Thank you 🙏 dear Julian for another great video. Your presentations are always very exciting and even a non-professional can follow them well. Especially me with almost 6 decades on my shoulders. I never thought twice about the iPhone so another lesson learnt. Keep up your fantastic work. Take care and a Servus from an otherwise very quiet long-time subscriber here in Bavaria

This is a very clear deep dive on a very confusing topic ! I’m a profesional videographer, and I just got myself an Iphone 15 Pro. I didn’t know it would be that confusing to get the best out of it… We would really need Blackmagic give us the option to personalize the available ISO, kind of like Cine EI from Sony. And to have Zebras defined per ISOS steps 🤔 Then this camera would be fully equiped for run and gun ☺️

Thanks for the video. I had similar observations. Btw, have you "secured" your recommended zebra settings with extra range? Because in my findings for 55-400 ISO (on main 1x camera) absolute clipping point is ~ 82%, and for 1600 ISO ~ 96,5%, so a little bit higher than yours. What I've also found - is when using Shutter closer to 360 degrees (i.e. 1/24 or 1/25 for 24 fps), DR and clipping point breaks drastically, independently from iso.

Interesting findings Julian and appreciate all your work and I have not heard this anywhere else. Personally I found from quick tests, the noise levels at 1600 iso far too high for my liking for daytime with nd filters that some insist on due to Geralds findings. Also interesting you mention ETTR when some are saying you need to expose to left for iPhone 15 pro/max. After fiddling too much with the iPhone I decided to return to my Sony A1 as it seems more fun.

I guess I will stick to recording in ProRes (I use the LT 'flavor' as it seems to have the best compromise between IQ and storage space) to an external SSD- so much easier to start editing with the footage already on an external drive anyway...

Same rules apply. For the sharpest results I would stick to ISO 55, 100 and 200 with ND. If it gets too dark, I would take the ND off before jumping to ISO 1600.

I prefer 1250, it’s also one of the easy to reach values. I didn’t see why you said that value was worse than 1600, isn’t it identical? It almost acts like a dual iso system, I try to use 1250 when possible, outdoors, 55. I prefer ProRes 422 LT, and avoiding conversion lut’s and using cst’s or color management also helps with banding and artifacts.

very good tests, but I will say the same I said on Geralds video about the DR. All this data is very compromised because on Iphones you cant turn off noise reduction at all, so most of this data and Geralds data is based on the noise levels, which makes no sense since you dont know how much chroma denoise or even spatial noise reduction has been applied (I believe by the "oil Painting" look iphone footage has that they use spatial noise reduction but who knows) there is no way to make sense of all this data without having no way to turn all that off. "I see X amount of noise on the video X or Y" is very very relative when you don't know how much noise reduction was applied, maybe there is less noise but faces pores are all gone because of the NR for example. Gerald Also based the DR on footage with "acceptable noise levels" using the very expensive DR chart, but this chart wont show him how much NR got applied and if he lost X amount of details because of NR. Resuming, in my opinion all those tests on Iphones are compromised and the data is contaminated. This could only make sense on android that can turn off sharpening, Noise reduction and even record RAW DNGs and show you the real deal.
