I'm an amateur to video but believe me, i really tried my level best to find a difference between prores and H265 but even at 400% the difference is so small its basically nonexistent. This is so liberating for me because now I can shoot and record internally to my phone and not need to worry about dangling SSDs or running out of space. Thanks for the short and sweet video

I use a few cameras that shoot h.265 10-bit and I've always found it really flexible in post & no issues falling apart so the idea of using h.265 on the BMD app vs native really excited me (enough to want to switch back to iPhone after a decade away) as a really convenient option. I have no issue using external devices/storing large files but things are just so much simpler with smaller files vs massive ProRes files. It means workflows like AirDropping to Mac for editing quickly is feasible again too. Thanks for the detailed comparison. I was expecting much more of a tradeoff given the filesize difference. Surprising exactly how good it is

I used to think using smartphones was only if you had nothing else, but now I think its now a viable tool as a quick camera to use if the principle one is already deployed or just snapping a quick b-roll shot! You're most welcome. It is surprising how small the file size is and how well is working so far. Hopefully they introduce a constant bitrate in their next update. Maybe 40-50 Mbit/s at the low end?

A quick shot on the 3x/.5x is going to be a lot quicker than switching lens! Given how good BMD are at updates and asking features I wouldn't be surprised. No problem! Assuming you are primarily using h.265 for the spontaneous filming. 128gb at the lower end is more than enough to grab some shots as a b-cam. However if this is also your personal phone then I would see how much storage you currently use and buy the next storage tier up. If you're planning to only film in Prores, go up two tiers case them file sizes get big!

Thanks for this video. It's very helpful. I noticed that BMCApp only has a Log HDR option for color space and not a Log SDR. Whereas in the native app through the setting you can choose SDR Log over HDR Log. This is important if you don't want to get the Apple HDR Look and have an SDR image to work with. Have you found any workarounds for that? I don't like the Apple HDR and want a more natural skin tone of the SDR image from a regular camera... Please let me know your thoughts.

I'm not entirely sure why in v1.1 they took it away and only now have Apple Log - HDR Rec2020. I will add this request in my most recent video that we'd like to have the Apple LOG - SDR option back. I too prefer it over the rec2020 as the Blackmagic Rec2020 does not behave in davinci resolve like the one straight from the iphone camera app.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Apple Log, that color profile, is defined as having Rec.2020 Color Space, they only changed the label, there is no SDR Log in the native app or in BM Camera. Its all in the whitepaper (all of the definitions of what Apple Log is are from Apple, BM Camera is just implementing what the iPhone's API's expose). In native app, you can choose between SDR, HDR and Log, same as BMC (they just updated the label). Specifically, you don't get the "apple HDR" look when using Log, that is the point of using Log is that you are going to do the processing of the image, so you can define how you are doing tone mapping and gamut mapping, etc.

TLDR there is no such thing as Apple Log - SDR (technically there is no such thing as Apple Log - HDR either, but that is how Apple Log is labeled in the BM Camera App). There is only Apple Log color profile, which is a combination of a color gamut (Rec2020) and a transfer function (Apple Log transfer function)

Go to your iphone App store, click on your picture on the top right and look for the apps you need to update. Unless you have Autoupdate turned on, then you don't have to do anything.

@@Bluemanta69 You're the second person I've heard this happen to. I'm not sure what could be happening as my Davinci resolve read the files without a problem. Assuming you've already tried uninstall and install of the Blackmagic Camera App and that your davinci resolve is at least 18.5 or above. The only thing I can think of is I'm on an Apple computer. Are you on a windows? I wonder there is something odd about how windows is seeing the HEVC files.

The only difference between h265 and h264 is file size. Older computers can handle h264 better and really struggle editing h265 simply because the files are so compressed and require a powerful processor to work on them.

Apple LOG in H.265 is more than enough for film projection on a cinema screen. My film and other indie films I worked on were all shot in 8bit h.265 non-log 4k and they all held up just fine in theatre DCP. The only time you would want to film in prores is if you plan to keep re-exporting out between departments like the editor, colorist, VFX until you reach the final render. Thats when Prores Makes sense. If you're just taking the h.265, doing some coloring, and everything is working off of that original file into one final export. Prores in my opinion is not really needed.

