windows systems and fight them on performance per watt. I don’t think the transition and adoption will go as smoothly for Microsoft because the hardware and OS are so fragmented, but they’ll eventually get through it. Thank goodness for competition. Apple has to keep innovating and stay on their toes.