Based on my testings it did not seem to be real 4444, so recording in the codec was not achieving any benefits. Maybe it could come back in a later version if they do figure out a way to record true 4444. But for now it was just a large file with no real benefit over 422 HQ"

Thanks for this video! I have been using HEVC+AppleLog but still resorted to ProRes for some events to keep the 10-bit information. Do HEVC+AppleLog retain 10-bit information, or is it 8-bit? On the same note, I do agree, I hope that BlackMagic will introduce a constant bitrate!

Between my Quicktime and Davinci Resolve video inspector. All the metadata says the Apple LOG HEVC is 10bit encoded. From the way it's grading it also feels like 10bit to me. The only mention about Apple LOG being 8bit that I could find was here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX3ai4Z9aLlmrpofeature=shared&t=1120 I'm not entirely sure how they figured out its a 8-bit color space wrapped in a 10bit prores. But they were also using the in-camera app and not Blackmagic Camera. Not entirely sure if there is a difference there in how Apple's camera app is coding everything. Hope this helps!

I used FFMPEG like this: ffmpeg -i filename.mp4 and I looked for: Stream #0:0[0x1](und): Video: hevc (Main) (hvc1 / 0x31637668), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 3840x2160, 54092 kb/s, 50 fps, 50 tbr, 600 tbn (default) In this example, it yields information as being HEVC 8-bit (yuv420p) with 54Mbps bitrate.

Hi :) Hope all's well. Thanks so much for this very useful video! Just what I'm exploring and was wondering about. I have a 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max I'm working at selling as I just bought a 512GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. When I set the Blackmagic Camera app to ProRes 422 HQ it says I have 60 min. of video to shoot for my storage. Not much really. I guess now with my iPhone 14 Pro Max it doesn't seem like I can shoot in Apple Log even in the Blackmagic Camera app. I guess this limits the dynamic range, etc. What option might work best as far as color grading and overall quality of the video? I guess I can still shoot h.265 but not in log. I have an 2TB M1 Mac Mini and FCP and DaVinci Resolve. I guess the h.265 requires a lot more work to color grade it, but just watched a video of editing it in DaVinci on an M1 Mac and it worked okay. Eventually I'll upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Fairly new to all this. :) Thanks much for your help! Subscribed. :)

Apple LOG at this time is a feature of the iPhone 15 pro/max. Not sure if it'll ever be released to the iphone 13 or 14 via iOS updates? Not having Apple LOG actually doesn't limit your dynamic range all that much. When filming in any of the other three color profiles you can achieve 13 stops of dynamic range based on my tests with my color board. Rec709 and P3 to me has the best colors. The Blackmagic HDR is very different from Apples on HDR and requires a bit of work to get the colors to be natural to start with. I have a M1 Macbook Air 16gb and have no problems editing all the footage you saw in this video (FCPX or Davinci) I used to have a 8gb model but in some cases it was struggling with more complicated edits. If you have 16gb, you're good to go! Hope all is helps! Thanks for subbing!

If I need to occasionally shoot one I can. Eventually it will be nice to have the USB-C port. 24p with 1/50th shutter speed will always give a more organic look that we are used to in films and TV series. 60p looks like sports games or soap opera's where the look is too clear and much TOO real (If that makes sense)

However, I've noticed that I can't read H265 10 bits 4:2:2 files in DaVinci Resolve, I think the extended color depth (4:2:2) for H265 10 bit files is only available in the Studio version (paid version) of the software. I use the studio version of Davinci. Though I feel when I had the free version I was able to use 10bit 422. I have heard from another user that was having trouble reading the h.265 files on his Windows computer running Davinci. Are you on windows too?

What frames and shutter speed did you record on? I have an iPhone 14 Pro, and I'm using the Beastcam app; the app allows me to record ProRes 422 HQ up to 4K@60fps. I didn't use Blackmagic cam because it maxes out at 4K@30 422 HQ.

I am using the blackmagic cam and there is no limitation of 4k@30. It is allowing me to record at 4k@60, Prores 422 HQ. Though my phone is Iphone 15 pro and has 96gb of memory left. I would say clear out some memory on your phone and see whether you can select the 4k@60, if you ever want to try it out.

I was primarily recording 24p except for the 60p tests. I believe the iPhone14 pro is technically capped (by apple) at 4k30p prores. I think the iPhone 15pro is the first apple phone to technically let you do 4k60p prores externally (available internally by Blackmagic) Not entirely sure what Beastcam is doing in their app to give you a 4k60p prores. Maybe its just a h.265 wrapped in a prores file at 60p? This is my best guess why you are not seeing 4k60p 422HQ on your iphone 14 pro

You most likely won't see much difference in detail and noise between h.264 vs h.265. You will probably just end up with a slightly larger file size with h.264. However if you have an older computer that doesn't handle editing h.265 HEVC well. Then you will want to film in h.264.

I think with windows you need to make sure you have the quicktime codec installed so that your computer can play it. I'm on a mac now, but I think back in the day you can just download the codec from Apple or just by downloading the Quicktime Player?

its relatively small compared to the other codecs given! Filmed a 35-second footage 4k 30FPS with H.265 and it only took around 158Mb while if I flmed it using prores 422/HQ, it would be a staggering 3Gb+ size

Thanks for helping out in the comments James! The files sizes for h.265 are quite small. A completely empty 256gb iphone should hold a good few hours of footage. So it really depends on how you use your phone. Specifically text messages where you may be sending videos clips, gifs, memes, etc etc. That stuff will take up space. Especially if you have a everlasting archive of all your texts from years past. In which case I would say a 512gb is a good happy medium (thats the one I got) I can definitely get by with a 256, but I plan to keep this phone for awhile as well as use it as my entertainment while I'm traveling. So i'll be loading movies onto it.

So glad you this video brought you some value! As for h.265 vs Prores Proxy. I think the Proxy will probably do better with the color stripes, but because of its lower bitrate at an uncompressed codec, details could be a little blurry compared to the higher Prores Codec. I personally have not shot much with the Proxy except for some test shots and basic color grade, in which case the proxy held up pretty well just like the h.265. Prores really only become a handy tool when you have the hand it off to multiple departments after many editing passes. For content creators, h.265 has done quite well compared to h.264.

Thanks for the very useful video! Just curious - how did you transfer the files from the BM app to the computer? Was it via the iOS Files app using an external storage device? I've found that if I select the 'Save Video' option in the BM app it will save the footage to the iOS Photos app as H.264 (lame!). This way though the footage is readily accessible simply by connecting the phone to the computer, whereas anything stored in the Files app does not show up as far as I can tell. As for H.265 vs ProRes 422 HQ quality, the difference becomes more noticeable the more you push Color Boost and Saturation in Resolve: H.265 shows clear banding while ProRes remains relatively smooth. Obviously that's just for the sake of testing, for most general use cases H.265 is a good compromise.

Yes, I used my Samsung T7 SSD and copied the files from the iOS Files app into the SSD. You are correct, anything in the Files App does not show up when plugged into the computer... which is one of those random things that irritates me about Apple sometimes. It makes no sense. I think it probably has something to do with them not wanting the iphone to become an external storage unit itself. So they make it impossible for it to act as such. Yup yup! H.265 is more than acceptable for most content creator applications. Productions where the iPhone is the only tool handy to grab shots will def want to use ProRes :)

Hi, I have a question. How can import Apple Log h.265 files in Davinci? I have a sound but, no video itself in the timeline. And I have the appropriate codec for h.265, but it still doesn't seem to work with Apple Log?

I'm assuming you're on a windows computer? I have hard from some people that windows is being very odd with Apple LOG Footage from iPhone. I unfortunately do not have the answer as I'm on a Mac. So sorry.

Whoa, I hadn't even considered Log h.265. This isn't using the burn in LUT function in black magic camera is it? Instead just saving a log video in h.265 and then adding the LUT later?

I've been doing H.265 log into adding LUT and other color grading later on the computer, and I struggle to find a difference when I do exactly the same thing with ProRes 422. So yeah I guess we aren't talking about the burn-in LUT feature here.

Sounds great. I've been wanting to try out log and colour grading but the massive ProRes files make things difficult. Saving Apple log as h.265, then grading on a computer seems like a great solution for non-professional/personal videos.

Interesting take on things… seems like the biggest reason to shoot in 422 has to do with scenes where color banding could be an issue.

Yea, thats probably the time to bust out the 422. I will say in general filming I don't see any banding even if it may technically be there, the stepping is quiet small. But I guess at the end of the day youtube compression can make the banding more noticeable.

A iPhone 15 Pro with only 128gb or storage will have plenty of storage for the h.265 file size.

If you get the 15 pro then I’d just record ProRes directly to external ssd giving you the best quality. Unless file size is an issue.

Hey Hey Awesome guy! Sorry I'm a bit late to this one. I picked up the 15 Pro Max on launch date, but because we are in the height of haunt season (I have a haunt channel too), I haven't been able to really experiment yet. I have been on the struggle bus a bit as I first tried recording to a 1 TB SSD with proRes LOG only to have the FPS start fine, but drop to around 7 FPS for the rest of the clip, which isn't usable! I started using an external card reader with it, but it doesn't seem to work with my gimbal. I have never liked recording to the iphone storage because it's kind of a messy process to get the files off, so external recording was a big selling point for me. I assumed I should shoot in ProRes since I want the best image I can get. How does ProRes look compared to H.265 in very low light? I shoot in theme parks and haunted attractions when it's barely enough light to see. Thanks!

Ya know someone did mention that his video inspector said the files coming from his Blackmagic App recordings were "Variable". Mine does not say variable, just straight 24fps. I wonder if it has anything to do with me recording it mostly internally vs externally? As for how Prores will look compared to h.265 in low light from the blackmagic app. The prores will be noisier because the grain detail will all be there. H.265 will probably be more muddy grain. Thats my best guess what the differences will be.

_I prefer fortwotoHQ when recording and dimly lit low light areas to capture better details at night and or lowly dim lit areas within a room it gets even better with HDR_

I filmed in h265 + apple log HDR on the iPhone 15 pro but when I try to import it to Davinci it only shows audio, the video is missing. I have the Hevc extension installed on my Windows 11. Can you help me?

I remember last year a lot of people on the Windows side were having trouble getting the BMCAPP h.265 videos to read. I unfortunately am not sure what others have found to be the solution as I'm on a Apple computer.

Wow looks abvious for me H265. Thanx. But strange enough the editing on capcut does not work With AppleLog H.265. I get a green line in the middle of the screen. Apple log H.264 and ProRes 422HQ does work.

That is strange the h.265 does not work... I wonder if capcut just needs a firmware update to understand the codec better? I know some people on windows machines seems to have problems with Apple LOG h.265 coming from the BMCAPP while my Mac does not.

It records in 10bit automatically. There are some conflicting reports that its not true 10bit. But from my own observations it certainly does not behave lower than 10bit color.

I'm not sure if thats what he was asking, but yes the iPhone 14 does not have Apple LOG. This is a feature only on iphone 15 pro at the moment. If you're wondering about Prores4444 that was on BMCapp v1. That was removed because it was never true Prores4444.

You may need to double check this in forums, but I do have comments on my other videos that the regular iPhone 13 has access to Prores through the BMCapp. So in theory a regular iPhone 15 will have it too, just no Apple LOG. Apple LOG is exclusive to the Pro Lineup.

Im trying to figure out why videos are not playing on my PC when i import them from the Blackmagic app on my iphone 15. Videos play when I import from the original iphone camera app but not blackmagic.

Unfortunately I'm on a Mac. I have heard from a couple others in the comments that they seem to have problems playing the files on their PC. I have yet to hear if any of them have solve the issue though.

I used to be able to record 444XQ on my iPhone 13 but I can’t anymore after update 1.1 Anyone has experienced this? Are they reserving the 444XQ format for a larger phone?

Prores 4444 was removed in update 1.1. Based on my testings it did not seem to be real 4444, so recording in the codec was not achieving any benefits. Maybe it could come back in a later version if they do figure out a way to record true 4444. But for now it was just a large file with no real benefit over 422 HQ

100% ProRes really is just for larger productions where the footage goes through multiple exports and reiterations (also in ProRes). Regular content creation that only goes through one final export, h.265 all the way!

I don't understand why this person uploaded a comparison video knowing KZbin compresses the video so much that seeing the actual differences is impossible unless he zoomed into the shot and showed the zoomed in sample in a thumbnail with a small description of settings used for comparison. Very unusual for a professional filmmaker.

VideoLUT app for iOS can color grade and much more. It’s has every LUT you can think of with very fine tuning and you can even export ProRes to HEIV at up to 100Mb/s bite-rate, 8 or 10-Bit, vise-versa (HEIV to ProRes). I mean really, iPhone is a cinema camera and video editor in one. Ok, carry on and go make a movie.

The iPhone really is. Shot a short film with it in Apple LOG and it performed beautifully. One thing I hope for with the BMapp is that they add some sort of subject tracking AF for certain situations.

I have a Panasonic camera and I shoot both ProRes and H.265. To be honest I can't really tell the difference, unless I go pixel peeping like you did. And then I would have to look really hard. However I much prefer editing and grading ProRes on my Windows computer using Davinci Resolve software simply because its less painful on my computer when editing. My computer can edit h.265 on a 4k timeline but why make it suffer when I don't have to? The majority of stuff I shoot is in h.265 and occasional projects are filmed with my Ninja V and ProRes. But for a hobbyist like myself who just publishes to KZbin, the end result is the same and I like both. As a side note, since I learned about the correct use of Colour Management on Davinci Resolve, I no longer use Utility LUTs to convert my LOG footage but I still tinker with artistic LUTs from time to time.

At the end of the day ProRes is great for production work where the files is getting exported out to ProRes multiple times as it works its way to the final export. For the rest of us h.264 and HEVC is perfectly fine. My older computer definitely chugged with HEVC, but glad that all the newer macs have been handling them very well with hardware acceleration. I need to learn more on the color management front for Davinci. I haven't dived deep enough into yet. Specifically I want to understand the ACES workflow.

@@TLDR_filmmaker If you want to learn about Davinci then I highly recommend the channels by Darren Mostyn, Cullen Kelly, Team2Films and MrAlexTech. As with everything on KZbin there are many channels who pretend to know what they are talking about and there are those that give downright bad or stupid advice that confuses you. Darren and Cullen are professional colourists who are at the top of their game. Team2Films is an upcoming channel with professionals who give solid grading advice. And Alex is excellent for editing tips and advice that will save you hours if not days trying to work out yourself. As for workflow and Colour Management, I use the Davinci Wide Gammut colour management. Never used ACES but I know enough to know that it works in a much similar way with a wide colour space to play in. I really enjoy watching your channel.😀

@@flexflex5853 ProRes and h265 are two different codecs with two different purposes or intentions. One codec is intended to capture information with the least compression as possible. This includes capturing and recording every single frame. So if you shot 25fps then the capture codec would record 25fps. This creates high bitrates and massive files. The other Codec is intended primarily for delivery so that it can be viewed over the internet and be stored on small storage devices. It achieves this by compressing and throwing away information that it can get away with but still retain a reasonable viewing experience. If you filmed a subject at 25fps then the codec would normally only capture every fourth frame and use maths to fill in the missing frames. This creates considerably smaller file sizes with considerably smaller bit rates. When it comes to editing these two different codecs then two things happen. If you edit with ProRes and you make a cut in your footage the computer or editing software has every single frame which has as little compression as possible to use and requires very little computing power to perform that task. However with a highly compressed Codec like h265 your computer has to decompress that footage by calculating and filling in the missing frames just to look at it. And then, when you make a cut the computer or editing software has to recalculate and remember each missing frame every time. This takes considerable computing power to perform. And on older, more slower computers, this is the reason they are so laggy and the main reason for stuttering. ProRes was never intended for delivering to the client or KZbin. It was intended for editing and capturing detail. H265 was never intended for editing. It was intended for being consumed on iPads, phones and the internet. So, yes, ProRes is less laggy than h265 on Davinci. Many professionals convert h265 into ProRes just so that they can have an easier time when editing and more importantly colour grading in Resolve. They turn the h265 into high quality proxies which are ProRes so that they can edit and their computers work faster and better.
